After many hours of sweat, a few hundred drops of blood, and some tears, Avocet was finally returning to the water after her long boatyard stay, 53 days later. In this video, we wrap up painting by incorporating an unexpected galley item as well as discuss the differences between a feathering prop and a fixed blade as we share one of our recent hardware upgrades. Despite Avocet being afloat again, there is still much more work to do. Fair winds! Edit :In addition to donating our YouTube earnings to the #CreekFire victims, we will be keeping a running linktree of the GoFundMe's for the families in need. Please check out the list so far, help if you can, and share if you can't 💕 https://linktr.ee/SailingAvocet Just a reminder: you can help raise money for the fire victims by watching our youtube videos. Since falling in love with the idea of cruising years ago, Lauren has had one dream: Go sailing aboard our own boat to clear turquoise waters — just the two of us — before having kids. After two years aboard, sailing Lake Michigan, motoring down the rivers, sailing the Gulf of Mexico through the Keys, with several long stops at boatyards along the way to prep Soulianis for off-grid living & remote working, we’ve arrived in the crystal clear waters of the Bahamas — a real dream come true. Music in this episode is by Johnzo West from his brand new album “WAVES” dropping today 8.28.20! 🌊 Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk FILMED: April 2019 *** THE ABACO ISLANDS, POST-HURRICANE DORIAN: This footage was filmed prior to the utter devastation wreaked by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Dorian hit the Abaco Islands as a category 5 hurricane, with sustained winds of 185 mph, flattening most structures and leaving 70,000 people homeless. They are still rebuilding — and will be for a long time. If you’d like to help the Abacos, check out PERC - https://www.percabaco.org/ This is a 503c organization which supports a number of Abaco-based charities and is tax-deductible for U.S. residents. *** SOCIALS + BLOG Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingsoulianis/ Kirk's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kirkhateswork/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsoulianis/ Website: https://sailingsoulianis.com CAMERA GEAR https://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/camera-gear MUSIC This episode features music from Johnzo West’s new album “WAVES” released 8.28.20! 🌊 https://linktr.ee/johnzowest 0:00 Johnzo West - Dawn Patrol 5:30 Johnzo West - Tropicali 10:31 Johnzo West - Sundaze 14:32 Johnzo West - Waves 16:34 Johnzo West - Loose 19:16 Johnzo West - Waves 19:42 A Himitsu - Adventures We’re always looking for music! A call on the VHF from a local Bahamian family out fishing springs us into action! We get so much help and kindness from people in the places we visit, when we can help them out it's our way of saying Thank You So Much. The weather is changing and it's time to get a move on! We leave our beloved spot at the TTYC and seek shelter at Buena Vista Island for the night, only to spot some strange flashing lights in the sky. Is it a UFO or merely an atmospheric phenomena? We hope someone knows more than we do! After an awesome sail to Hog Cay we are in the middle of cooking Pigs In A Blanket for a party when we get an EMERGENCY CALL on the VHF. A local family was out fishing and their daughter cut herself pretty badly after falling on a conch shell. Since we have a huge medical kit onboard we got in touch over the VHF and organized for them to tie up to Delos so we could render care. Just because we are not able to continue sailing around the world, does not mean we cannot keep exploring where we are. Boat life to us, is more than just sailing. We enjoy being anchored away from everyone and everything and enjoying the nature around us. A major reason we love living on Nandji is to live closer to nature and immerse ourselves amongst the elements. It's the little things in life that are the most rewarding. A simple bow shower under the rain makes all the difference. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach in Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony with our 4 kids, just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love Carla and Simon

After leisure holidays in Camamu Bay we sailed back to Salvador de Bahia. We wanted to say Good Bye to this wonderful city we fall in love with. And we wanted to learn how to cook a traditional Brazilian fish stew – MOQUECA MISTA BAIANA. For us it’s a part of exploring countries – to eat good local food and to learn how to cook it. The taste of Brazil is MOQUECA. Сolorful, delicious and sunny like Brazil and brazilian people. Moqueca (pronounced “mo-keh-kah”) is a fish stew native to the northern state of Bahia (now you know why we decided to sail our catamarn straight to Salvador?). It’s made with a base of palm oil and coconut milk, combined with fish, lobster, shrimp or other seafood and vegetables. Moqueca is stewed in traditional clay pots along with vegetables and fresh herbs, and it is traditionally served over rice and pirão. Imagine, how lucky we were, when the marina manager Dominique introduced us to the owner of the famous Cuco Bistro José Iglesias Garcia and the chef João Silva. Comprehensive recepie of Moqueca mista de peixe e camarao in our film from the Umadum line “The cook, the boat and the rolling pot”. Twin shaft diesels, opening helm door and really good looks make this a boat you would be happy to own. As the name suggests she benefits from a solar array on the roof which supports the lithium battery bank and provides constant 240v power when needed or switch over from diesel power to the smooth and quiet electric drives. For more info on this boat, please visit the ad on our website: https://www.theboatbrokerage.com.au/listing/greenline-40-2/

