We finally got our StarLink delivered as some of the last-minute shipments before we set sail into the pacific. Our dinghy was almost destroyed after using the worst dinghy dock ever and experienced some challenges with the huge difference in tidal waters on the Pacific side. After moving the navigation screen from the nav station up into the cockpit it left a big hole in the wall down below. So we decided to make the workstation for video editing a bit more streamlined and with some plywood managed to organize things a bit better, not to forget a safe and permanent install of the iMac onboard. We have been working hard the days after our canal transit to be ready for our upcoming pacific crossing. Not everything found its way to the video as recording everything slows us down. But we have changed the water pressure pump and serviced our watermaker and even the generator only to mention a few things. Our goal is to make everything ready for our long passage and then use some days to just relax and rest before we start the longest sail ever. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING! I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the pacific ocean. Even though this is season 5 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.
Episode #290 : Season 9 : The South Pacific Hello Friends, On this episode I depart Savusavu at midnight and make way for the former leper colony island of Makogai Island. Makogai is now under the care of the Marine Fisheries department and is where they grow all of the coral for the Fijian Islands as well as growing the endangered Giant Clams. They also use the facilities as a nursery for sea turtles when they are hatching. I have an amazing visit with the only two occupants of island, Pau and Mary. Heard about there life there and got a tour of the grounds. If you enjoy the channel please "Like" the videos and Subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. But a well-timed Happy New Year email from Leopard Australia set in motion events that led to ZSpars coming to our boat, checking our mast and teaching us about our rigging and how to tension it correctly. We want to share what we learned that day with you. We value people sharing their real experiences and felt that it served the sailing community to share our positive experience and the information ZSpars gave us which can help other sailors and live aboard cruisers. At 05:20:28 UTC / 02:20:28 local time in Brazil, Team Malizia glided across the finish line off Ocean Live Park in Itajaí to win Leg 3 of The Ocean Race, collecting 5 points in the process. The win comes on the 35th day of racing and after 14,714 nautical miles of intense, close-quarters racing. Early in the leg, it didn't appear likely that we would see Team Malizia at the front of the fleet for the finish. Within days of the start in Cape Town the team discovered serious damage to the top of their mast and needed to devote nearly two full days to effecting difficult repairs at sea, with an uncertain result.
Team Malizia are the first ones to arrive in Itajai, and Team Holcim-PRB are close to the finish line, while there's still a lot of sailing for 11th Hour Racing Team and Biotherm 🏁 #TheOceanRace Don’t forget to subscribe for more The Ocean Race: https://goo.gl/BzBCwU Check out our full video catalogue: https://goo.gl/nrB9ay Like The Ocean Race on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theoceanrace/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theoceanrace/ Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theoceanrace/ Read More: http://www.theoceanrace.com
Subscrise, Share, like and check the All Bell if you like our exclusive content. It would be impossible to overstate how challenging this last run up the coast has been. Since Cape Horn the teams have been in a constant battle. Normally the turn to the north provides a respite from the southern ocean and a return to a week of tactical racing to the finish. This year, it has been a continuous series of new challenges to be met by crews and boats who have been pushed long past their operational limits. The finish line off the Ocean Live Park in Itajai can't come soon enough. The ETA for the winning boat is between 0200 and 0800 local time Sunday morning in Itajaï - 0600 to noon UTC on Sunday. Regardless of final arrival time, a very warm welcome is awaiting in Itajaí.

