Our film about buying a new boat seems to have attracted a load of new subscribers. So for those of you that are new to our channel this is a short summary of the boats that came before, and the thinking behind each purchase. #homeschooling #teachingathome #teachingkids We started homeschooling in October 2017 and have been working on it ever since. It is not easy travelling the world by sailboat and schooling your children at the same time but here we show you how we got prepared and then how we have managed it so far. There is always room for improvement but what we did first was to gather up everything we could relating to the school curriculum. Then we brought as many fictional and non fictional books we could. We also brought a stack of art materials and then looked at how kids can learn using resources online and with apps on iphones and ipads. As the months passed we realised that there were other challenges we would have to face such as motivation of our students and the parent teacher dynamic ! But on a good note we realised that the kids were learning above and beyond the normal curriculum, they were learning how to survive by conserving all the essential resources such as water and energy and how to resolve basic problems such as where to park our dinghy to get on shore and shop for essentials...the kind of thing you don't need to worry about when you park your car in the local supermarket car park. We also realised that by interacting with our environment, we can learn a lot more than we can in books because we are experiencing it with all our senses and it is immediate. Okay , I didn't explain all this in the blog but I think it is important to mention . PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on most of our video blogs (and on other family channels) due to safeguarding issues regarding minors on the YouTube platform. Travel, banned.  Flights, grounded.  Borders, closed.  Quarantined.  Stranded.  In route back to our tiny floating home, we were stopped.  The world was shutting down and we weren’t allowed to make the final flight home.  It was canceled. Now here we are, in Fiji for the foreseeable future.  Self-isolating…waiting, pining for home. But, mother nature doesn’t bend to human pandemics, rules or lockdowns.  She rages on. There is a monster category 5 cyclone claiming lives in the Solomon Islands, ripping Vanuatu to shreds and heading straight for us.  Then, directly to Tonga…where, our home is parked. I feel we are being tested, tried, possibly pranked, in a very unfunny way.  Whatever the case, here is the story about that time we survived Cyclone Harold, while in isolation in Fiji during a pandemic. WHO ARE WE? We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living off the grid and exploring the world for almost a decade. Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible. This is footage from 1 month ago, just before we ad to stop sailing and attach our nomad home, with no permission to leave the harbor. This is Bolonia Beach, and as tourists from Belgium said, it has to be the most beautiful in whole Spain. White sand and transparent waters. Bikini paradise. We passed the Strait of Gibraltar and arrived to the anchorage during the night. The next morning we woke up to a magnificent landscape. Marvin prepared the dinghy and we headed towards the beach. We saw ruins that looked like an ancient Roman theater from the sailboat, so we decided to visit. Unfortunately the site of Baleo Claudia was closed to visitors, but we could fly the drone and see how did this ancient glorious city look like. The next day we started with spearfishing, chilling on the beach and sports. We wanted to try out our new sandbags (Rogue). We filled them with sand and did our crossfit training session (WOD). This is one way to be able to lift while sailing around the world, without putting extra weight on our sailing vessel. After spending two days ins this wonderful surrounding we hoisted ur sails towards Barbate. Our plan was to stay a few days in an anchorage I front of the beach. The wind was 10 to 15 knots stronger than predicted so we had to take shelter in the harbor. Apparent wind is the direction of the wind what you feel while sailing. However, it is not the true wind direction. In this video I explain how to figure out what the difference is and how to use that information. Understanding why the true wind direction is always aft of the apparent wind will help you understand sail trim and aid in getting up wind.

Erik Bowers is a former Olympic level laser sailor who has been coaching at Lauderdale Yacht Club for 3 years now. Erik has many accolades under his belt, including recently winning the 2019 Melges 14 US National Championship. Erika Reineke is a Four-time Collegiate All-American, Four-time College Singlehanded National Champion, 2017 Quantum Women's Sailor of the Year, and the 2017 US Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year. Erika, too, is an Olympic level laser radial sailor who has been coaching at Lauderdale Yacht Club many years now.
