11th Hour Racing Team pioneer next-gen ocean science equipment ⛵️🌊

11th Hour Racing Team are applying the pioneering spirit of ocean racing to ocean science with the latest generation of scientific equipment onboard called the OceanPack. In this video, navigator Simon Fisher shows us how during a 14-day transatlantic crossing in August, the team used an OceanPack box to sample seawater 24/7 and transmit essential ocean data in real-time, for the first time. This is part of our innovative and pioneering science programme using onboard instrumentation to gather scientific data in some of the most remote places on earth. The crew aboard the IMOCA 60 racing yacht also deployed a Drifter Buoy in a target area where there is a gap in coverage for long-term real-time monitoring of ocean conditions, a particularly valuable contribution given the reduced opportunities to collect data and deploy monitoring equipment during the COVID19 situation.
