-- WEEK 3 of our COVID-19 LOCKDOWN! -- We are getting a little confident with our fiberglassing skills! We have made our own head floors! During this time in lockdown we haven't been able to bring people in to help us with some of our projects so we have had to try and do them ourselves. What's the worst that could happen? We don't want to sit around wasting time while waiting for lockdown to end (who even knows when that will be considering we were just told that we have an extra 14 days being added onto our lockdown) so we are getting crafty. We work on getting our head floors made by making molds of the heads and fiberglassing over the molds. We then fiberglass them into the bilges along with fiberglassing the rest of the heads to get them ready for painting. This has not been as simple as our video makes it seem, there were a lot of sleepless nights for Robin as he planned out everything that needed to be done in order to make a mold that would invert the floor into the right shape to fit the shower drains and make sure that they are leveled in a way that water won't accumulate on any point of the floor. We then fiberglass bandages, peel ply and fiberglass micro balloons to make sure everything is secured in place in the bathroom, on the floors and the plumbing. Next week we will show you the results of removing the peel ply. We paint our anchor chain in increments so it's easier to see how much chain we are letting out at a time. This is hard because we have to run the chain under the yacht and onto the dock behind Saoirse in order to paint the chain on a flat surface. As we use our time wisely to get the jobs done that we can during lock down, Grumpy the seagull is going a little loopy... Episode 4 of our adventures in the Bahamas' Berry Islands! This week we explore Cistern Cay, a deserted isle in the Berry Islands that once served as a drug drop for a Columbian Kingpin. We walk roads long forgotten and check out the runway where the sunken airplane wreck (from Episode 3) attempted to take lift off. We then head over to nearby Great Harbour Cay Marina. With an oil leak in the starboard engine, the marina was the best place for us to arrange for a new part to be flown in from Florida. The marina is a designated hurricane hole. If you ever find yourself in the Berry Islands during hurricane season, this is a recommended spot! Once we are settled in, we head into town to get groceries for the week. Luckily, the marina provides bicycles to guests and we were able to take a fun ride into town. And wouldn't you know it, after a long day James finds a friendly Manatee in our marina and takes a dip with him. Seriously cool to watch him/her drink from the waterhose. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. The Exuma Islands were such a sanctuary for us, at least before things went down. We are still in March, 2020, and Bahamas is still a comfortable place to be for cruisers. Alex and Cory have become family, and as every family around the world these days, we do everything together! We leave Highbourne Cay and set sail for Norman's Cay to explore Pablo Escobars drug smuggling airplane from the 1970's, before heading into the national park and Shroud Cay for a superfun dinghy adventure across to the Atlantic Ocean. Our world is currently full of fish, turtles and sharks - blue skies, crystal clear water and silky sand. What a life! Little did we know of what was to come, but we had heard a little bit about the worlds development and we kept our distance to people and land with very few exceptions. So going to shore during our dinghy adventure was our first experience with social distancing. We quickly got back on/in the water though!! Our route onboard Amira Liveaboard will concentrate on the more remote regions of southern Raja Ampat known as Misool. On offer here is a vast range of snorkeling sites from coral covered walls, reef flats, pinnacles and placid lagoons which all play host to a wealth of marine life. Fields of gorgonian fans can be seen in the shallows as they grow up the island walls, whilst colorful hard coral gardens rise to the surface - this really is some of the finest reef snorkeling you are likely to see anywhere in the world. Not only this - the reefs here are in superb condition. Expect fish life in abundance, from colorful reef dwelling species to larger pelagic species like schooling batfish and barracuda. Manta's are frequently seen feeding on the surface and hovering above their favorite cleaning station, and it's not uncommon to see whales passing by from the liveaboard at certain times of the year.
