After a night in Orient Bay near Greenport NY, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) leaves the quiet anchorage at sunrise with a long day sail to Huntington NY. So this sailing trip takes us along the north shore of Long Island, from the north fork to Huntington. Once in Huntington we take a mooring buoy from Huntinton Yacht Club and spend few days there, hiding from the remnants of Hurricane Florence as it comes back offshore. There were several days of very heavy rain and strong winds, and we were grateful for the shelter in Huntington Harbor. We also have a guest, Glen’s son. On a less rainy day we take him on a train ride to New York City and explore the key sights of Manhattan. 17-26 September 2018

It's the week before we head out on our Atlantic Ocean crossing toward the Azores, and there are still a lot of preparations to do! Going halvsies on a rental car with our friends Bill and Grace of s/v Calico Skies, we hit up the biggest grocery stores St. Marten has to offer, both on the French side of the island. We load our carts with non perishables from Super U in the morning, and then make a run to Carefour at night to see if there is anything we missed. While we have a set of wheels at our disposal, Matt and I take a scenic drive around the island to explore a few beaches and foothills we hadn't been to before. We stop at the beautiful Orient Bay on the east side of the island to admire its beautiful waters while enjoying a cold beer. While there we see the remains of the Club Orient Resort, a complex of bungalows completely destroyed by Hurricane Irma. Our last few days on the island are finishing up our remaining boat projects and chores. After Jessica takes a tip to give the bottom one more cleaning, we try to clear out the mess of our aft quarter berth so the off watch person can sleep there during our crossing. Thank you so much, everyone, for bearing with us while we were trying to get the Technology Gods on our side 😅 The software I had downloaded to manage the Live session kept crashing when the time came to start the live stream, and we had to come with an alternative solution. French people follow an unwritten social rule called the "quart d'heure de politesse" (the politeness quarter), which allows anyone to show up late up to 15 minutes after the agreed time. I've never understood that rule and was actually quite embarrassed to show up late! Stress aside, Ryan and I discuss with your our transition from land-based to full-time cruisers, our sailboat and sailing equipment. Mostly, we wanted to hang out with the fantastic community that has built around this channel over the last 6 months, and answer as many questions as we could. After 20,000 nautical miles our sails are coming to the end of their lives. It's not that they have holes or tears in them. We’ve entitled this trip “To The Oceans.” It has allowed us to discover the problem of plastic in the oceans accompanied by Sam Potter, experience the awakening of ecological awareness with Simon Nessman and now, with Joana Schenker, we would like to wind up with an ode to nature, to our oceans. We travelled all the way with her through an evocative and poetic journey through the glaciers of Iceland, a wild place of unusual beauty that reminds us that our planet is alive…. A place where time seems to stop, where you can only hear the sound of Nature. Blue, green, black, immense skies, textures and shapes of this wonderful place unravel in front of your eyes as if they were there, just waiting for you. It was 17 years ago that Joana decided to make bodyboarding a priority in her life and she doesn’t regret it. The sea has taught her more than she expected. Joana is the a Bodyboard World Champion, and has previously earned four European championship titles, making her one of the most successful athletes of all times. Once there, she realized that the ocean had taught her much more than what she expected from it. The ocean is not silent, we need to listen. The ocean needs our help, protecting it, is to protect ourselves. All together we can do it! This was the third chapter of our “ To The Oceans” campaign for our Fall-Winter 2018 season, featuring impressive and inspiring characters and locations.
