Step up to the Harken Test Bench. Each and every day, the Harken engineers work to push The Front further. The America's Cup is no exception. The workhorse of AC75 mainsail trim is the traveler system -- even moreso than the mainsheet. Constant traveler adjustments were critical with every shift, puff, and lull; a mistake could mean falling off the foils, which, in this Cup cycle often meant losing the race. Harken worked with the teams to develop and test CRX traveler systems. In the run-up to the Cup, teams were rapidly burning through thermoplastic bearings (initially designed to race around the world non-stop). So we pushed forward. Here's the story with engineer Drew Kosmoski.
Sailing in the Bahamas is special!!! Gentle trade winds, and ultra flat seas in the very shallow banks give you the sensation of flying over the bottom of the sea. Turtles, sharks and sting rays swim rapidly under boat escaping from the menacing keel. A truly unforgetable experience!!!
In this video I finally remove the forward deck on the "miss Stella". A 1977 21' repco lobster boat. Removing the floor or DECK of your boat can be nerve-racking. The fiberglass was only one layer thankfully. Everything was water logged and I imagine I removed about 80-100 pounds of weight. The stringers look good, and the hull is in excellent shape. Next comes templating the cabin and wheelhouse. If you've ever wondered how to remove the deck off your boat to replace it, this is the video for you! About a year ago, when we were all suddenly locked down and communicating online, I did a review of the Rode NT USB Mini microphone and how it can improve the audio of your podcasts, live streams and Zoom calls. I’ll put a link in the description. This new Rode Connect set up is a game changer for people like me who need to travel to remote expeditionary environments and conduct interviews with explorers, filmmakers and other adventurers. No need to pack a separate audio field mixer or other recording gear - Now, with the NT USB Mini and the FREE Rode Connect software, you can record remote professional-level audio using the laptop you already have in your back pack. The first step is to download the software - there is a link in the description. Then, connect your NT USB mini into your computer, and also connect your headphones to the port at the back of the mic. When you connect your mic, you may get a prompt to update the firmware on your NT USB mini - go ahead and do that. Now you are ready to record. Click and drag the NT USB mini icon onto an open channel. If you are using more than one mic, do the same for all the other mics too. You can connect up to 4 NT USB mini mics to your computer without any complicated wiring or additional audio software. As an added feature, Rode is now offering a set of color-coded mic and cable covers so you can assign the mics to the corresponding color on the Rode Connect software. This eliminates the need to figure out which person is on which channel - a nice touch when there are several people on your podcast, especially out in the field. Next, you’ll want to click on each microphone to activate them, and drag the mic icons to the channel where you want to assign them. Before you begin recording, you will want to set the levels of the mics - this is as easy as clicking on the channel number and increasing or decreasing the gain until you have the green meter levels at about 75% - leaving a bit of room for louder sounds like laughter or very dynamic interviews. You may notice when you click on the channel number that a series of audio effects is also displayed. This is what really sets the Rode Connect software apart - the ability to modify the sound of each mic based on the person’s speaking voice. Before this you’d have to have additional hardware like a professional audio mixer to add effects to each channel. We have a Rodecaster Pro mixer in our production studio for when we are recording podcasts and documentary narration, but having almost the same capabilities while on an expedition is just amazing. On each channel, you can choose a noise gate, compressor, aural exciter and big bottom effect. The noise gate reduces background noise when not speaking into the mic. The compressor, processes the loudest and softest parts of speech, adjusting it to a nice, clear, even sounding level. The aural exciter gives the higher tones a crisp, clean sound, and the big bottom adds that nice, bass-y radio broadcasting sound. By default, these effects are all turned on but on some channels you may need only one or two of these effects to get the best sound. Take a few minutes before recording to get everyone's voice sounding as good as possible. You may notice there are two additional channels - System and Virtual. These are for adding additional audio sources to your podcast - things like intro music, pre-recorded segments, or remote phone calls. I’m not going to get into them here because I’m focusing on recording in-person interviews and podcasts in the field - but I’ll post a link to the Rode video where they explain this in detail. The last thing you want to do before beginning your recording is to select whether you want your output to be a stereo mix or a multi-track - using the drop down preference menu on the right of the Rode Connect window. If you are going to use the recording as it is, then stereo mix is your best bet. If you are going to apply a lot of additional mixing and post processing using a digital audio work station, then choose multi track. For most podcasting users the stereo mix is more than adequate. So, now you are ready to record - just hit the big red button and make some expedition podcast magic.

