How do you get your sailboat ready for a day trip? We, and a group of friends, take off on a quick day trip to Koh Yao Yai in Phuket Thailand. We prepare the boat prior to leaving, check everything and raise the anchor to set off for the day. Good group of people for this weeks adventure. We are joined by Dean and Macus from Seychelles. Both just did an Indian Ocean crossing on a Bali 4.3 and then had to quarantine in Phuket for 14 days. Dean is a delivery captain with over 2 decades of sailing experience. It was a pleasure to have him aboard to teach us and to pick his brain. Macus was his engineer on the delivery crossing. It was his first major delivery and his first delivery was across the Indian Ocean! Kyle is from South Africa and is learning just like we are. He got stuck in Phuket during Covid and was originally here for marine training in the yachting industry. Finally Yen joins us, rather we join him on his newly purchased Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46. Yen, while also a noobie to sailing, has had the opportunity to get his boat out on the water and gain some experience sailing since purchasing it. Koh Yao Yai are 3 rock formations just off the island between the world famous Phi Phi islands and Phuket. While one formation is only a few meters tall, the other two go straight up out of the water and have a lot of green on them to create a stunning setting. Yen gets some stunning aerial views with the drone as I struggled to keep reception with mine and have problems landing it back on the boat for the first time. BTW, if you catch a drone, turn it upside down, it will automatically turn itself off....thanks Yen! Probably the single best thing about entering our sailing life has been all the new people we have meet. It is also very nice to have such a huge diversity of cultures. Learning the world is not only about going places and seeing them for yourself, but also talking to the people that are from there. Work continues on our rusty sailing yacht as we prepare and paint the inside of the transom. We've removed the whole of the inner transom skin now and have cut out and welded in a large section of replacement steel so now its time to prepare the surface of the inside of the transom and paint it ready for rebuilding the cockpit seats. Me and Wendy have been sailing together, but she gets seasick. So I do all of the sailing solo and she stays down below deck. We head up north the coast of Santiago to Tarrafal. The wind is in my face so I zigzag close to short to stay away from swell and waves. In Tarrafal we hang out with local surfers. And the next day we go all the way back to Praia by taxi to fetch our boat documents from the Maritime Police. That night we set sail for Mindelo. The passage is hard on all of us. Upwind against waves and current. It gets strongest as the day progresses. I push with the engine, and then it cuts out. I'm screwed. This episode we park our boat in the marina and take a week off from sailing around the Sea of Cortez to go inland and explore the sights and sounds of Mexico City. A few weeks back we met new friends while sailing some beautiful anchorages north of La Paz and they extended a very warm invitation to joint their family in Mexico City for a week of inland exploration. Of course we jumped at the opportunity to go see this legendary city, and soon found that our hosts had planned far more than just city sight seeing. We started off by heading out of the city to a popular small mountain town called Tepoztlan- a fantastic quaint little town surrounded by steep old granite hills. After a few fantastic days there, our next stop took us to a very picturesque town called Taxco that felt more like the Greek towns of the Mediterranean than it did Mexico. It was one of the most beautiful towns we have seen in all of our Central American travels. Follow along to get a feel for some of the greater spots in and around Mexico City. Pour ça, on a entièrement refait l'installation électrique, nouvelles batteries et installation de panneaux solaires.
