Auf Wangerooge angekommen legten wir nach der anstrengenden Nachtfahrt erst einmal einen Hafentag ein und machten einen Ausflug ins Inseldorf von Wangerooge. Später machten wir uns noch an die Törnplanung für den Schlag nach Cuxhaven. Es sollte der kürzere Weg durch die Telegraphenbalje, das Wangerooger Wattfahrwasser und die Blaue Balje werden um schließlich in die Elbe zu kommen. Am Nachmittag gingen wir noch an den nahe gelegenen Strand und fanden leider eine Plastikmüll-Apokalypse samt toter Robbe vor. Uns war ja klar, dass Plastikmüll ein großes Problem in den Weltmeeren und damit auch in der Nordsee ist. Aber wenn man wirklich mal an einen Strand kommt, der nicht täglich für den Tourismus gereinigt wird, ist das Ausmaß echt erschreckend... Am nächsten Tag ging es dann bei immer noch frischem Wind zunächst durchs Watt und dann mit gerefften Segeln Richtung Elbe, die wir uns dann gegen das nun ablaufende Wasser hoch kämpfen mussten. Als Teilnehmer lernt man die Grundfertigkeiten, um ein Segelboot zu steuern, zum Beispiel, wie man Gegenwind nutzt, um ans Ziel zu kommen. We get new sheaves and start to tackle the packing gland on our rudder that's been leaking. After seeing some rusty water leaking from a crack in the rudder we determined that we need to remove the rudder for closer inspection but this is proving to be more of a challenge that we bargained for. The packing gland is frozen in place and the bolts in the skeg won't budge. Somedays are harder than others when you're refitting an old sailboat. We are a family preparing to sail around the world in our electric sailboat. Light winds prevail, interrupted by calms and a period of moderate headwinds. The latter causes the aft end of the port reefing comb to pull away from the boom, prompting me to attempt a somewhat creative repair. The modifications to the windvane are also performing well, except that the trim tab has developed annoying vibrations at certain speeds, to which I try to insert bushings as a temporary cure. The kids get on the helm and steer the boat...even with "No Licence To Sail" as Yewan points out. We take our sail boat through the wild and uncharted Mboli pass in the Solomon Islands. It's one of the most exotic and beautiful places we have ever visited, and almost no one goes there. The crack is a narrow passage through two islands that creates a channel that looks like a river. We meet some friendly villagers who offer for us to fill up our water tanks, the only catch is that we have to figure out get the water all the way out to our sail boat. On the 4th of July weekend – 2020, we had 2 guests onboard who wanted to learn what it’s like to sail a catamaran, visit Monkey Island, AND celebrate a birthday! The evening before our sail, Kylee and James joined us – Kylee even 20 weeks pregnant – but you could barely tell. The next morning, Stephen showed James his way around the helm station, secured the deck, prepared the dock lines and we cast off with an ebb tide. But not 30 minutes into our sail, one of our engine overheated. So, Captain Stephen quickly got to work while underway. The belt had frayed, luckily we had a spare, he replaced it and we were back on plan. With that repair done, and wind speed at 8-12 knots from behind, we hoisted the parasailor and were elated to see Kylee and James surprise when they saw we were now a pirate ship. Then on to fishing. James caught his first ocean fish, a king mackerel. We enjoyed a super relaxing sail down to St. Helena Sound, South Carolina. Nature’s timing was perfect, as we caught the flood tide for arrival, down this very long reefy inlet. We anchored by Otter Island, a popular spot for day boaters, and went for a swim. We were all thrilled to watch dozens of pelicans diving on bait balls of menhaden all around the boat. But if you’ve never swam in menhaden waters, you should know that the oils get in your swimsuits and will stink like crazy if not washed and dried completely after! Menhaden are flat, bright silver with soft flesh and a deeply forked tail and grow to around 15 inches long. They are prized for their oily flesh, and feed many birds, including egrets, ospreys, seagulls, northern gannets, pelicans, and herons, all birds we see on this east coast. If you ever wonder where your omega-3 fish oil supplements come from, it’s from menhaden. You will also find the oil in lipstick and animal feed. Dinner that night was local shrimp from the commercial shrimp dock right on Bohicket Creek. Kylee and James enjoyed the evening on the top deck, which we eventually interrupted with a birthday song and ice cream cake for James. The following morning, after coffee on the top deck, we headed off on an adventure to visit Monkey Island. To get to Monkey Island, (really Morgan Island), you head inland down the Morgan River until you round the bend and there it is – can’t miss the signs. Over 4000 free-ranging, Indian-origin rhesus monkeys with the herpes B virus inhabit this 635-acre upland island property surrounding by 4489 acres of marshland. Initially 1400 came from the Puerto Rico Primate Research Center. And yes, don’t get too close – they moved from Puerto Rico because they were infecting humans., causing severe central nervous system disease, resulting in permanent neurological dysfunction or death. If not treated early, it has an 80% fatality rate. Dinawan, a small island just 10km south of Kota Kinabalu has everything you need from a tropical island: coral sand beach, blue lagoon, wooden stilted houses, gentle lapping water. We’re island hopping today and get to see what it takes to get this ship moving...and it’s a completely different world.  The sheer size is one thing but, add in the weight and deep draft of S/Y Millennium and it requires a new mode of thinking in comparison to our catamaran Curiosity.  It's a fun challenge, and fascinating to experience something so familiar yet so foreign. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade. Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
