After a couple of trips down to Kilrush over the winter and some help from the team at Mast and Rigging Ireland the Bottom Up Boats crew was reading to sail their newly acquired J109 "Joie de vie" half way around Ireland to her new home in Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. With a good weather window forecast the team was quietly optimistic that they could all complete the journey of a life time. The plan for day 1 was adjusted after discussion with the friendly marina staff, the plan was to leave Kilrush before first light, riding the outrushing tide in the Shannon river on the way to Portmagee. A beautiful sunset and an early night gave way to a heavy fog. After spending an hour or two in the marina lough and no sign of the fog lifting the Bottom UP Boats crew decided it was too dangerous to take on the ships in the Shannon without the correct radar gear. The only option was to head into town for a full Irish Breakfast and way for the tide to come back in enough to get on our way. By early afternoon the sun was burning off the last of the fog and we were underway, the plans has to be readjusted as we would not be making slow progress into the tide on the way out the Shannon river. We adjusted our course for Fenit Harbour in the hope we could make up time on day 2 of the J109 delivery. The passage to Fenit was great with the harbour masters looking after us, giving us a ride into the local pub. After talking to the local we planned for and early night so we could depart before sunrise to try and make up time by flying down the west coast to Cape Clear Island and the more southerly point of the island of Ireland. We’re sailing just 3 miles north of our current anchorage, near the western edge of the Sea and are headed to explore a new spot. We drop anchor once we arrive into the stunning cove with red cliffs and turquoise water and quickly jump into the dinghy and head to shore. Our friends on sv Delos are already there and we set out together on a hike through the desert valley. Giant cactus in many varieties abound plus we find a large population of crabs. Before long we reach the other side of the island and are treated to an incredible view of the deep, clear turquoise water below us. Back on Calico Skies Grace jumps in the still water to cool off as the sun begins to set. It's a cruisers dream turned reality: All is quiet and perfectly calm and stunning beauty surrounds our boat in this unbelievable anchorage. As the colors in the sky change from orange to purple we head to shore for a bonfire with our friends on Delos. It's a surreal experience as gentle waves crash on the white sand beach and we enjoy the evening with our special friends, taking in the beauty of the vast desert cliffs and playing with little Sierra. The next morning we are treated to one of our favorite aspects of cruising life when things are going well: A lovely, still anchorage and a bright sunny beautiful morning. We enjoy our coffee in the cockpit and Bill retrieves our laptop from Delos with a video that's now uploaded and ready to go live. We then set off on an adventure to find a group of Sea Lions who reside a nearby island. The largest population in the Sea numbering 600 we find many before even making it all the way to the spot. Huge Bulls laze on rocky cliffs and others loud barks echo off the surrounding walls. We move on to our destination at Los Islotes where we find even more Sea Lions and are treated to an up close and personal encounter of a pair engaged in a romantic trist. There's also a very playful female diving in loops below us and jumping through the air which we're lucky to catch both on our gropro below the surface and above! On our way back we are lured into a cave exploration that turns into a spontaneous free dive adventure. The perfectly clear, deep water is unreal and we enjoy swimming through underwater arches and caves amongst brightly colored fish. The clarity of the water in 30+ feet is remarkable and combined with the underwater rock structures its a unique experience. We dinghy back to our anchorage La Parida and go to shore for a beach chill. Bill and Sierra get comfortable laying in some inland pools of water, enjoying the sun, warmth and lazy vibe together. Running Aground Episode They say there are three types of sailors – Those who have run aground, those that will run aground, and liars. Well, in this episode, we finally tell our story of the first time we ran HARD aground in our Jeanneau Sun Fizz Sailboat. We had just bought our boat on Lake Champlain in Vermont. Lake Champlain borders Canada, Vermont and New York, so it was a great location for us to start our journey, since it was only a 6 hour drive from our home in the Finger Lakes of New York. The northern part of the lake connects to the St Lawrence Seaway and the Southern end of the lake connects to the Hudson river via the Champlain Canal. The Green Mountains, Taconic Mountains and Adirondack Mountains surround the lake with beautiful high peaks but also makes it very difficult to navigate. This dramatic landscape means the lake can have very deep water that suddenly rises abruptly with underwater mountains. Even though we had paid for the boat, we were waiting for some of our paperwork to be processed. We were importing the boat from Canada to the United States and the process can be quite complicated. (For those of you interested in the importation process, let us know in the comments below if you would like us to break down the process in a separate episode). So we had not officially registered our boat yet since we needed a cancellation confirmation from the Canadian government before we could submit our paperwork to the United States Coast Guard for documentation. We took a risk, and decided, despite all that, we should test out our new boat and take her out for our first sail as new owners! We had a sea trial with the previous owners before we closed on the boat, during which we were told there are buoys to watch out for in certain areas. There was no chart plotter on the boat, and we were planning to use Navionics on our phone, but as we were preparing to sail off the mooring, we got distracted and forgot to pay attention to the depth. In our minds, we knew which areas to avoid. Our boat has a 6.8ft draft and a bolt on fin keel made of iron. I don’t think I can put into words how loud the sound is when that much iron hits hard rock at 5 knots. Andrea tells the story, that she got into a car accident a month later, hit a deer and totaled her car. The sound of us hitting aground was about 5 times as loud as that car crash. It is terrifying. As if running around wasn’t enough to deal with, it also was our first time having the dogs on board and we were in the process of moving. We had brought our first van load of items to unpack on the boat to start our liveaboard life. More drama ensued when the Marina owner in North Hero Vermont gave us a hard time for leaving our dogs in the car for a few minutes. It was a cold brisk morning, and we had to dingy back and forth from shore with all of the stuff we were unpacking onto the boat. The previous owner had paid for the mooring ball for the entire season upfront, and it transferred to us during the sale. We were planning to speak with someone in the Marina office our first morning there but wanted to unload a few things from the car first, including our morning coffee. Since the dogs had never been on the boat alone, we knew they would feel more comfortable in the car waiting for us. We certainly didn’t want them to panic, jump overboard, or bark and disrupt all of the other boaters. So it seemed like the best solution. Downsizing your living space is a huge undertaking, let alone when your new home is a 40 ft boat! In this episode, we also discover we still have a lot of items we will need to part ways with The final chapter of the episode Logan had several large boxes of art some of it was great some of it not so much so he had a eccentric art burning ceremony letting go of the old to allow something new to take its place. In this episode on Explore with Perseverance Josh sails solo from the Phoebus anchorage on the north side of Norfolk to the Great Bridge Free Dock on the south side of Norfolk. When Josh thinks something is wrapped around the prop or keep he stops at the Tidewater marina so a diver an go check it out. While down there the diver also changed our pitch bolt from "18 degrees" to "20 degrees". He also has a quick tip for moving and tightening the bolt for the alternator belt. Something we recently learned... If you have even a little rust where you V belt rests it will tare it up which makes our engine full of rubber dust. We would love to get a high output alternator with a serpentine belt to avoid this problem in the first place. These serpentine belts are also a lot easier to replace than our V belt. If you have any questions please let us know in the comments below! We should do a video on this but our 20 "degrees" of pitch on the prop means it should move the boat 20 inches through the water with one revolution of the propeller.
