Welcome to episode 45 of Carpe Diem Sailing. In this episode I discuss harnesses (inc PFD integrated), tethers and jacklines. I go over rigging a jackline and GENERAL principles to be considered when clipping in (or deciding not to clip in...) at sea. Tethers come in many various configurations inc. a short 3' tether, a longer 6' tether and dual tethers that allow you to leap frog and choose between a long and short tether. WARNING! A point of caution however, there is no guarantee that a tether EVEN A SHORT ONE will completely stop you from going over the side in all circumstances and one has to practice safe and prudent movement on the boat, a topic I talk about and emphasize in this video. While waiting for hip surgery, my friends Lily from Cape Verde Africa and Peter The Canadian came to visit for the weekend. I took them to two of the most wonderful sights in Switzerland. I find myself in Martinique in times times of unsettlement. I continue playing and doing boat preparation. We start a new chapter of adventures but this time it's on a new boat. We have officially moved aboard our new 2015 Fountaine Pajot Helia sailing catamaran and begin the process of handing over the baton to the new owners of Evolias. A lot of emotions are thrown at us in a short period, but we have done so much in such a short time that we put our heads down before we let our emotions get the best of us. In a matter of one month, we sold our land home back in Denver, Colorado, bought a new boat and now sold our first boat. Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, New York’s Huguenot Yacht Club held its annual Turkey Day Reach, the last big boat race on western LIS. Being on the shoulder season, some Turkey Day Reaches see sailors in shirt sleeves or light jackets while others make it obvious that December is just a few days away. This year’s was the later. Forecasts for Saturday called for the unpleasant combination of low temperatures and strong winds. And this time the weather models were right. The temperature was 42 degrees and the wind blew steadily in the low 20s with gusts into the 30s. The weather kept many likely sailors home by a warm fire reading the newspaper or watching football. For the few of us who were prepared to race, we will have great memories of meeting the challenge of sailing under control in high winds. A lot of people made good decisions that day. The ones who stayed home knew that either their boats or crews were not up to the conditions; some left the dock only to decide not to race once they felt the strong wind and biting cold at the racing area. The race committee wisely set a reaching-only course that had no tacking or gybing AND they set the course under the north shore of the Sound, which kept the boats out of the heaviest seas and biggest winds. The two boats that finished the race were sailed by the most experienced skippers and crews who reveled in the big blow. Artie Buhr’s Jeanneau 409 TIME OUT was first and my custom 40 SOULMATES corrected to second. As a boat owner, I use the late November race as a reason to keep my boat commissioned for an extra six weeks after the normal close of the racing season. Late fall sailing offers crisp, clear days with great breezes and uncrowded water ways, which is perfect for memorable, day sails.

We enjoy sailing the Exumas and finally get all of the swimming and sunshine we have dreamed of over the past few months. We Travel from New York State to California to look at some blue water sailboats. Specifically We take a gander at a few Pretorien 35's our favorite choice for the circumnavigation adventure. The boat buying process can be stressful but it also can be another fun excuse to do some far off traveling. Its vital to look at sailboats before you buy them but its also important not blow the budget that you have saved up! I will be soon be releasing a long version of the road trip for those that are interested for free on Patreon. I cut down 4 hours of beautiful shots into 7 min for this episode. Most cabin tops have a plywood or foam core. Today I the repair port-light leaks in a way that prevents water from port-light leaks from being able to enter the plywood core. Hopefully this is a permanent repair to a very common sailboat problem. Removing the plywood surrounding the port-light and replacing it with a solid fiberglass core, so all hardware will be going through the fiberglass instead of the plywood as it originally did, I'm no longer relying on the bedding around the port-light to prevent water intrusion.
