Short video of my sail from SF to Ft. Bragg. The weather was fair so not to much action. I anchored in Drakes bay the first night and Fish Rocks the second night. Both were to foggy and dark to get any good video. I don't recommend anchoring in Fish Rocks unless you are confident in the ability to dodge rocks in the fog. This was my first leg of my solo sail to Eureka CA. With many fuel issues at sea I was able to make repairs in Ft. Bragg. Our BIGGEST SCARE living on a boat yet: Explosions on our boat??!(...and the captains’ suffering continues 😱😅) After battling strong winds in Crete we sail to Pylos and manage to hide in an abandoned marina. Here we also meet Kostas again. A friend we made in the short time, we visited Pylos last summer. He has been so kind to find a safe space for us and SV CUBA. So we celebrate our reunion with some Greek specialities! But during our stay we have no time to spare and soon enough we upgrade our sailing equipment. Our head sail has a rip that needs fixing, and more boat projects await us. Enrique has a brilliant idea to engineer a solution so we can edit our videos at night. Our boat battery bank is not the best and our laptop battery is even worse. At night, therefore, we have no option to work on our sailing episodes. With a bit of ingenuity, however, we are now able to even use our old laptop at night! A massive boat upgrade for us haha! The celebration that we managed to improve our boatlife does not last too long though. A huge bang from beneath the sofa makes us jump and hide for cover! Is that smoke shooting out from all corners below us?? Are we having a fire on our boat? What sailboat disaster are we experiencing here?! I am ready to get the fire extinguisher and fire blanket! Enrique is dazed and confused as he hit his head while fleeing the disaster zone. Luckily this is not the end of our sailing adventures or our journey around the world (and the captain is not injured). However, soon we will have to leave our safe harbour once again, as a new sailing destination lies on the horizon. In the midst of the winter, we will sail from Greece to North Africa. While this might be an easy 5-day sail in the summer, we now have to dodge a huge weather system and we need to make a massive sailing detour. We had plans to set sail south by now. So why haven't we done it? Well, certainly COVID's prolonged grasp on EVERYTHING has contributed in many, MANY ways -- from border crossing challenges to supply chain issues to good old-fashioned loved ones *actually* contracting it. But beyond the global pandemic, we have been dealing with a variety of rather mundane logistical issues surrounding getting the boat ready to sail away. This video highlights just one small but important system on the boat that has caused us more trouble than most - our windlass. If you don't know what a windlass is, don't worry. I'll explain it (complete with pictures). The real purpose of this video though is to show that while you can have intentions on a sailboat, you can never really have an ironclad plan. I have just returned from a cruise through the Eastern Mediterranean around the Greek islands with Norwegian Cruises on the Norwegian Gem. This is a review of that cruise... It was a 9 night itinerary starting and ending in Trieste in Italy (not Venice, although that's where Norwegian said the cruise started...) We visited Kotor, Corfu, Santorini, Athens, Santorini, Kefalonia, Dubrovnik and Split so a port every day which is how I like to cruise - none of those boring sea days to spoil the travel experience! In january 2022 we travelled for one week from hut to hut on husky-sleds in kiruna area, northernmost part of sweden, about 150km north of the arctic circle. The tour was professionally guided by alexander from lapland wild paws, whose alascan huskies also pulled the sleds. The dogs had to be taken care of by ourselves (including chopping 60kilos of frozen meat per day), also water had to be fetched from an ice hole and fire had to be made. In the evening you could relax at the hot sauna and see the stunning aurora borealis.

