There's bad weather off La Rochelle the starting point for the 90 boat fleet of the Class Mini, 6.5 Meter, 20 Foot) crazy, fantastic racing yachts. Yes NINETY sailors are setting out once again to battle the Atlantic Ocean and all it can throw at them, all in the name of pushing the boundaries of the sport of Sailing. Travelling in the wake of many French super-sailors before them, these 90 are looking at having a "bumpy" start as the weather is, to say the least, "Lousy." If you were one of the rookie, first timers, how would you feel waiting out these 24 hours before tomorrow's start. I don't know about you but my feelings were always to get going and deal with what "hewie" throws at you. At least you know that you're going and sailing. With two tropical cyclones spinning up within a week it's time for us get moving out of the hurricane zone. The only problem is that we have put ourselves a bit into a corner here in Mexico. We need to fight our way a few hundred miles east against persistently strong easterly trade winds before we can turn south and onto heading for Panama. Just because we are waiting for weather doesn't mean we can't have fun! We decide to check out the underwater world taking our dinghy to a submerged sculpture park with eerie statues. Eventually we start to see a hole in the trades allowing us to escape Mexico and hurricane season. We move into passage prep mode, getting Calico Skies ready for sea. In addition to the usual prep work we also throw in one more curve ball, Grace had decided to sit this passage out and we are picking up crew. This decision wasn't made lightly but after a few rough passages this winter and the fact that we have to transit a know pirate coast we decide it'd be best for Grace to sit this one out and fly down to Panama to meet Calico. The wind plays in our favor and we feel we can fly. We continue sailing through Menorca and leave the Illa d'en Colom. We continue our journey to Port de Mahó, the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean where we find a suitable shelter to protect us from the approaching bad weather. Finally we explore Cala Macarella, a beautiful turquoise beach in the south of Menorca, where Noemí will take the opportunity to get on her Paddle Surf board and enjoy the beauty of the landscape from another point of view. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- En una pequeña excursión a la Cala Tamarells subimos hasta la Torre de Rambla, un fortín históricamente construido para defensa costera. This week we went sailing with some friends. It was just what the doctor ordered. They have an impeccable, charming Morgan 41...a well-designed, cross-purpose boat. It looks classic, has the heart of a racer and the sturdiness of a cruiser. Take a quick peek inside! We feasted on roti and homemade bread. We sang, we played games, and Catamaran Cocktails recreated a Nigerian drink called "The Chapman"...a non-alcoholic (well, almost) mix that Micheil recalls from his childhood. It's ALMOST non-alcoholic, because it has Angostura bitters, which yes- does contain alcohol, but it's so diluted in the drink that it wouldn't much matter, its really only for flavor. Angostura Aromatic Bitters comes from Trinidad and Tobago and is made with extracts of grasses, roots, leaves and fruits. It is great for balancing drinks but it also works in cooking and can facilitate digestion and much more.
