SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #121 : MAD PROPS (and Expensive Props) Hello Friends, On this weeks episode we pull the prop off of our 1965 Alberg 30 Sailboat. It was a complete loss due to electrolytic corrosion. For any of you who are just tuning in to our channel, This boat sat at the dock for 6 years without moving and likely didn't have the bottom done for about a decade. This kind of neglect meant that who knows when the last time a zinc was put on the boat. Once we hauled out the yard foreman Brad looked at the chip in the prop and pulled out his pocket knife and carved a piece of bronze off like it was cheese. He told me to pull it off and take it to Valley Prop in Ventura to find a replacement. He also told me to bring my gear ration information and all of my boat specs so Brian at Valley prop could tell me the correct pitch we would need for our boat. We first checked the salvage shop down the street hoping to put off buying a new prop for a while as this was SOOOOO not in the budget for the haul out. All the used props looked to be in about the same condition so I took Brad's advice and went down to Valley Prop. We got a new prop for $375 which wouldn't be a big deal if we were just buying the prop but with the growing mountain of expenses this haul out was creating it was an added stress to say the least. I learned a ton at Valley prop and I am grateful they let me film the conversation so I could share it with all of you. The Double Sheet Bend is one of if not the best way to join to ropes of different diameter. You can learn how to tie a double sheet bend in less than two minutes. Here at Bottom Up Boat we prefer the Double Sheet Bend over the Single Sheet bend, the two loops around the bight give it key advantages over the single sheet bend. The two loops make the knot more secure before the knot has been put under load and easier to untie as the double loops cause the knot to tighten on the bight rather than the loop wedging itself at the top of the bend. Some 5-10% - needs a respirator that helps them breath. What happens if you do not get a respirator? I want to teach you a way to fight back. I have suffered similar symptoms many times and developed a strategy, some techniques. In a worst case scenario of Covid 19 you get Pneumonia. Liquid enter your lungs - you drown. Your own breathing can not get oxygen into the blood - you suffocate. Slowly. You or your body will fight till the end, it will be hard to breath. ARDS Your body is in pain, immune system burning you out. You will tire out - low oxygen in blood and brain. - I have been climbing mountains, spending many weeks over 6000 meter, up to 7000 meters. Its hard to oxygenate yourself at those levels. O2 levels go down: 90% 80% I have been doing extreme freediving at world championships level. I have fainted from low oxygen, many times I have suffered secondary drowning, liquid in my lungs (just like pneumonia, ARDS) No hospital, I couldn´t oxygenate myself, I lost consciousness. In freediving I have damaged my lungs, the alveolis. Liquid in my lungs. Pullomary edema. Similar to pneuomonia. Your lungs don´t function. What did I do. I will tell you: 1) Seek professional help, you need to get into intensive care. 2) Don´t do anything strenuous, nothing. Don´t move. 3) Don´t lie down fully, remain half sitting, legs a bit up. 4) Don´t eat any heavy food, drink your nutrition. 5) Take some medicin that brings the fever down. 6) No other medicine, you want to feel the symptoms, not hide them. 7) Keep warm, but breath fresh air. 8) There is humidity in your lung - ventilate deep, get it out, don´t hyperventilate. 9) Don´t drink to much. 10) If you can, get rid of any foam/liquid in your lung or trachea. 11) Take control of your breathing. Full breaths. Inhale through your nose. You need to pressurize the lungs - just like a respirator. You need to open them alveolis up. That is what modified yogic breathing can do for you. Full inhale, hold, wait, release slowly. Again... You dont need to breath faster only deeper... and hold. Pressurize your lungs! This is a type of breath that never happens normally. It takes focus. Keep doing it. Good luck EDIT: Some comments that viewers added... - If you feel you have the strength and it feels right: take a hot shower. It may soften you up a bit, help you get mucus out of lungs/throat. - Another suggestion, do not block the fever with medicine, let it run fairly high: argument was: virus don´t like high temperature. - Another suggestion, try lying on your stomach and try and see how that feels, may help your breathing to reach other parts of your lungs more easily. -

Weiter geht es im Winterlager: Die Dichtungen an Deck waren in der Vorwoche entfernt worden und wegen Corona drohten Einschränkungen bei Arbeiten an der Yacht im Winterlager. Wir haben also den Entschluss gefasst, in einer Hauruck-Aktion eine Not-Operation im Winterlager durchzuführen - morgens hin und abends wieder zurück! Die Aussicht die Yacht wochenlang ohne Dichtungen der Witterung auszusetzen war nicht gerade ermutigend. It is pretty easy to remove the injectors and get them checked, but a bit more difficult to install them again. Under the injectors you have a insert and under that insert there is a copper ring, and the whole thing is of course stuck pretty well so quite a job to remove without a special tool. I then bought a internal bearring remover in the correct size, but then there was a new problem. You also need new copper washers and have to tighten the injectors with a torque wrench. Nossa expectativa para chegar na Martinica era bem alta! Primeira ilha francesa do Caribe! Cheia de queijos deliciosos, Carrefour, lojas náuticas e muitas outras coisas pra gente explorar. Eu falei sobre pão francês? Essa iguaria que nunca temos a bordo? Rs Aproveitamos para soldar nossa retranca, que foi uma tarefa árdua, mas divertida! Tirar, colocar no bote, colocar no lugar... mas a gente já estava ficando craque. As marinas da Martinica são muito legais, cheias de coisas interessantes, lojinhas, assistências técnicas, barzinhos... os estacionamentos de botinhos são inacreditavelmente lotados! Mas a verdade é que o povo é meio mau humorado... nós nunca tínhamos tido uma experiência tão ruim com franceses. E, claro, estamos acostumados a viajar e entender as diferenças culturais, mas na Martinica a sensação que tivemos é que não éramos bem vindos. De qualquer maneira, a gente estava lá e ia se divertir, comer bem e tomar Pernod! E pra isso a Martinica caiu como uma luva!

Many ancient seafaring societies had their own ceremonies for launching a new ship. The Greeks wore olive branch wreaths around their heads, drank wine to honor the gods, and poured water on the new boat to bless it.
