From the 6th to the 15th february 2019, eight days have been dedicated at the beginning of the 15th stopover of Race for Water to IRD’s researchers in New Caledonia. They had to ensure the AMICi (Accumulation of Microplastics in the corals) mission, on board of the Race for Water vessel in the Prony bay. The AMICi mission is directed by Dr Claude Payri, director of the mixed unit of the ENTROPIE (Ecological Marine Tropical of the Pacific and Indian Oceans) of IRD in New-Caledonia and this mission is lead in collaborative partnership with IRD, ADEME, Caledonian Energy Agency and the south province. The Race for Water Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the water and the oceans in particular. Today, seriously under threat from plastic pollution, it is imperative that this essential resource for life is protected.To prevent plastic waste from reaching the waterways and oceans by developing social models and business models that give value to plastic waste and hence encourage its collection. Sailing in Greece is so much fun. The bareboat and charter operations take up a lot of room, but we like having people around and the mood is universally festive. For this portion, in the middle of a week of dead wind we actually find an afternoon of 20 knot winds for a great fun sail.

Crazy waves leaving Maupiti rocks Aquarius! The bad weather, and large waves continue during the 110 mile overnight crossing from Maupiti to Maupiha'a… This is one of the toughest crossings we have ever made!!! For a few hours after arriving the Maupiha'a shoreline, we zig zag around wondering if the pass safe to enter. Looking at 35Kts of wind, and a known current of 4kts to 6kts in the pass, we seriously debate not entering Maupiha'a, and continuing onto Palmerston. But, we had a few deliveries to make in Maupiha'a. It wasn’t easy, but we made it. And man was it was worth it!! With no expectations at the time of our arrival, we found Maupiha'a was an Island paradise. Just watch and see!! We made friends with the locals, and some of the cruisers... We were also invited to a few feasts of lobster, and coconut crab. MM MM Good! It was a beautiful day when we had to leave Maupiha'a, and Zivile was on the bow with the camera to show how narrow the pass.... And just when we are out of the pass a whale breaches 4 meter in front of Aquarius! That was so close and so scary! OMG - YOU HAVE TO SEE IT!! Something a little different this week, a modern plastic classic that will be of special interest to all sailors. The Kraken 50 is a new British classic with a Zero keel. After failing to find a safe round- the-world cruising yacht for his family adventure, sailing entrepreneur Dick Beaumont launched his own company and built what he says is the safest blue-water yacht in the world, his Kraken 50. Nous partons aujourd'hui à la découverte de la retenue collinaire de Combani avec Samion, en stage au GEPOMAY, le Groupe d'Etudes et de Protection des Oiseaux de MAyotte. La retenue collinaire de Combani est une des deux lacs artificiels de Mayotte. Cette retenue alimente en eau potable toute la moitié sud de l'île. Elle abrite aujourd'hui une population d'oiseau importante : des hérons garde-bœufs, des crabiers blancs, des aigrettes et encore beaucoup d'autres échassiers. Pour nous, ce jour là, nous n'avons pas eu de chance. Les oiseaux n'étaient pas de la partie, il faut dire que nous sommes arrivés un peu tard. Mais ce n'est pas grave, la promenade était très agréable et nous avons découvert plein de chose, manger des baies sauvages, vu un petit hérisson... This week we leave the comfort of Kos Marina and sail to Astypalea the most western of the Dodecanese Islands. We choose Astypalea due to it having an excellent anchorage, while we wait for some bad weather to pass. Vathi is an extremely quiet anchorage and it keeps us protected before we begin our journey across the Cyclade Islands. The first Island of the Cyclade Islands we visit is the beautiful Anafi. It's huge cliffs and untouched beauty leaves us breathless as we anchor below the town. We experience an unforgettable sunset and continue to enjoy the spectacular scenery the Greek Islands have to offer. We enjoy both our sails between Kos and Astypalea and Astypalea and Anafi. Both days the winds blow between 15-20 knots with some strong seas at times. Next week we continue our sail across the cyclades as we visit Santorini and Ios we hope you can join us. J/24 champion sailor Travis Odenbach is transitioning into the J/70 class with solid results. Odenbach's Team Honeybadger wins six of nine races to stamp his place at the 2019 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta St. Petersburg. He'll also be stamping his passport in the BVIs as the St. Pete Caribbean Challenger.

Die Holz-Klassiker bei der Voile de St. Tropez...

The famous diver Jacques Costeau loved the reef on the west coast of Guadeloupe with the little Pigeon island, he recommended it be made a marine reserve as early as 1974. We sailed there to find out what all the fuss was about and enjoyed a great snorkel and dive. We also had some drama when our good friends lost their rudders (not something any yachtie want to happen)! The cute little town of Deshaies at the top of Guadeloupe was a real delight, and we had a great sail from here to the aqua blue waters of Antigua - stay tuned for some more adventures here next episode - thank you Guadeloupe you were beautiful! We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures!
