In the Southwest of Mallorca there is a little village called Sant Elm. What an idyllic place. Nice beaches, great views and a chance to enjoy fresh fish in on of the restaurants there. As we enter the second week of prep for the ARC transatlantic crossing, we focus on converting Talisman from a boat that’s bombproof at sea, to one that is also ready to go off the grid for extended periods. We take a pessimistic view, envisioning up to 30 days alone on the ocean. During that time we’ll need all the solar we can capture, enough fuel to run our genset for four hours a day, food for four, and have a watermaker capable of providing water for a larger than normal crew, allowing for showers and drinking water throughout the trip. We attend the ARC seminars on rigging repairs while under way, weather, and provisioning. Wendy stresses over the latter, although that doesn’t show much in this episode. The big work entails removing our old, non-functional beast of a watermaker, replacing it with a new “energy recovery” reverse osmosis unit from Eco Sistems. Jim Cudd from Sailfish Marine (Eco Sistems dealer) stops by to supervise the initial runup of the install, confirming that all is working as planned. I also add a high water alarm while our new crew member Max is put to work installing new sink faucets and toilet towers. The Oyster Yachts support team stops by (for four days), inspecting every nook and cranny of Talisman. This four-man crew has decades of experience with Oyster, and they inspect all eleven of the Oysters that are participating in the rally. They even do an extensive rigging inspection and report. This free service is one of the reasons we’re such fans of the brand. After Gilson successfully changed my Cutlass bearing, we had to go and test drive Galopin. But before all that, we saved a boat from drifting. Organized a going away party for Peter. Cast off Peter and Ayrton on their journey across the Atlantic to Nova Scotia. Did a satisfying boat project and set off sailing. It was me and Peixe. On this episode of WE|Sail, we sail to seclusion during a worldwide shutdown. After feeling like there was no place for us to go we find a peaceful river that flows directly into the Pacific Ocean. At high tide we take our Badfish Stand Up Paddles and go exploring through the freshwater rio on the north end of Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. We feel alive and refreshed paddling up the river through the rain forest. We sit and watch a family of white-faced monkey's come down to the shores drink and play all around us. Our adventurous souls continue to wander up the Rio Aguajitas as far as we could, having one of our most favorite days in Costa Rica during the worldwide lock down. Inspired by the growing doublehanded trend, Ken has been alternating races with his brother Brad and Suzy Leech. They’ve been getting to know their boat Alchemist, a Sunfast 3300, and bonding as teammates. Putting in their miles on the Sunfast has brought them a victory in each race entered to date, including taking line honors at the New England Twin/Solo.

The Bestevaer 53 Motor Yacht is the first aluminium motor yacht from the KM Yachtbuilders yard from Makkum, the Netherlands. Designed together with Dykstra Naval Architects she is recognizable as a Bestevaer thanks to her pilot house, port holes and straight bow. Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell Shore became the first women to win an Olympic gold medal in sailing at the 1988 Olympic Games in South Korea. The sailing competition of the '88 Games was the first time that a separate event was created exclusively for women athletes. The inaugural women’s 470 Olympic competition featured teams from 21 nations. This historic performance earned them the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year honors. Hi guys, I am running a little slow with the editing at the moment as I am taking advantage of the weather to get a lot of boat projects going on including Anchormatic installation, Code 0 preparations, new anchor and chain etc etc. Anyways... this episode was at the start of the season just generally preparing. My colleague and fellow filmmaker Mario Cyr, suggested that we work together to get a shot of a polar bear swimming in the open water. As the icons of climate change, these amazing animals normally hunt on top of the ice, but climate change has forced them into the water to find food - a sevenfold increase of time in the water over the ice. Polar bears can swim 10 kph for 10 days without stopping for food or rest. A plan was hatched. Once we found “the right bear” we would roll out of our Moosehead canoe and use it block the view of the polar bear. We were wearing a significant amount of lead weight to ensure we could escape by descending deep if we had to. When we were ready with two cameras in the water, our skilled guide Solomon Maliki backed up the boat so the bear could see our heads on the surface. They bear was quite distant, but as soon as he spotted us, he quickly turned and bolted full speed in our direction. I suppose our heads looked like seal heads bobbing on the surface. I waited with a racing heart until Mario yelled “DIVE!!!” I plunged beneath the surface trying to get a shot of the bear as it swam overhead. In the rushing tidal currents, this proved to be quite difficult.