Hi Guys As you know I recently bought a new narrowboat. I had it surveyed and there were a few issues found. In this video I discuss the findings at the plan to resolve. There's quite a list! Hope you enjoy! Kayleigh I'm Kayleigh and along with my two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So we decided to purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside the boat, we made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. Subscribe and welcome aboard - follow us on our narrowboat journey, where I will show what its really like living and navigating the English waterways as a solo female. Tikehau, South Seas beaches as you would imagine them! A real dream. After leaving Rangiroa last week after a wonderful time, it is time for a short stopover on the neighbouring atoll of Tikehau. Known for its countless manta rays, which we unfortunately did not find. We had planned a 3-day stop, but the wind forecast changes and we are stuck here for over a week. Is that bad? No, of course not! We use the time for extensive days on the small islands and enjoy the sweet idleness, as we want to make our way to Tahiti shortly and thus leave the Tuamotus archipelago after 6 months... This is the third video in the Building a Balance 482 Catamaran series. Here you will follow the build of the first Balance 482 Catamaran from tooling to launch and sea trials of hull #1. This video shows production progress on the hull and the deck plug as well as fuel and water tank construction, and daggerboard and rudder construction. For those who have not watched the earlier videos in the series, it is worth explaining that the hull mold is constructed using thousands of CNC-cut shutter ply frames and meranti stringers. This framework is then cladded with weather-proof ply and faired until smooth. The same process is then applied to the deck plug, from which the deck mold is manufactured using E-Glass and resins with structural reinforcement behind it. The Balance 482 hull is laminated in one piece without the need for additional joining laminates and tabbing, which helps to save weight. The structural PVC foam core material is thermo formed and vacuum bagged to assist with further weight savings and to provide structural integrity to this performance sailing catamaran. Furthermore, all bulkheads are properly tabbed in and we use carbon fibre in high-load areas for extra stiffness and strength. #balancecatamarans #catamaran #sailingcatamaran #catamaransailing #boatbuilding #catamaranconstruction #dutoityachtdesign

This week we set sail to Bastimentos and Red frog, we heard there would be some nice hikes in the jungle and decide to sail there with our friends. Little easier said then done, we were unable to pick up our anchor. The chain had rapped around an old engine block left on the sea floor. Kieran had to dive down and slowly worked us free from the chaos. Some hours later we were off! Later that afternoon we walk barefoot into the jungle with our Scandinavian friends. We discovered a waterfall and finally saw the red little frogs that the place was named after. Join our crew! We are looking for new crew to join in the future journey. Thank you very much, you guys are amazing supporting us with your likes and comments, we really feel that we have a new family out there. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love
Best Sailing in the Bahamas on our Seawind 1600 Catamaran - Bimini to Exumas | Harbors Unknown Ep 28
Our sailing grounds this week on our Seawind 1600 catamaran are the beautiful waters of the Bahamas between Bimini and the Exumas. We sail from Gun Cay just south of Bimini to Chub Cay, then Chub to West Bay on New Providence Island, West Bay to Shroud Cay and Shroud to Cambridge Cay. It’s a great passage route with day sails to get down to a stunning part of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park. If you like this video give it a thumbs up, leave us a comment down below, share it with a friend and be sure to subscribe. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you next week! If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our #Seawind1600 #catamaran, Wanderlust, in September. We plan to sail her to Harbors Unknown, and explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We share the adventures of #boatlife and how it’s possible to live an #alternativelifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. Until we officially begin our world voyage, we’re exploring the beautiful waters of #SouthFlorida and the Florida Keys. Subscribe now to join our #sailingadventure. This is an old Story that has been Re Edited due to Copyright restrictions. Wow, wow, wow... can it get any better than this? We're not sure. We go deeper in to Montenegro, explore the ancient town of Kotor and are in awe of this entire region. To our fellow cruising friends ... this place is a must. Original view count 3445.
Do you know your wetpreg from your prepreg? What is the difference between the two anyway? Just a little protip from youngbarnacles. If you are curious as to what Shayne is making stay tuned. This is the extra carbon patching for the forestay fitting arrangement he has designed. It's a neat solution to address the problem of attaching a wire toggle forestay to our carbon longeron with the option to swap out the wire for composite rigging at a later stage. We really like the solution so keep an eye out for our video about it! Join us on our sailing journey from Europe back to the Pacific.
With trade winds blowing south east every day, it is rare that when heading south east, you can sail downwind. But it happened! We had the perfect weather, with clocking winds that would give us a chance to sail downwind even while sailing around the Berry Islands. We'll let you find out how it worked out! We pick up my mom in Nassau and make our way down to the Exumas. The scenery is breathtaking, and everything that we'd heard it would be! What a dream come true to be doing this, we hope you enjoy coming along for the ride!
