Here is finally the first installment of our 5 Day sailing trip my son Nathan and I took to the Florida Keys in May of 2019. We started in Key Largo's Pennekamp State Park and sailed west to the Channel 5 bridge and then back east. Some of the trip is out in Hawk Channel and some in Florida Bay. We stopped at two reefs off shore and then finally I got to sail with dolphins... what a thrill! The ClubSwan 36 has been eagerly awaited in the racing scene. The new one design was launched last year and due to make her big appearance on the scene in 2020 - clearly that's been put on hold for the time being. Designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian the ClubSwan 36 is a radical one design with a number of key details including a single C section daggerboard system that runs through the entire boat and a super skinny rig. Yet, as her designer explains, this is not simply another boat for the professional scene, the ClubSwan 36 is still a high performance machine, but aimed at amateur owner/drivers and their crews.

We visit the school at Roderick Bay, look at the work from a local carver, watch the dancing parrot, take a dip below the waves at Maravagi Resort and sail to an island next to the disused resort at Anuhu Island for a bbq.

The lockdown in Spain is extended with increased measures as we continue life at sea anchored in the Mar Menor. We begin to realise we are here for the long haul. This is our new home and we must embrace it. When the weather is good we can go paddle boarding and even sailing. When it is bad we are confined below decks. Water, as ever, is an issue. We have no water maker. We negotiate filling up at a nearby marina while some other marinas are completely closed. There’s no sign yet of an end to the international crisis caused by COVID-19. Friendships are one thing, but the bonds forged with friends on ships while crossing seas…well, those are on a whole other level.  And that is where our dear friend Kate comes in. We first met Kate and her husband Rufus in Panama. It was one of those fast forged, easy-going connections.  We snorkeled, shared sundowners and explored Panama together.  We even rang in the New Year together. Then, an opportunity came about.  Rufus and Kate were jumping ship.  They were leaving their current crew position to move up the ranks.  Kate was able to move on but Rufus still needed to finish training the new crew.  So, we invited Kate to sail from Panama to Ecuador with us while Rufus finished up the job. And well, the rest is history. It was three months of adventures, a lifetime of memories and one of the hardest “until next time” we’ve had to say. Maybe naieve but we hadn't expected a center of tourism like the BVI would just send boats away without knowing where to go. All countries around us are closed in the meantime, and people living in isolation on their boat should be the least of the worries each country has to face in these times. Our first visit at the Government Dock was a bit of a shock. Luckily one day later our neighbour found out that the Immigration HQ in Road Town center was giving extensions to people already in the BVI, so after a couple of hours we were feeling all legal and welcome again. If you have to stay in isolation, being on a Lagoon 52S in the BVI is probably one of the best places to be. Were totally self sufficient on our cat, making water in pristine turquoise bays and with plenty of food and fuel on board. If necessary we could stay like this for months without setting a foot on land. Our 40Gb Digicel subscription, valid in 22 Caribbean countries, helps us to stay in touch with the outside world (and reality)… UPDATE : we are not allowed to move anymore during 2 weeks of 24h curfew, don't know the reasoning behind that as long as we stay on the boat but we'll probably better stay here for a while.

The side of the starboard hull got damaged in a storm before we bought the boat. With the limited supplies here in the middle of nowhere, we had to come up with a smart solution, and used a downspout for a rain gutter to repair the damage. We sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are safe. We will do everything to bring sunshine and exotic landscapes into your homes. In this episode we pass the Strait of Gibraltar. First we will fill our tanks with tax-free fuel, hoping it will last one year. We pass next to big cargo ships once again, and we find that it is much easier during the day. You see the distance, you can distinguish moving and static objects. We recommend everyone to do it while there’s sunlight, it is more reassuring. We pass next to Europe Point, which we discovered walking in our last episode. We grab some fruits and it is time to hoist the sails. I do my best to explain how we did it this time, starting with the jib. We are proud of Nomad Citizen crew, because everybody helped actively to hoist the main sail, even Tara. Sailing around the world is amazing, exactly for these rewarding moments. We spend the day on our sailboat, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Incredible feeling. The full moon is rising on the East the sun is immersing into the ocean on the West. Europe on our right side, Africa on the left. There’s one last gybe to do, which will take us from the direction of Morocco, straight towards Spain. We are heading to an anchorage on Bolonia beach, where we will spend a few days enjoying this magnificent part of the world in bikini. Thanks for watching, we will be back next week!
