It can feel lonely, left out & down right depressing just going through our daily routines & catching any spare time the kids would have for us. Well, we decided to do something about that, we set off on a journey around Australia in our RV until karma had other plans. Our lives took a different direction after this, which allowed us to grab a lifetime dream that we didn’t think was ever possible but in reality, it was. Please join two boomers as we embark on our new chapter & how we manage life & family from our MacIntosh 47’ sailboat heading home to Australia.

On May 29, 2020, students at Newport’s Thompson Middle School tuned in to a webinar aboard SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. Along with Dan O'Connor, our program director, and our crew Miranda, Eric, and Jackson, students learned about about simple machines and mechanical advantage as the crew used a pulley system to lift and transfer a ship's liferaft from the deck to the dock. This video is a recording of the livestream from the ship and is provided courtesy of Taylor Rock, science teacher at Thompson Middle School. Thanks to all the students for joining us, and enjoy the video! Note: As this was a livestream directly from the ship, audio/video may at some points be choppy or cut out, but this didn't prevent any information from being shared during the class.

How two architects turned this cheap old lifeboat into an Arctic liveaboard cruiser - Yachting World
Clearly Stødig is not a sailing yacht, nor anything close to one. Indeed she is far from a conventional motoryacht. But sometimes there are vessels which may not have a mast and sails, but which appeal to an adventurous spirit just as much as any teak-decked, canvassed yacht. Stødig is such a boat. ► Follow Guylee and David's continued adventures at: http://arctic-lifeboat.com/, https://www.facebook.com/arcticlifeboat or https://www.instagram.com/arcticlifeboat ► Produced by https://www.sunflaresolar.com/ ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Yachting World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/user/yachtingworld?sub_confirmation=1 ► For the latest reviews, new gear launches and tour news, visit our website here - http://www.yachtingworld.com ► Like us on Facebook here - https://www.facebook.com/yachtingworldmagazine ► Follow us on Twitter here - https://twitter.com/yachtingworld ► Feel free to comment below! ► Remember to hit that LIKE button if you enjoyed it :)

After attempting to align the rudder tube correctly, I needed to remove the nylon bearings/bushings so as to be able to weld the post in place without destroying the bearings. This proved to more than I bargained for as the bottom bearing appears to be seized in the tube! Preparing and tooling-up to get the bearing out!

Did you know that sharks have a sixth sense? They have the ability to detect electricity with specialized gel-filled pores found in their snouts, called ampullae of Lorenzini. With this at home activity, kids can use magnet to mimic how hammerhead sharks use this sensory system to find stingrays, their favorite prey, hiding in sand. In October of 2019 Balance Catamarans founder Phil Berman addressed a South African Embassy sponsored Dinner for boat builders. He discussed his history in South Africa and touched upon his views about race, apartheid, and the struggle for social justice. In light of the recent global protests over race and power we want to stand in solidarity with everyone struggling for a more just and humane world where racism is no longer tolerated.

Vlog #8 While on our way from Newport to Crescent City the autopilot was having trouble trying to handle the swell. So Captain Trav took over, thinking he could do a better job. He was really celebrating his massive victory but later watching the footage back we realized he BARELY beat the autopilot at all. There is no better feeling than completing a boat job, especially when it involves filling holes in your boat! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed in Febuary before the global pandemic really took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. If you would like to contribute towards Nandji's repairs please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and the inside scoop! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, being back in the boatyard this early was not what we had planned for 2020, but in hindsight, I guess now noone had planned for the current world situation... With the repairs to Nandji now in full swing, the destruction is over and the construction has begun. After sanding back the hull to bare fibreglass and then exposing the damaged timbers, I removed all the broken wood and employed a local Thai contractor to complete the re planking of the hull. As I had my hands full building the new rudder for NAndji, I relied on the carpentry skills of the contractors. Thailand is known for great woodworkers so I was confident they would do the job to a high standard. After re planking the the hull with a local hard wood, they continued to begin the caulking of the seams with an old fashion wood building technique using cotton thread. Traditionally, when the boat is launched back in the water, the cotton expands and fills the seams to prevent any water coming in. I was surprised to see this happening on Nandji as I figured it would all be epoxy glued. Not to be! If it worked for all those years, I am sure it will continue to work now! This is a little different though as in the old school days there was no epoxy filler layered on the top and then fibreglassed over again! It is a great feeling to have Nandji steadily becoming one again and she is not far off splash day! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! We transit through the Panama Canal for the second time in 1 week and we only paid for it once on our catamaran! On this episode of WE|Sail, we take our catamaran through the canal locks of Panama this time on our floating home and open the doors to a whole new adventure. We say goodbye to the Atlantic Ocean and helloooo Pacific! Ourselves and our boat will enter Pacific waters for the first time. We had been looking forward to this chapter of our journey and are so thrilled to have accomplished such a major feat. By no means is it a 13,000 nautical mile sail around the Cape Horn, just to get to the other ocean it still was memorable and exactly how we had hoped it would be by passing through the Panama Canal. How to Download FREE Satellite Images in 2020 using SAS Planet and load them into OpenCPN in 5 minutes! All the links you need are below. And, you can copy the text summary to use as a reference. Many thanks to all the contributors for creating these open source tools. 01:11 INSTALL THE SOFTWARE (Links Below) Firstly, install open CPN. Now go to SAS Planet in the link provided and download the zip file. Find the file and downloads, right click and extract to your root directory. You don't install SAS planet and state. Copy the executable and send to your desktop. Double click the icon to open and scroll through the list of imagery available. SAS planet has done all the work for you. Linking to Google maps, Google satellite images, satellite images from Bing sonar charts from Navionics and many more. 02:02 SELECT BEST IMAGERY Move to your area of interest and choose what imagery gives you the best detail zoom in and find the limit where no more detail is offered. 02:20:18 -- 02:36:27 3. FIND THE ZOOM LIMIT The zoom limit is shown in the bottom left hand corner. I find 18 is about the limit for satellite imagery, zoom out and choose a broader zoom level. For general scale viewing 14 works pretty well. 02:37 SELECT YOUR AREA Now I go to operations selection manager and select polygonal selection. Click the battery of the area of interest and click the green checkbox to finish. 02:54:13 -- 03:11:25 5. DOWNLOAD THE DATA Now with selection manager, open on the download tab, select zoom levels, 14 and 18. Make sure your map overlay is set to the imagery you chose in this case. Bing satellite maps and click start. 03:19 EXPORT MBTiles FILE Now, we need to export this cashed image as an MBTile file. This is a high resolution geo referenced database that open CPN can read, go to operations, selection manager and select last selection. Open the export tab. Choose the MB tiles. 1.2 option. Go to the save to box and choose the directory where you store your charts. Check the zoom levels you used previously. Leave everything else on the defaults and click start the export. Doesn't take long. 04:12 LOAD NEW IMAGE INTO OpenCPN We're almost there. Now start OpenCPN go to options and main chats. Add the directory. You just stored your MB tile file. If the directory is not already there, click scan charts and update database, click apply and vain. Okay. You will see a red box outlining the satellite images. You just installed. Select the image layer to view your new satellite imagery, zoom in to see firstly, your 14 level zoom. And then you are 18 levels. Zoom pan around to confirm you have what you expected.
