In this video, our Glomex splitter has finally arrived and we test to see what difference that makes to our AIS visibility. We went for the RA201 which allows you to connect the AIS, FM radio and VHF to a single antenna. AIS is running on the Raspberry Pi using the SDR application in OpenPlotter. Just to confirm, the £30 I mentioned in this video is for the AIS receiver, the Glomex unit was approximately £65 when I placed the order (Winter 2022). We changed slips and escaped briefly to motor in the Atlantic. Spruced up the boat by cleaning the deck and provided some protection in the new floating dock slip by attaching carpet to the cement pilings before moving. We're getting much closer to the end though! In this week's episode, we've already bonded our foam core to the backs, andMatt trims all the halves down to the proper size. The interiors of the cases get a coat of epoxy based primer, and then, the halves are ready to go together!! Although there will be a BIG glassing coming up soon, just to lightly bond the halves together in preparation, we glass the sides together with our 1208 fiberglass, and then bond on the foam core to those as well. For a little bit of fun, we participate in Kentmorr Marina's first annual Blessing of the Fleet. Because the marina is made up mostly of charter boats, and priest has come here to bless each boat and their crew as they head out in a precession to the Chesapeake Bay. Local fire boats are creating a bridge of water to pass under - and it was quite the experience! #151 26 mars, nous sommes dans l’intimité des Exumas, là où, cayes et îlots se mêlent en kyrielle pour nous offrir des abris à foison. Chaque anse, chaque plage, chaque rocher pourrait être le mobile d’un arrêt, mais il faut choisir ! Alors pour en faire un maximum, on va jusqu’à, en faire trois par jour en slalomant parfois, dans 10 centimètres d’eau sous les quilles de Blacky. Les couleurs du plan de navigation sont juste dingues ! Je crois qu’il faudrait inventer des adjectifs uniquement pour ces îles du bout du monde ! Mais l’eau n’est pas la seule à avoir ce privilège des nuances, ici, même les animaux se font remarquer par leur teinte. Déambulant sur le sable chaud de Leaf Island, d’étranges lézards fond parade de leur belle robe rose ! Il s’agit, des iguanes rose des Bahamas ! Trapus, le corps recouvert d’écailles, ils paressent avec indifférence au soleil… Cette faune exceptionnelle a suscité l’intérêt de chercheurs, qui dans le cadre de l’institut John Perry, à Stoking Island, ont mené des programmes de conservation, d’éducation et de science citoyenne pour aider à protéger nos océans et à renforcer l’éthique de la conservation dans le monde entier. Malheureusement, aujourd’hui, il ne reste sur cette île que des ruines de cette base scientifique. Tout y est laissé pour abandon, matériel, habitations, produits chimiques… D’une île à l’autre, les navigations peuvent se faire soit, prudemment, dans peu d’eau, soit par l’extérieur, côté Atlantique, avant de re-rentrer par une passe. Et là, on est content quand on l’emprunte dans le bon sens du courant. Faut voir comme c’est impressionnant entre deux marées ! On se croirait dans un cours de rodéo ! Certes le cours est bref, à peine quelques mètres, mais de quoi grandement apprécier le mouillage suivant, bien calés à marée basse à l’embouchure d’une mangrove. We have a very stiff, structural front beam without the need for whisker stays or any of the associated paraphernalia. We have a forestay attachment point which is super strong. And perhaps the biggest difference is the addition of the attachment point for the inner forestay which allows us to fly a storm sail or trinket. It was our longest offshore passage from Deltaville, VA to Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas and the boat was not ready. We had prepared endlessly for this moment, hence the whole reason we hauled out in the first place, but the boat yard, seemed unable to restore our Yanmar Engines to working order. We already missed the whole Salty Dawg Rally, networking, celebrations, and all the events leading up to the crossing. We were also stuck 5 hours North in Deltaville instead of in Hampton, Va. And, we were not well rested due to a Nor'Easter that blew through. After the 4th sea trial, the engines seemed to be functional, a weather window opened and our friend, Alex, showed up at the dock in Deltaville. We were cautiously elated. We frantically completed our online covid tests, filed our health visas with the Bahamian government, and applied for our cruising permit. The sun set and the darkness surrounded us. Our buddy boats for the crossing started the journey ahead of us. They couldn't wait. We always follow the advice to never leave in the dark and arrive in the dark especially in an unfamiliar anchorage, BUT the weather window was closing. We had to be in Marsh Harbor by Thursday night or risk facing gale force winds. Though completely exhausted, and probably against better judgment, we untied the lines from the dock and headed South. It was 9 pm. The Chesapeake was all chewed up. The wind chop, waves, swell had no pattern. If we could put up the sail, it would help with stability, but we were not going to attempt this feat on a dark night, in unfamiliar waters. We decided to motor until day break. The first two days of the trip, we endured rough conditions. It was uncomfortable and challenging in every way. None of us felt well so we picked at the plethora of snacks on board, hoping the conditions would change soon. After heading into the gulf stream, contrary to earlier reports, the conditions improved and we all seemed to get our sea legs and settle in. This was just in time to address a bunch of issues that emerged like snapping the first reef line, the exhaust hose base coming untethered, and a dry engine dipstick when tested. Thankfully, the dolphin & whale sightings, as well as the two caught Mahi gave us hope and life long memories. We had to motor the entire trip, but we arrived mid-day in Marsh Harbor on Thursday. Thankfully, we dodged the 50 kt winds that others faced who left after we did.
