Why NOT to buy a RACE BOAT for a CRUISING HOME... A lot of people are curious as to why we chose a race boat for a family cruiser. They've been asking us things like what it’s like to sail, whether we can manage it just the two of us, how she behaves on a passage, what the costs are like. Harken reliability you expect for less than you might expect. It’s one of the best things about sailors: we hate to give up on our equipment. But if you’re like a lot of owners of boats with vintage integral hydraulic backstay units, you’ve been putting up with seepage and slippage for too long. We’ve introduced our new integral hydraulic unit to convince you it’s finally time to pull the pins on that leaker and start anew. Unlike some competitive units, you’ll notice the Harken Single-Acting Integral Backstay Adjuster has no external hydraulic hoses to snag docklines or lazy sheets and come loose. As you pump the handle, the single-acting pump pushes fluid through a hole gun-drilled inside the stainless rod, to top of the cylinder, creating pressure and backstay tension. A simple pressure-release knob releases that pressure, reducing mast bend. All the fluid stays inside the tube all of the time. The new Harken Integral is designed to be bulletproof and need no nursing for years. That pressure-release knob cannot be over-tightened. Turn it clockwise to close, counterclockwise to open. In this video we answer the question of "Why do I need a handheld VHF when I already have a cell phone?" There are so many offerings on the market, that we have to narrow things down a bit, so we’ll be looking specifically at an iPhone 8 vs. an ICOM M94D and features that are useful on a sailing vessel, or any boat for that matter. To that end we compare marine-related features of the iPhone (8 and later) and ICOM M94D, including waterproofness, flotation, battery life, charging, range, voice call, weather reports, GPS, downloadable apps, chart plotter, one-button distress, one-button MOB, AIS display, and AIS click-to-call target. A key difference between cell phones and VHF is the cell phone dependency on land-based towers. As long as you’re within range of one of these towers an iPhone is a reasonable device to rely upon, but once you’re out of cell phone range, which is pretty easy around here, the tides change considerable, and the iPhone becomes little more than a chart plotter. You can literally have two boats right beside each other in the middle of the ocean, and they won’t be able to call each other. On the other hand, the VHF will work just fine, because it uses direct transmissions and does not rely on land-based cell phone towers. Our Feb 2022 sail from Cape Town to Walvis Bay aboard a Maxim 380 catamaran. Started at Royal Cape Yacht club and arrived at the very hospitable Walvis Bay Yacht Club.

Anfang Februar sind wir für ein paar Tage in die Heimat geflogen sind. Ämtergänge standen an. Eine Formalie, dachten wir. Aber da hatten wir die Ausländerbehörde in Arzums Heimatstadt in NRW unterschätzt. Aber das ist eine ganz andere Geschichte. Eine sehr, sehr lange dazu. Neben Celle, Hamburg, Hannover und Gummersbach freuten wir uns besonders auf einen Besuch bei meinem alten Freund Sven Kraja in Schleswig. Sven kenne ich vom Strandsegeln. Und vor drei Jahren habe ich in seiner Segelmacherei Frog Sails eine Art Praktikum absolviert und zugeschaut, wie er die Segel für die Dilly-Dally gefertigt hat. Für unsere geplante lange Seereise hat Sven dieses Mal eine Menge wertvolle und ausführliche Tipps auf Lager (und auch einige Materialien), für den Fall des Falles, dass auf See die Segel Schaden nehmen, die Gurte reißen oder sich Nähte lösen. Vi nyder de galiciske bugter, møder delfinen i Muros, siger goddag, farvel og på gensyn til nye venner. Vi falder over fantastisk “mudderkaffe” og portugisiske Nata😉 Lige nord for Porto bliver vi lidt tid og får fixet lidt slør i styringen hos et fiskekutter-værksted. Lidt for spændende! ….og endelig endnu en gang tak til Anton og Carl fra Celeste fordi I gad at stå tidligt op og tage de fede droneshots af os på vej ud af Vigo bugten. Godt gået drenge😊

I have a 2nd hand 48V scooter battery that's perfect for my outboard motor. Not only will it extend my cruising time, but it's more compact and can be put in the front of the boat for better stability. The harness i'm making today is to just test it out next time we go sailing. I also get some new metal grinding bits that make short work of reducing the diamter of my back rudder'spintle so it should now slide properly into the existing points on the transom of the dinghy.
