One of the things we love about cruising is having TIME! Time to relax, explore, and spend on ridiculous ideas. Anchored inside the amazing Tobago Cays marine park we decide to lift the hook and head outside the reef, to the island of Petit Tobac, where it just so happens that one of the best Pirates of the Caribbean movies was filmed. A simple idea becomes a full on mission and we find ourselves digging a hole to bury a pirates booty of Delos moonshine and some other treasures we pull out of the bilge. A few social media clue posts later and he have ourselves a full on treasure hunt on our hands! After burying our moonshine treasure we return back to Delos so that Brian can begin Phase II of our eco-friendly antifouling paint, which is the installation of our Ultrasonic Antifouling system from Sonihull. We do a quick explanation of how the system works and go over the very basic installation steps. At the same time Brady and Blue are off on a mission to drink beer underwater. Yep, they strap weights to their ankles and attempt to walk on the bottom while drinking beer. It’s a little behind the scenes glimpse into how we film a buy-us-a-beer segment. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Living on the hard is by far the least pleasant part of living on a boat. It’s like doing a mini-remodel of your tini-house, which hopefully is only necessary every 2 years. One also needs to remember that you have to repair/upgrade/or service all the systems.... WaterMaker, Engine, GenSet, BowThruster, Bilge Pumps, water pumps, water heater, aircons, refrigerators, etc, plus all the cosmetics. Check all the through holes, and do a basic run-through the entire boat. It is not easy, even if some of the work is done by the professionals. For us it’s a 3rd time out Aquarius hit the hard: fist was in Trinidad after acquiring and owning Aquarius for 6 months; then “unscheduled” one in Panama after a working boat ran into us, and this one was just too good to resist – New Zealand is known world wide for their boat works at competitive prices, especially if you compare them with remote places like Tahiti. Let's not forget - in New Zealand we have a car, which makes this process easier plus everyone speaks english! Which makes so much easier to explain what you want to get done on your boat :) We also wanted to take few weeks away and visit home as well few weeks to drive around New Zealand. In this case, this is the safest and cheapest way to leave Aquarius on it’s own… We hauled out at Port Whangarei Marine Center, and filmed one day on the hard – just a regular day running many errands and doing boring stuff – just to prove that sailing is not only sunshine and turquoise waters… But much of the time it is Sunshine and Rainbows! :) Fair winds crew! In the previous chapters of OCEAN FOR LIFE: The Mumbai Diaries by North Sails, we have seen how poor waste management allows plastic waste to end up in the ocean during the rainy season or via rivers. What happens to this plastic waste next? The answer is obvious when travelling along the Mumbai coast. When prevailing winds from the west arrive with the rain during the monsoon season, the whole coast is an utter mess, as the tide brings all the rubbish, which has previously been dumped into the sea, back onto the shore. 'What we give, eventually we get back' is sadly completely true here. Local fishermen will explain to Gotzon how this area is characterized by intense tidal changes. 15 years ago, the tide would leave behind incredibly large amounts of fish and jellyfish on the ground. Now, it brings bags, bottles and plastic wrapping. In this chapter, we will learn how surprising it is to see the fishing community coexist with plastic in a natural way, despite the health issues that its accumulation inevitably generates in the area, where abounding micro-plastics also float imperceptibly on the river-banks. Meanwhile, oceanic plastic pollution is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. Following the coast of Mumbai, Gotzon will arrive at Chowpatty beach, one of the main beaches in Mumbai and a tragic mirror to the reality of our planet.
