In April 2020, with most of the world still sheltered in place and eager to see our way of life open back up, AIM (the parent company of Passagemaker magazine) created a Virtual Boat Show for its audience. One of the early episodes in this series features Passagemaker’s editor-in-chief, Andrew Parkinson, talking with Jeff Merrill via Skype video to discuss the current trawler market and how it has been affected by the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Jeff and Andrew discussed topics ranging from how buyers can currently continue their search amid the pandemic to what we might expect to see in the future of boating. At JMYS, we have always enjoyed Passagemaker’s content: its magazine, website, e-newsletters and TrawlerFest events. The new Virtual Boat Show provides an innovative way for boaters to enjoy a boat show experience from the safety of home and has given all of us who love boating the opportunity to stay in touch in spite of social distancing. We have posted the interview on the JMYS YouTube channel. You can also log in to see the other virtual events they have created by going to www.passagemaker.com and then click on the Compass Rose Icon that looks like this: Thank you, Andrew Parkinson, AIM and Passagemaker for opening up this new way of interacting. It’s not the same as being there in person, but for now it’s the next best thing. We are all looking forward to being back on the docks with all of you soon. #JMYS, #TrawlerTalk, #PassageMaker For more information please visit: http://jmys.com Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeffmerrillyachtsales/?fref=nf Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/merrillyachts Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeffmerrilljmys/ Jeff Merrill Get in touch with Jeff via Email: Jeff@JMYS.com or Cell: +1 949.355.4950

Having a man over board is one of the worse thing that can happen to any sailor, especially when you plan to sail offshore in rough seas. There is only one way to minimize this risk, permanent attention to safety and regular drills. Here is the way the Clipper Race teaches and executes MOB recovery, off course this video isn't exhaustive, there is a lots of things that happen below deck while on deck is getting ready (like emergency call on VHF, Sat phone...etc). Also on Clipper boats, you wear you lifejacket at all times on deck, always tethered on above 15kts of TWS and at night. Only good practice and regular training can make a difference in the harsh environment that is the ocean. A few details: I talk about "diver"and "swimmer", when it's in fact a Rescue Swimmer, which means one person equiped adequately to go and make contact with the casualty. At some point I talk about the ‘IOR Flag’. The flag is actually an International Maritime Signal Flag ‘O’ or ‘Oscar’ which signifies Man Overboard. The Danbuoy is the bit that is IOR endorsed. ‘IOR’ stands for ‘International Offshore Rule’ and is the bit that specifies what equipment offshore racing boats should carry and what they must comply with. So technically, it is not an IOR Flag. Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!! Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under Vlog 25 Our gopro fell in the water and sank all the way to the bottom, 10 meters deep where it stayed for more then 2 minutes. Hermen swam down and picked it up but there came salt water running out of it.. We dis-assembled it and now its about time to put it back together to see if its still working. We very much hope so, because otherwise we can't film the beautiful underwater world while snorkelling and diving... On the 17th of April 2020 we left marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtDOpi7ydzdcRK1H7fEiQFQ . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. Hello Everyone! As our trip continues, we continue to be amazed at the beauty of the Bahamas. We anchor at Pipe Cay and dingy around to Compass Cay to see the Bubble Bath. We check out the reefs around Pipe Cay and walk the surrounding sand banks with some friends we've been buddy boating with. Hope you all enjoy and stay tuned in the next few weeks! COVID-19 UPDATE As of our time in Norman's Cay: At this time, the Bahamas started shutting down bars and restaurants. Word of a curfew came about and social distancing was being implemented. We checked out the marina at Compass Cay and they were not allowing new boats to come in. Word of the first couple cases in Nassau also came about. This is the story of two Northern folk who dropped the norm and sold it all to explore the world by sail. We quit life as we knew it, bought a factory-fresh, Lagoon 42 and hopped the big pond to our current home sea of the Caribbean. Our “backyard view” is in constant rotation as well as our adventures.Through it all we have gained great knowledge on what originally felt like a great mystery. While we have not spotted the illusive Jaguar Shark just yet, we have experienced a whole new life with daily adventure. This is where our story begins. Drone Footage by Dag Heinen and Cyrus Dietz.
The sailing family crew of Element, living aboard a Catana 471 Catamaran are becalmed during sunset on their overnight passage from Sardinia Italy to the Balearic Islands of Spain, as they make their way out of the Mediterranean Sea towards the Atlantic Ocean. Just thought we would share the breathless beauty of the moment with some accompanying music… About Us: The goal of our adventure, is to explore our world by sailing around it and to soak in its different history and cultures and to share that experience with our children, so that they have a global perspective as they grow older. The goal of this channel is to share our experiences with anyone that is interested in traveling and encourage you to explore and experience new cultures while meeting great people, not just by sailing, but by any means possible… Music Credits: 00:00 “In a Perfect World” - Howard Harper Barnes Provided by Epidemic Sound www.epidemicsound.com Sherrie's Blog: https://keepcalmmomonelement@blogspot.com Sherrie's Element Instagram: @Adventures_of_Element Shaun's Element Instagram: @svElement Paige's Art and Photo Instagram: @ryanthesailor Follow our boat on NOFOREIGNLAND: https://www.noforeignland.com/boat/4981017095962624

I wanted to put a quick video out there on current state and the mood of the catamaran market during the time of Covid 19. It's been a super weird period of time. I personally thought the market was going to dry up, and I was already making plans to not sell anything for the next 3-9 months. I couldn't have been more wrong. [Port] Todos nós temos uma história para contar durante essa pandemia. Existem aspectos negativos e positivos. Aqui eu vou compartilhar o que aconteceu comigo como pesquisadora marinha e educadora em uma pequena ilha do Caribe. [Eng] Everyone has a story to tell during this pandemic. There are positive and negative aspects, here I will share what happened with me as marine researcher and educator in a small island in the Caribbean.
Over 10 years ago I went to the small island of Pele in Vanuatu where the community got together to create a marine protected area (MPA) to improve fisheries. A couple of years latter they built a community eco-lodge, I was their first guest. Here the locals tell me a bit about this story and the changes they have seen. They talk about conservation, sustainable development and spillover effect in their own words. I wondering how is Pele Island now after 10 years since I have been... An amazing little island with bright and kind people in the Pacific Ocean.

This episode is about sharing the lessons from an initial mechanical failure that occurred in the middle of the Tasman Sea, that set off a chain of events over the course of 520nm, resulting in the Coastguard rescue of a 45-foot Beneteau yacht and its crew of 6. As a sequel to episode 88, skipper David Hows conducts a full post mortem with the crew, who share their thoughts on what they would do differently, how they would prepare and what they got right in this multifaceted, near disaster story that took place 4 days after departing Hobart, Australia to sail 1,250nm across the Tasman Sea to Picton, New Zealand. The crew of the Ocean Gem had to face a steering cable failure in the early morning hours, followed by two crash gybes that snapped the boom preventer and broke the boom in half. What followed 500nm later was the failure of the steel emergency tiller and then the autopilot, causing total steering loss and ultimately a call for a rescue tow from while mid Cook Strait and 53nm from Nelson.
