Our time in the ICW is nearing a close in Southport, NC. A three day offshore jump to St. Augustine FL will save us weeks winding down the ICW through South Carolina & Georgia. We get underway at 1am from our anchorage right next to the Cape Fear inlet. The first morning we are treated to a gorgeous calm sunrise on the ocean. We reflect on the challenges we have faced heading south this year and are super grateful for such a beautiful calm morning reaffirming why we chose this lifestyle! With that the wind fills in and we start to set sail. We are a bit rusty handling our sails from a prolonged time in the ICW where we predominantly motored. We get our code zero out and we are sailing at or slightly above apparent wind speed. We aim to keep far enough offshore to avoid most boat traffic but not so far out that we wind up in the north flowing Gulf Stream. We are greeted by one of the biggest pods of dolphins we have ever seen. We manage to get a GoPro in the water for some awesome underwater shots of the encounter! Nach und nach wuchs ein Plan und so habe ich es schließlich gemacht. Allerdings wollte Helgoland dieses Mal wirklich „erobert“ werden. Nachts aus dem Europahafen in Bremen raus und nach Bremerhaven, weiter nach Helgoland zu meiner Tochter und schließlich nach Cuxhaven (meinem Sommerliegeplatz). Obwohl ich in diesem „Heimathäfen“ häufig bin und das Revier ganz gut kenne, war es doch eine besondere Fahrt für mich – die Nachtfahrt nach Bremerhaven, bei „'n büschen Wind“ (Nordwest bis 6 Beaufort in Böen 7 Beaufort) aus der Weser raus, rund 12 Stunden bis Helgoland, Reparatur der Schot des Großsegels auf der Nordsee, einhand An- und Ablegen an der Spundwand, unter „Coronabedingungen“ auf Helgoland einreisen, u.v.m. – ich habe es genossen wieder auf dem Wasser zu sein! ⚡SHOCKER⚡ This week on our MacGREGOR refit the name of the game was power!🔋🔌Whether its amps, watts, or horses we made a route to course through our boat and make it more like home.🐢 The solar system was an educational learning curve. We had to figure out how to keep the solar panel connection to our convertor on our moving companion way hatch. But as they say necessity is the mother of invention 🤔 A lot of long nights of head scratching, and of course Youtubing, we made our way back to the 90’s and a good old coil phone style cable. It doesn’t matter how hard you try the 90’s keep coming back. And what’s the 90’s without a rock’n light show! Party on Wayne!🤘 With all that power we need to remember to stay grounded! The rubber teak floor matting really changed the look and feel of the boat. We now have a more cozy, cleaner (biggy on our check list), and great sound dampener🙉 that makes it feel less like being in a Tupperware container. On the flip side, Mr.’s none too happy about the power on our boat. But given the way of the world right now our wants don’t always meet our expectations 😣 Sadly, we can’t get our hands on the 50Hp Yamaha that we want; but next year that is high on the list. However, if we are stuck with a motor for a year, we are pretty happy it’s a Honda. About the Boat ''SY ROYAL ATENEA'' was built in Holland in 1973. Her original name was ''Antares''.She is a Jongert Trewes Design with 5mm Steel Hull and rigged as a Ketch with Aluminium Masts. Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. About the Boat ''SY Red Current'' is a Southerly 31 with the construction of GRP and rigged as a sloop with Aluminium Mast. Her LOA is 31 feet and she has a beam of 10 feet with a draft of 7 feet. She also has an electric swing keel which makes her draft very shallow and easy to enter in shallow water. We officially check out of Cuba and leave Cien Fuegos as early as we can in the morning. Its a long day sail but we fall back on a backup plan when the wind gets on the nose. Eventually we arrive to an excellent snorkeling spot in a place called the Jardines de la Reina - the gardens of the queen. It is all amazing until a barracuda comes and harasses Margarida's bottom. EP 173: Moving to a NEW Anchorage with our NEW Anchor ⚓ We packed up and got all our things ready to move over to our a new anchorage spot (Mount Hartman Bay- here in Grenada) Once settled.. Ricky hopped in to check our anchor holding and saw that we had a bunch of tiny barnacles growing on the hull. To stop it from becoming worse over time he gave it a good ol scrub and Lady Africa hull is free from growth.. we will have to see how long it lasts though 🤣 We explored our little bay by dinghy and then by foot and walked over to the neighboring bay too. It was Christmas time on Lady Africa too because we gifted her we a beautiful new Mantus M1.. (she's so spoiled.. Ricky doesn't buy me gifts 🤪) We were super impressed with this anchor and so glad we did the swap. 🤞 Fingers crossed we can sell our Lewmar Delta.It was really pretty there and definitely will be another stop for us. We then hopped on the dinghy to dive and check the ocean life here. Was definitely one of the best diving spots we have been to as of yet.. One of the most depressing and difficult places to work is the bilge! It is a very tight space and it's dark. Without a head lamp, it would be impossible to see what you are doing. It's also a somewhat wet space as a boat with many holes in its hull has leaks...it always has a leak somewhere. In this episode, we have an issue with a bilge switch, but it also turns out to be an issue with the bilge pump. You will see that we did not do a great job of diagnosing the issue before jumping in to try and fix it. We have since learned from our errors.
