Have you ever spent what seems like days measuring drops of mekp or catalyst for your polyester resin? We have all done it in a pinch, but there's a quicker way. In this video I show you how to use some basic math to accurately measure the correct amount of MEKP for your polyester products. We all have a phone with a calculator so that makes this process even easier. This works on every single polyester product, not just the amazing products at totalboat. Here is the formula written out, remember products OTHER than resin require almost double the amount of MEKP to catalyze gelcoat, repair putty or fairing compound, for all your boat repairs or boat builds. When the AGM batteries fail on our Southerly 480 sailboat following months of lockdown in Panama, we take the opportunity to replace them with lithium batteries before selling the boat. #117 Il va falloir panser les bobos en prenant bien soin avant, de démonter tout ce qui doit l’être. Tout débute par les bagues de safran qui doivent être ajustées et la timonerie qu’il faut réadapter. Nous avons trouvé un tourneur qui peut s’occuper des modifications que Cyril veut y apporter. Après, hormis nos gouvernails, le reste est de l’entretien. Remplacement de l’huile des sails drive, nettoyage de la coque ou encore dérouillage de la nacelle. C’est une imperfection de Black lion ! Figurez-vous qu’il nous fait des tâches de rousseurs ! Rien de grave en soit, juste des centaines de points de rouille qui apparaissent hors flottaison depuis toujours. La cause, un solvant sous-couche mal adapté à la peinture. 10 septembre, notre lion pose au milieu de chantier Peake. Tout s’est passé très vite ! En fait je ne comprends pas bien. Je me retrouve là, habillée en bonhomme Lustucru, sans ma moitié, allongée sur un lit d’hôpital, un cathéter dans la main gauche ! Plus tôt dans la matinée, motivée avec mon capitaine à trouver toutes les pièces nécessaires à Black Lion pour son carénage, nous glanions les shipchandlers, quand un appel téléphonique nous a complètement bouleversés ! C’était le chantier. Nous devions rappeler d’urgence le médecin que j’étais allée voir deux jours plus tôt pour connaitre la cause de ma grande fatigue, de mes douleurs dans la jambe gauche et de mes palpitations persistantes depuis plus d’un mois. Le genre de coup de fil vraiment pas rassurant et franchement angoissant ! Nous devions cette frayeur, à mon taux d’hémoglobines extrêmement faible, 6 au lieu de 12. Je devais me faire transfuser d’urgence ! Et me voici, là, au milieu des brancards et des médecins à essayer de comprendre en anglais, mon problème, pendant que mon tendre Amour se retrouve seul, sans moyen de me contacter, l’angoisse au ventre. Tiraillé d’inquiétude, il ne lui restait plus qu’à s’acharner au travail pour se changer les idées et c’est ce qu’il a fait. Son idée, remettre au plus vite Blacky à l’eau et pour ça, il n’avait d’autre choix que de s’attaquer au plus vite à la réparation du safran. Son entreprise réfléchie, il a d’abord commencé par découper des carrés dans la pelle pour atteindre les fourches qui s’assemblent à la mèche de safran. De là, il a fait ressouder les pièces, et s’est afféré à nettoyer et combler les ouvertures de mousse expansive. Pendant ce temps, je ruminais sur mon lit d’hôpital ! Mon souci semblait dater de quelques mois, un trouble continu d’un complexe vasculaire mal placé laissant échapper mon fluide corporel. Résultat, anémie et oxygénation diminuée ! Jusqu’à là, me dis-je, rien d’alarmant. Une petite injection et je m’imaginais retourner au bateau le soir même. Belle déduction que je me voyais mettre en application, sauf que manque de bol, les petites varices sanguines de mon popotin n’ont pas du tout vu la suite de la même façon ! Est-ce l’introduction du sang que mon corps n’a pas bien accepté, la médication antihémorragique, ou les deux, n’empêche qu’en moins de deux heures, je me retrouvais complètement avachie, avec des douleurs atroces et une dose de morphine pour calmer tout ça ! Conséquence, une thrombose avérée, deux poches de sang, une poche de fer, quatre jours d’hospitalisation sans voir mon Tchoupi, cause au Covid, et un délestage de deux mille cinq cent euros ! Entre temps, mon doux et tendre, sans y avoir été préparé, se retrouvé contraint de se faire à manger et surtout submergé ! Ce qui ne l’a pas empêché d’abattre un boulot de dingue. À mon retour, après quatorze étapes