Maverick 440 Skylarks before the Annapolis Sailboat show Oct 2019. This yacht was launched in June 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa and was sailed on her own bottom by the owners across the Atlantic to Grenada and then through the Caribbean to Miami and on the outside to Annapolis. This is about 7’000 nautical miles since launch. Most Maverick catamarans have an ICW friendly yacht making it the best boat for the East Coast of USA, to go up & down the Intercoastal Waterway with just on 63.5 AIR DRAFT from the waterline and also only just more than 3ft of draft with the ability to dry out. The Lagoon 40 has just arrived in Sydney for the summer. QLD manager Rowan tells the delivery story and how impressed he was with the Lagoons performance. Fire up the sails... In the early hours of late October a southerly stung the spring air as the three crew members started their voyage. It was 4:30am on Tuesday the 28th and although the wind wasn’t yet in their favour they had a keen eye on the conditions and had faith it would turn their way. As navy turned to blue the boys set the headsail rounding tweed heads to get apparent speed. It wasn’t until Cape Byron, around lunchtime, when a neat northerly allowed them to set the main and Code Zero. From then on the Lagoon 40 sped up to a consistent 8 kts in 12kts of wind, Lagoons can sail quick. Offshore sailor Sam Davies explains the leap in performance with the new generation foils to PlanetSail's Matt Sheahan. Davies and her co-skipper Paul Meilhat were the first to fit the new blades last season and had thousands of miles under their belts as they started this year's Transat Jacques Vabre. They are also well ahead of the curve when it comes to understanding how to work with intelligent autopilots. Goose wing, or wing on wing, what do you call it? We show you how we sail wing on wing using a polled-out genoa and prevented main (or mizzen). Just as we think this sailing life can't get any better a fierce squall hits as we sail into trouble inside a rocky anchorage. This is a desolate part of Indonesia and we can’t afford to have any big problems here because there will be no-one to help. With reefs sprinkling the seabed, it's about the worst place for our genoa furler to seize. The only thing we can do is get out of danger fast with the foresail fully extended and run straight into the storm. With the boat moving forward, we jump into action and pull down the sail in gale force winds. Our major concern was not to let the sail fall into the water as the boat bucked and rolled. It took all our strength and team skills to get the job done. With the sail securely fastened to the guard rails we were clear to head into the cove and work out what had just happened. Eileen and I walk or run this at least three times a week and this time I have the pleasure of doing it with my son Everett who is visiting for the week. In this relatively short out and back run, you will see a beautiful and interesting coast as we pass by the Shilaoren Swimming Beach, Qingdao Planning Exhibition Hall, Sculpture Park, Sculpture Art Museum and Polar Ocean World. Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
