Hello and welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast. This is part 1 of a 3 part series on solo sailing. In this episode, Mike and I talk about docking the boat solo. It’s taken me over 2 seasons to figure out how to dock the boat solo in most conditions with confidence. The key “discovery” was using 2 large round ball fenders at the stern of the boat. This allows me to come into the slip stern first and nuzzle up to the dock. I then leave the boat in reverse idle and the boat will just stay there and I can get off the boat and secure the lines. Make sure you listen to the episode for some other key tips. I recently spent a week on the Celebrity Silhouette cruising up to the Norwegian Fjords. Pricing is returning to normal so the cost of a balcony cabin with single occupancy was quite steep, so I decided to take an inside cabin. This is my review of that experience! Figuring out and fitting the cabin-sole cam-latch (NOT cheap!) hardware; putting all of the little access hatch parts together and getting this gem fitted; applying GRP/fibreglass to some marine plywood which will be used to make the LPG/Propane gas fuel aft, Port hatch locker box; I FINALLY take you UP on to Mistress' decks to show you around the aft deck area and explain several things regarding the WHAT AND WHY's I have made and fitted to her decks; and lastly make up the X5 panels to be used in making the fuel locker box! Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval arcitects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress. It really is strange being so deep into the Sahara desert when you live full time on a boat! It's completely different from the very watery existence we are use to! But the Sahara does not disappoint, it is awe inspiring with its huge rolling dunes, sweltering heat, crystal clear skies and fresh air to breath! The camels are surprisingly friendly, and we enjoy many nights around the fire, enjoying good food, good company and having a right giggle and well deserved rest after the long days trekking! #167 ✍️Côte ouest de Guadeloupe. Le mouillage est agréable, non loin, la réserve du nom de Cousteau, depuis 1959. Le célèbre commandant océanographe, en voyant la beauté des fonds de Malendure, lors d’un essai avec sa toute nouvelle soucoupe plongeante, aurait émis le souhait de faire protéger le site en réserve marine. Cependant, durant un demi-siècle, son statut n’a que le nom. Elle devient véritablement réserve naturelle au sens législatif du terme, avec les mesures associées qu’en 2009. Il en résulte que le corail nous semble bien discret et l’eau un peu trouble. Faut dire qu’après les Bahamas, nous ne sommes peut-être pas partiaux. Ça n’empêche que vu du ciel, les dégradés de bleus qui s’étendent de la côte vers le large, ont tout pour charmer les voyageurs. Mon capitaine en témoigne ! De son gyrocoptère la vue est splendide et surtout, l’expérience, sensationnelle ! J’aime autant la découverte que les rencontres et ici, en Guadeloupe, elles ne manquent pas. Mais il ne faut pas s’arrêter à son goût amère, la naupathie n’est pas une fatalité, on y survit ! Il y a tant à apprendre. Prendre la météo, lire une carte, sentir le vent, régler les voiles… Tout ça s’assimile en pratiquant, et entre Marie-Galante et les Saintes, le bassin de croisière est tout trouvé. 20 juillet, mon Amour vient d’hurler de douleur. Je ne l’ai jamais entendu crier comme ça. Nous sommes au mouillage de l’ilot Gosier. Il a fait de la fièvre toute la nuit. Déjà, il y a deux jours, une douleur intercostale l’avait fait sortir d’une plongée prématurément. Quelques signes précédents m’avaient fait prendre rendez-vous chez un médecin à son encontre pour vendredi. Nous sommes mercredi, il ne peut plus bouger. Nos amis sont encore avec nous. Je suis terrifiée. Impossible de le déplacer, il souffre trop. Je vois qu’une solution, le CROSSAG, seuls eux pourront me dire quoi faire. J’ai tellement peur. Il est livide, les trais tirés par la détresse ! Les secours sont mis en place, le Dragon arrive, mon capitaine va se faire hélitreuiller.
