Back in the 1950s the Soviet Union developed a range of extraordinary looking ground effect craft. The Caspian Sea Monster was 100m long and could do 400 knots. Today, composite experts Moore Brothers are involved in a company called REGENT, Regional Electric Ground Effect Nautical Transportation, that works on a similar principle but adds hydrofoils in the equation.

Mo'orea is one of the few places on earth that its possible to actually get in the water with these giant whales, and its been made possible by a marine biologist named Dr. Michael Poole, who spearheaded the legislation necessary to create an environment that is safe and comfortable for whales to have us in the water with them. In order to keep the bottom of your boat clean, you need to protect it from an accumulation of micro-organisms, plants, algae, or small animals on your underwater surfaces The normal method of keeping your hull clean is by using paint that contains a biocide to prevent growth in the first place, but these biocides are typically only effective for around a year, so at some point every season, you need to get her out of the water, clean off the mess and apply a fresh coat of paint. Since visiting and then purchasing MacMac in late October, the intervening weeks between then and Christmas have been packed with preparation! After a day of round-the-cans in Plymouth Sound (see Day 1 video) the spectacular multihull fleet joined the Royal Western Yacht Club Triangle Race. Three days of coastal racing: Plymouth - Falmouth; Falmouth - Fowey; Fowey - Plymouth. As always there was a good mix of conditions, though winds tended towards light to zero.