Adding a Hydrovane to Paragon is turning out to be a massive project. First there was the unboxing, next the mount was made, and now it’s time to adhere that mount to Paragon. What could possibly go wrong hanging off the stern of the boat with a heavy chunk of fibreglass while at anchor? (Don’t drop it in the water…don’t drop it in the water…) We have sailed hundreds of miles to some of the most beautiful anchorages in Denmark in order to…sand and grind fibreglass and epoxy? Yay! The aim was, and still is, to get as much of our power input from green sources as possible. To do that we have almost 1000W of solar, we also have a large Balmar alternator to get as much power in, when the engine is running, as possible. But the key to making this work was the Super B Lithium batteries we fitted last winter. These accept a charge much better than AGMs do and can be deep discharged without worry. So the hope was that on days where we have to motor or we find ourselves on a dock with shore power we can quickly recharge the batteries fully. Well strangely for the Med. we have had very few times that we've had to motor this season (mustn't complain about that!) and we have only visited a marina twice in 6 months, so we do find ourselves occasionally having to be careful with our power usage. But the other important point is we haven't been able to charge the Super B Lithium house bank fully on regular occasions to allow them to top balance. The solution we have come up with is to have a small, efficient, petrol generator and rather than purely charge the house bank with it we use it to charge an Ecoflow Max with an extension battery. The max also has its own fold out solar panels that we can deploy when at anchor (we even use the 2 110W panels on top of the upturned dinghy on deck while we're sailing if it's calm). This is good because it is a very efficient way of getting power from a generator. Having the separate batteries in the form of the Ecoflow Max gives us redundancy in power supply. It has its own inverter and in built MPPT for solar, all good things to have on a boat. So if we're running low on power we can fire up the generator to give us more, or if we are wanting to limit the usage from our house bank because we want to top balance we can make sure we use the power from the Ecoflow Max as much as possible to allow the house bank to reach full capacity and top balance the Nomada batteries. There's been lots of talk about hybrid propulsion. How many modes does it have, and what do they do? Nous sommes si vulnérables ! Tout peut basculer en un rien de temps ! Antibiotiques, drain, au bout de 5 jours, le traitement doit être changé. La fièvre persiste, il est sous oxygène ! La nouvelle thérapie est efficace, l’état de ma moitié s’améliore. Je vais mieux. Jonathan vient d’arriver en Guyane. Nous n’avons pas voulu le prévenir avant pour ne pas le stresser en navigation, pourtant, il savait ! Une connexion, un instinct, il nous avoue avoir ressenti une grosse angoisse le jour où son papa a été hospitalisé. Maintenant, tout le monde sait, tous ceux qui nous suivent et c’est des centaines de messages de soutien, bienveillants et rassurants. Et puis, j’ai Christine et Éric qui sont restés avec moi et notre maman et notre papa de la mer, tout près. Black Lion, lui, est au mouillage. Je lui ai trouvé une place en marina pour plus de sécurité. Malgré l’aide que j’ai pour bouger Blacky, j’ai l’impression de partir en transat ! Une transat de trois milles, je suis ridicule ! Il ne manquait que ça, je suis cas contact Covid ! Résignée, je ne retournerai voir Cyril qu’une fois certaine d’être négative pour ne lui faire prendre aucun risque. Cette histoire me laisse le temps de désinfecter tout le bateau et de préparer son retour. Tapis rouge ! 1 août, mon capitaine rentre enfin à bord. Quel bonheur ! Nous avons tellement eu peur. Son lion rugit de plaisir. 13 jours dans l’incertitude et le stress, la tension redescend. Reste 22 jours de traitement antibiotiques par intraveineuse et 6 semaines de kiné respiratoire. The Ragged Islands are a remote chain of islands in the Bahamas. To sail there, you have to pick a good weather window as there is little protection from the islands if there is a big blow or if the winds shift from the East. Also, the anchorages are very rolly, so it can be a challenge to stay too long. But, we found a good weather window and a buddy boat to travel with and we were off. It was a sporty sail to Flamingo Cay, but we made it. We then sailed down to the final island, Little Ragged Cay. It's the farthest South that we wanted to go before making our way North again by island hopping. After two days in Little Ragged Cay and a short visit to the only town in the Raggeds, we headed North to Hog Cay to join a dozen or so boats already in the anchorage.