techniques, les safrans étaient refaits à neuf, mais mon état de santé n’était guère enthousiasmant ! En nous rappelant qu’en ayant souscrit à une carte Visa Premier, nous étions assurés en cas de soucis de santé à l’étranger, nous nous retrouvions sur recommandation du médecin Europe Assistance, complètement désemparés ! Je devais absolument me refaire transfuser. S’engage alors les procédures. Sachez cependant, chose que nous ne savions pas, certainement parce qu’on ne lit pas assez assidument les contrats, qu’avant même le moindre soin, l’assurance doit être prévenue. « Coup de chance », elle sera conciliante sur ce point. Mais la situation se complique, les médecins sur Trinidad sont formels, il n’y a plus de sang pour moi ici et ceux de Paris ne veulent pas que je retourne en Martinique par voie maritime, soulevant le risque d’un malaise ou d’une perte de connaissance en pleine mer. Je dois être évasanée en avion. Et les avions à destination des départements français, avec la pandémie, il n’y en a pas ! Nous sommes perdus, mais on nous rassure, nous assure que tout va bien se passer et que nous sommes pris en charge. Je prépare à la va-vite un sac. Cyril se tient prêt à agir. It's our first Gulf Stream crossing and to say we are a bit nervous is an understatement. It’s also our longest crossing. We were a bit more relaxed when we thought Jeff was crossing with us as he has crossing experience, but then he was gone…home. And, it was just the two of us. While that is a lovely song, it’s not lovely when it has to do with two inexperienced sailors getting ready to make a major journey. This crossing has occupied brain space in our waking hours as well as visited us in our worst nightmares. We hear people describe a bad day in the gulf stream as elephants on the horizon. We are heeding every warning by fellow sailors to pick a good weather window and hired Chris Parker to lead us with a forecast and departure nod. Our satellite is connected, the boat is prepped. It is time to go. The good news is that we have 10 fellow cruisers leaving about the same time and heading to the same destination. We have set our 3 on, 3 off helm schedule and have prepared meals cooling in the fridge. We left West End at 6 am with a successful anchor lift; this was a bit sketchy as we were not sure the anchor would release itself from between the coral, but it did. And, we were off. The seas are calm and there is no wind. We prefer this extreme to too much wind. Our friends on s/v Invia pass us, but we travel with a caravan of slow catamarans for 3.5 days. The only rough part of the trip was the final night when the winds kicked up and the swell hit us on the beam at short intervals. At one point we had 35 knots on the jib which we tried to furl, but it was a bit of a disaster…at least we did not lose any rigging. We released the sheets which wound up like a huge ball of twine awaiting the pounce of a giant celestial kitty. When we pulled into Taylor’s Creek, we could not have been more excited, but nothing compares to the moment when the engines were turned off and the boat was at rest. We had successfully navigated the gulf stream and our longest journey yet. We only dreamed of setting foot on US soil and talked about it nonstop for the past 10 months, never really believing it would happen. But, it did. We made it and within 20 minutes had our first cheerleader on board, Jess Washburn who showered us with amazing gifts from the local market. We will never forget what he and Susannah did for us – spoiled rotten. Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. After 30 knot winds prevented any racing on day one of the 44Cup World Championship in Scarlino, Italy, the race committee pulled out all the stops to ensure racing took place today, by bringing the start time forwards by two hours. Racing at the 11th 44Cup Scarlino World Championship was finally able to get underway just after 1000 this morning. Three races were successfully held in the bay off Marina di Scarlino in a northerly that built to 20 knots gusting 25. Partly due to the difficult-to-read conditions, partly due to the intense competition between the nine boats, it was a high scoring opening to the World Championship. But most incredibly after three races, and with a potential 27 points on the table today, just one point separates the top seven boats and two points the top eight in the nine boat fleet.
