This week’s guest yacht is a beautiful vessel that I was, first sad to see discontinued, shortly after Fountaine Pajot bought Dufour, and then elated when the Dufour Catamaran shipyard, located in Forli Italy, was sold to a Croatian company who relaunched the model and has since added an equally beautiful smaller version, the Cervetti 44. We are talking about The Dufour Catamaran 48! The new owner is financially backed up by Fozzy Group, whose yearly turnover amounted to 2.1 billion EUR in 2019. Fozzy Group is one of the largest trade industrial groups in Ukraine and one of the leading Ukrainian retailers, with over 500 outlets all around the country. Today we are going to 1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels 2. Do a full tour asking, “What would Sylvia say?” 3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier 4. Have a look at the used market for 3-5 year old comparables 5. The USS Perry was a WWII American Destroyer operating as a minesweeper less than a mile from Angaur Island on September 13, 1944 when she scraped a mine at 14:18, sinking her to 78m/255feet. Our team dived and documented the wreck on August 11, 2022 -- 100 years and 4 days after she was commissioned. James has been friends with us now for several years, really since he bought his Oyster 485, a sister boat to Talisman. James is a character and has so much energy it makes you feel lazy. Through his podcasts, live streams, and YouTube Sailing Zingaro episodes, he has created an impressive following. James is typical in some way of the YouTube influencers that have manage to make a living out of the cruising lifestyle. And to do that, you need loads of charisma and creativity. James is a machine when it comes to reaching out and keeping multiple chainsaws in the air as he juggles his life and business interests. James had just arrived with his girlfriend Anna when this episode starts, and despite a rough passage from Aruba, they made it in fine style. But drama stalks James, and they were immediately turned away by the Dutch Sint Maarten officials over paperwork issues. But we gave them the secret sauce for clearing into the French side (St Martin is an island shared by the Dutch on the east half, and the French on the west). Soon, they were laying at anchor in Marigot Bay, under the now silent guns of Fort Louis. James had managed to destroy his new furler, and even damage the headstay during his epic trip to the island, and Marigot was not in a kind mood while we were there. The winds were blowing 20 knots and the anchorage was rolley. I had offered to go up the mast, but when I saw what I suspected to see I knew that even if I did go up, James would need to go as well, so decided to play cameraman instead. Wendy did the winch operator honors, as it’s a job she does well when I’m in the bosun’s chair. We manage to find a window to leave through the only pass of Maupiti and head for Samoa, 1200 miles to the northeast. The sea state is not ideal with 3m+ waves but more importantly crossed swells. Just the two of us on board.

We left Jacare Marina Village with heavy hearts After a little over 3 months. With getting so used to the safety of land life, we were a little apprehensive but within hours we were back in the swing of things. Coping with the conditions and getting into our sleeping / on-watch schedules. As seems to be a pattern with our passages, a day in, we had storms and squalls coming by one after the other-but that just comes with the territory in this part of the world. We had hoped to do a few stops across the north of Brazil but ultimately decided to head directly to the Salvation Islands. Weather conditions and the strong current didn’t make for east passages to and from land. We crossed the equator in a storm so couldn’t do the whole big expected ceremony that we had planned but we acknowledged King Neptune, gifted him with some silver coins and alcohol.
