Join us as we begin sailing passage preparations for us and the boat to tackle our first offshore passage sailing across the Bay of Biscay! We sail back from the Isles of Scilly departing in lively conditions with quite a chop initially as we pass round the top of the islands and then avoid a cruise ship in a traffic separation zone. We then spend a few weeks in Falmouth preparing the boat for the upcoming voyage sailing across the mighty bay of Biscay to Spain. To prepare for our passage Iain single handedly docks the boat in a marina and climbs the mast to check the rigging, fits man over board AIS to our life jackets along with our personal locator beacons, fit bilge high water alarms and crash pumps, check and pack the grab bag. We practice heaving too and hanking on our stay sail to prepare for our passage and then we scrub the waterline and then shelter up the river Fal from storm Evert. We spend the night on anchor watch due to 45kt winds and are nearly hit when a nearby boat drags anchor and hear the RNLI deployed to boats lower down the river!

Initially I was just going to motor it from the slipway to the pontoon, but couldn't resist a short sail! In the event I couldn't get the outboard to restart so sailed onto the pontoon. Fortunately the mainsail came down easily - the first time I had ever lowered it! We slowly sail our way up to Cairns. We reject the Russell Island anchorage because it is just too rolly and continue north to a safer one at Normanby Island. Magnus lands a shark and we decide to keep it to see what it’s like, so fish and chips for dinner… yum! We end up at Fitzroy Island and embark on the summit walk which turns out to be massive and incredibly steep! Then it’s back to sailing and our trip up to Cairns. The ability to change our backyard is something we absolutely love about the cruising life. In the still heat of the morning we wake up to the paradise that is our new backyard. The conditions are perfect so we decide water sports are in order and the entire crew hits the water for a wakeboard session. Things take a sad turn when it’s time for JaeCee to fly home, but it ends in laughter when she has an un-forseen encounter at the airport…. Nach einer schönen Zeit an der Küste Andalusiens sage ich dem Mittelmeer ,,Auf Wiedersehen". Ich laufe La Linea an und mache am Fuß des berühmten Felsens Gibraltar meine Leinen fest, was für mich ein persönliches Highlight ist. Ich nutze natürlich die Gelegenheit, mir Gibraltar anzuschauen. Hinauf geht es mit der Seilbahn zur Spitze des Felsens, wo die Affen sind. Danach fahre ich mit dem Fahrrad einmal um Gibraltar herum und filme die beindruckende Kulisse. Weiter segle ich Richtung Rio Guadiana. Das Gebiet, in dem derzeit die Orcas gemeldet sind, durchfahre ich am Rand und kann eine Begegnung vermeiden. Nach rauer Überfahrt mache ich meine Leinen in Ayamonte am Rio Guadiana fest. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Olympic Yacht Show 2021 - The Movie Enthusiasm is the word that best describes the way the people of the sea welcomed the 1st Olympic Yacht Show, which set the stage for Greece to finally boast a Yacht Show that meets the standards of international shows. For five days the beautiful premises of Olympic Marine in Lavrio became a meeting point for the friends of sea tourism and yachting. The Show welcomed more than 15,000 visitors and everyone expressed the hope that the event gains the status of an institution. A five-day-long celebration of yachting was held near the temple of Poseidon, the God of the Sea. We start this week's "Sailing World on Water", with a "Master-Class" of spinnaker sailing by Sean Langman, of the Noakes Racing Team. It's a "Much-watch" for any budding sailor. This is the Sailing World on Water, December Three, 2021. Here are our highlights in the sport of Sailing, globally, in the last seven days. We start with how the team of Frank Cammas and Charles Caudrelier, sailed their ULTIM, into first place in the Transat Jacques Vabre. It's and interesting video on how they handled the huge Trimaran in a range of conditions. They had big seas and strong winds offshore for the Premier Divisions contesting Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s annual, Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship, put the stress test on crews over the 24 nautical mile course, described as “brutal” by a division 1 winning tactician. Michael Fountain from Gerry Hatton’s corrected time winner, Bushranger, said: “brutal is the only way to describe it….very tough conditions with constant 27 knot southerlies gusting to 33 and seas to 4 metres.” The 11th edition of Sailing Arabia – The Tour, Oman’s premier offshore race, returned this week with teams representing Oman and Europe, racing at four venues along the nation’s coastline in a combination of coastal raids, and in-port races. Erik Maris likes to race fast… on the water and off. In addition to his long, successful history in grand prix sailing, he is also an endurance motor racer. Big offshore gusts and sunny skies delivered a barnstorming conclusion to the 2021 KiteFoil World Series Fuerteventura. Max Maeder of Singapore came out on top in a thrilling duel with Axel Mazella from France. Poema Newland of France dominated the women’s division, winning the trophy ahead of Great Britain’s Ellie Aldridge. The defending champion Tech2 team was back to its best form on Sydney Harbour last weekend when the crew of Jack Macartney, Lewis Brake and Luke Parkinson produced a come-from-behind performance to take an exciting victory in Race 2 of the 2021-22, New South Wales, 18ft Skiff Championship. In a race which saw the lead change several times throughout the long Southerly course, Tech2 crossed the finish line ahead of last Sunday's Race 1 winner, Noakesailing, (Sean Langman, Ed Powys and Josh Porebski).
