Welcome to our very first video! We thought it'd be nice to tell you a little bit about who we are and how we got to this point. And what a trip down memory lane it was to make this video: over the last 6 years we've been to over 20 countries on all sorts of adventures. It starts with how we met and discovered our shared passion for sailing, goes onto us buying our first boat, and then gets into what led us to sell everything, give up our house, and move onto a boat... right before winter near Toronto, Canada. In this segment, Vicki and I spent several fine summer days exploring Isle Royale's beautiful Chippewa Harbor in our dinghy, before we headed Freelance back to Windigo at the southern end of the national park. We were again buddy-boating with our friends Duane and Mar of the MV Inisfree — and we were all careful to limit our contact with other boaters in this plague year of COVID-19. It should be mentioned that we saw normal levels of boat traffic during our time in the impressive national park. Park services were reduced due to the pandemic, but it didn't cause any hardships for us. Cruising boats are intended to be self-sufficient for extended periods of time, so our 2020 Isle Royale experience was quite similar to being off the grid along the North Shore on the Canadian side of Lake Superior..

This week we get to our very own private island, totally secluded, we have it all to ourselves, the sun shining, white sandy beach, crystal clear blue water and our home is just parked 30 meters away - if this is not paradise what is? But getting there wasn't easy. Our depth meter decided not to work making it very hard to know where we could anchor, or where we possibly could hit the bottom (yikes). Kieran has to swim around the boat several times before he manually place our anchor on the seafloor. After three or four goes with Isabelle at the helm, it sets and we are anchored. Last month we pulled into a marina for 3 days to complete an ongoing rigging project to replace all of our stays. While in the marina, we installed all but one - the forestay. It was finally time to install it and the best marina we could do it in was 25 miles north in Carriacou. So we set off for a day sail and immediately got a whooping from some pretty hefty seas and strong winds. In the process of raising our canvas, we tore our staysail - Our first ripped sail of our journey so far and not surprising given its age. Despite the wild weather and ripped sail we had a great journey and put a hook in in Tyrell Bay, Carriacou that afternoon. The next day we inspected the tear after assessing that it was a bit beyond our skills we got it straight to a sailmaker to repair. The next task was the take off our Genoa in preparation for our marina time. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach in Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony with our 4 kids, just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Can you actually compete on a 1990s Old School Board? Let’s find out! It’s time to dust off the channel and kick things off in style. This time, I’m testing out the 1999 Mistral Windsurfing Board and seeing how it can perform in a real competition. I will be comparing it to the current racing gear, having a look at the differences and similarities and seeing what it’s actually like to sail it in some real-life heats.