Première occasion de tester les nouveaux équipements de Jade sur temps long et diverses activités de globe-trotteurs à la voile... Bilan général: positif. Ouf. L'histoire en entier sur notre blog! https://labaladedejade.com/entrainement-dete-objectif-bretagne/
This is a short 30 minute Hatha Yoga session to stimulate the shoulders, spine and upper body. You need to wear comfortable clothing, have a yoga mat or a soft floor. You only need one prop - a yoga strap, long scarf, shawl or towel anything that is long and strong enough similar to a yoga strap. Please remember not to push into any of the poses. Gentle, slow movement is more effective and safer. If a pose is inaccessible or painful, stop doing it and choose something else that is more beneficial to your body or rest the pose out lying back. I strongly recommend to have 5-10 minutes full resting pose, shavasana at the end of the session. If you want to use an essential oil, try something that supports the opening and balancing of the throat and heart chakra, which are also balanced and stimulated by this session. I love to use lavender or spearmint on throat, rose or geranium on heart from doTERRA. If you want to purchase them you can find more info on my website heartspace.nz under esential oils. This is a Yin yoga session with focuses on the stimulation of the spine, hips, legs and abs. You need to wear comfortable clothing that you can freely move in, a yoga mat, a yoga bolster or alternatively a rolled up pillow, towel or blanket and a yoga strap or alternatively a fitness strap or long shawl. If you have essential oils at home, choose a calming wood oil if you have, like Vetiver, Frankincense, Myrrh or Cedarwood. I used the doTERRA Frankincense Touch roller for my practice. This practice should be accessible for most bodies, but if anything does feel painful or inaccessible, just wait that pose out or change for a different pose you enjoy. As always if you have questions and suggestions, please e-mail me: silke@heartspace.nz. This is a Hatha yoga session designed to be done just after waking up, while you are still in bed. There is no gear you need at all, just enough space and maybe shuffle blankets and cushions out of the way. Its a great way to start the day by gently moving the body, getting the blood and lymphatic system going, connecting in with your breath and set a positive intention for the day. If you have essential oils at home, choose an uplifting oil, such as citrus, mint or flower oil. I choose the doTERRA Easy Air Touch roller, as it wakes up the respiratory system and gives me a real clear head. This practice should be accessible for most bodies, but if anything does feel painful or inaccessible, just wait that pose out or change for a different pose you enjoy. As always if you have questions and suggestions, please e-mail me: silke@heartspace.nz. This is a Hatha yoga session designed to be done just before sleep in bed. There is no gear you need at all, just enough space and maybe shuffle blankets and cushions out of the way. Its a great way to end the day by gently moving the body, calming the nerveous system, letting go of the day and inviting a relaxed state. I know this works as I got really sleepy, just teaching this ;-). If you have essential oils at home, choose a calming blend. Wood Oils are calming and grounding. Lavender, Magnolia and Vetiver are great support for a restful sleep This practice should be accessible for most bodies, but if anything does feel painful or inaccessible, just wait that pose out or change for a different pose you enjoy. This is a 50 minute Hatha Yoga session to strengthen the abdominal region and the upper arms. I highly recommend to have 5-10 minutes Shavasana, full resting pose at the end of the session. It will be accessible to most bodies. If one or the other pose doesn't feel right for you, just rest it out or find an alternative pose that feels right for you. You just need a mat and comfortable clothing, maybe a cushion and blanket for your resting poses and perhaps a water, so you can keep hydrated. The body responds well to repeating this session regularly to strengthen those areas in your bodies. You can do this session any time during the day, but its more suitable for the morning and during the day. If you do it in the evening, just have a longer rest afterwards with deep belly breaths and maybe legs up the wall to calm the body again. If you are using essential oils in your practice Peppermint oil is one great for mental alertness and to clear brain fog. Its a nice one to combat afternoon slumps or waking up the in the morning. It also beautifully clears and supports the respiratory system and digestive system. You can apply over belly, along the inside of arms, around your neck. Just don't get it in your eyes. Have a few deep inhales before the practice. If you have any other requests for other practices you would like to see online, please let me know silke@heartspace.nz We are the Whittakers. This is a a stronger Yin Yoga practice for 60 minutes with longer held poses that work on the fascia, joint and ligament health. A Yin practice really stretches your body beyond the more vigorous exercise regimes and stimulates places in your body that you usually can't access with a faster yoga flow. I would highly recommend to add 5-10 minutes Shavasana - full resting pose at the end of the session. I am talking you into relaxation and you can stay for as long as it feels right for you. Please remember if any of the poses are not accessible for your body - don't force yourself into them. Just swap the poses out that are not feeling right or have a moments rest. This a good sequence for any time of the day. I personally prefer to practice yin towards the afternoon or evening as it helps me to relax. In a Yin Yoga it is really recommended to support the body with as many props as you need as it helps the body to relax into the longer held poses. For this sequence you can have a yoga bolster or alternatively rolled up towels or blankets, cushions and or yoga blocks. Just see what works for you and what you have around home. For Shavasana you might want to have a cushion for under the head and a blanket to cover yourself with. For more information about Heartspace Yoga you can check out Silke's website www.heartspace.nz.

In the June 15 installment of Sailing World's weekly Zoom show, contributing racing editors review an oldie-but-goodie instructional column penned by a young Ed Baird back in 1981. A keeper race, Baird says then and now, is all about the first 100 yards.