Enjoying our channel? Consider joining the Calico Skies Patreon Crew for as little as $2 a month to get lots of extra goodies :) https://www.patreon.com/CalicoSkiesSailing This episode starts with a sweet recap of the bottom progress we've made on Calico Skies and the steps it took to get us here: Multiple rounds of fairing, sanding, glassing - then more sanding and fairing. We take viewers back to the beginning with all 71 blisters to present day where we've got several coats of barrier paint on and she already looks like a completely different boat. The next step is to give the keel some more attention which Bill does by applying 5200 which will bridge the gap between the led keel and fiberglass hull. This permanent type of seal will fill the gap but also provide flexibility between the led and fiberglass which move differently. Then he fairs and sands it to prepare it for barrier coat. Next we head back to the States for Grace to attend a doctors appointment and to pick up a new 420 amp solar panel from SunPowered Yachts. Upon arrival to Mexico we unload our new panel then take a quick walk to the OXO for water. We can't drink the water in Penasco and Bill forgot that we were on empty before heading up to the US. We've mentioned that Grace has been up in the US quite a lot recently attending doctors appointments and we flash back to one week ago while up in AZ. Grace discusses a diagnosis she received about a month ago that she hasn't shared yet publicly for various reasons (mainly that things moved quickly and one thing led to another and all of it was unexpected). While the good news is we caught DCIS at a very early stage the bad news is Grace will need surgery and boat work and cruising plans will take a big back seat to her health. Surgery date and recovery time are unknown but the estimate is 1 to 1.5 months to recover from the mastectomy taking us into April. Back in Penasco on the drive to the boat yard we discuss the complications of expected medical issues while cruising. Thankfully because Calico Skies is hauled out that makes travel much simpler since systems are offline. It means we can drive up and down at a moments notice and of all the places we've cruised in 7 years we are in a great position. Proximity to the states, family living in Scottsdale these are huge benefits. At the yard we work on fitting our 3 new solar panels with the help of Super Ryan who steps in. We are interrupted for a brief early morning tequila tasting with the yard Manager Sal. Then its back to Bill and Ricky our welder bantering and discussing next steps. Bill then gives viewers, and Grace who's been away, an update on the the progress that has been made to the arch in the last week plus. The big improvement is reduction of side by side play which was achieved by installing cross bars and welding the feet to the stern. We show viewers how much movement the arch initially had when we stress tested it and how little it has now. Then we discuss all of the other improvements which are bars for our paddle board and a welded D ring for the ratchet straps for the dinghy to name a couple. 0:00 Intro 0:10 Recap of Prepping for Bottom Paint 2:02 5200 at the Keel Joint & Fairing the Keel 5:21 Sun Powered Yacht Solar Panel Delivery 6:55 Late Night Water Run 9:39 Grace Health Update 16:40 Drive to Yard 18:52 3 New 410w SunPowered Yachts Solar Panels 20:40 Tequila Tasting at Cabrale's Boat Yard 21:32 Arch Update ~-~~-~~~-~~-~- The marine environment is tough on our camera gear, help keep us filming! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/22NXPOQ8KCUO4/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_1?_encoding=UTF8&type=wishlist 5% off TotalBoat Orders! https://www.totalboat.com/calicoskiessailing 10% off SunPowered Yachts Panels, use code CALICO10 http://affiliates.sunpoweredyachts.com/337514/17099 Check out our store and shop our merch at https://calicoskiessailing.com/get-your-calico-skies-gear/ New Spinnaker Short Sleeve Uni-Sex Tee https://calicoskiessailing.com/spinnaker-tee/ Patreon too much of a commitment? show support and buy us a beer or some diesel :) https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/calicoskiessailing

Our first few days in Panama were absolutely wild - so much adventure and new experiences! We met some tribesmen from the Kuna tribe of Panama, visited a local village, ate some questionable meat and taught an English lesson in the jungle. Come along as we are looking for a suitable marina along the epic North Shore of mighty Lake Superior. This time around, it's going to be the most beautiful Silver Bay Marina. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=26440204&fan_landing=true https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_donations&business=87RR7KHSEP8XY&item_name=Buy+us+a+beer¤cy_code=USD&source=url
Just a quick update on the finished projects aboard the Mighty Sparrow. Big thanks to all those who helped with the massive effort to get Sparrow back in action! My hope is to set sail in the next week or so and have a month of offshore sailing before returning to land and working for the next bunch of months. Ep17: Sailing to the Med through French Canals and Rivers takes some effort. It also requires resilience when your boat gets bashed about in locks. We visit Bailly Lapierre in Burgundy where Crémant de Bourgogne is produced. Options sails from Sens to Châtel-Censoir through more than 20 locks on her way to the top of the Nivernais Canal. Seeing a large swell rise up behind you and form into a cresting wave is NOT an ideal sight during a sandbar crossing! The Aussie east coast is littered with these dreaded bar crossings and as we make out way north on an east coast run - it's our turn to take on Yamba...
We made it to the Dominican Republic! First stop Punta Cana in the beautiful Cap Cana Marina. Here our vessel was boarded by 6 government representatives before we were officially checked in with DR customs and Immigration. We can’t stay long, so we keep pushing to reach Samana. #capcana #puntacana #samana
Whoever came up with the saying boat loads of fun has never done a boat project. This episode is nothing short and full of just that! Wicked is a 2009 43 Beneteau Oceanis that suffered extensive fiberglass damage. Watch as we transform her in minutes! We bought Wicked in June 2020 at the height of the (ahem cough cough) and risked it all to make our dreams come true. Sailing the world together has been a dream of ours for sometime now. But thanks to those YouTube Sailors who came before us for the encouragement and inspiration its becoming a reality. Thank you!
