In this episode Bill explains that the next project will be dropping the rudder because of suspect-looking pitting at the joint. Calico Skies is hauled out at Cabrales boat yard in Penasco Mexico and it's the beginning of a mini refit. For this project Bill first must first uninstall and remove the autopilot beginning with the loosening and removing the bolts that hold the drive it in place, followed by the quadrant and bolt on the bushing. Bill then uses pieces of wood to support the rudder underneath in anticipation of removing the bolts. Once the quadrant and stuffing box are loose the shaft is ready for movement! Bill then removes the remaining bolts and friends catch and position the rudder outside as the shaft moves out and the rudder drops down. Initially it's hard to see exactly what is going on with our rudder so Bill uses a wire brush attachment on the drill to remove surface debris. Unfortunately after some time it becomes apparent that the shaft is full of pitting, particularly where the thrust washer may have rubbed against the shaft over time. This crevice corrosion is a bad sign and at 1-2 millimeters far from negligible. Upon further investigation we learn from Sabre that the rudder shaft is not solid stainless rather a hollow pipe which is attached from the solid piece to the rudder. The pitting is two deep to ignore given that relatively shallow thickness of the pipe and that means the rudder either has to be repaired or rebuilt. Bill and Grace discuss their thought process when considering which option to choose for resolving the rudder problem. We decide to have it completely rebuilt because a Florida company already has the mold and a new one will give us peace of mind when crossing the ocean down the line. This brings us to the impact this will have on our plans: Given the cost to replace and the time it will take to have it made we feel that planning to prepare for an ocean crossing in upcoming March will be too rushed and cause us too much stress. We thought of many places to go and routes to get there and none of them seemed to sit right with us. Meanwhile, during our indecisiveness, the time on our Schengen visa has been counting down and we were running out of time to stay in Europe. So we came up with a solution to hold the countdown on our visa while we muddled through our future plans. The solution? A trip to the UK to visit family! With cheap flights however, come budget travel experiences and you might have a few laughs at our expense as we sleep on floors, get caught on wrong roads in a country that’s somewhat new to Adam, and eventually make our way home to visit family who we haven’t seen for years! At the end of the episode, Adam shares that during our travel decision, he actually contacted the founder and CEO of Kraken Yachts, the most bluewater yacht we’ve seen on the market today. There are so many things to love about Horta. Except when two boats crush you against a cement wall. As we make landfall in in Faial, we can still not get over the beauty and charm of this island. UKC is a critical parameter in maritime navigation as it determines the minimum depth of water required for a ship to safely navigate without grounding. The Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) within the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) is deliberately scaled down, making the depth-sounding appear shallower in the Northbound lane. I explain the facts with what is going on in the yard, and after learning that the rogue salvager operating in the yard is now lifting boats with the yard's own in-house Travelift, and under threat of looting, I take the appropriate action. I reveal one of the main reasons I'm buying a yacht and sailing away, and announce some travel plans. Meet the manatees, Aramaná, Tureygua, Guacara and Mabó who are getting rehabilitated in the Puerto Rico Conservation Center for Manatees. Im Frühjahr 2021 haben wir eine werftneue Lagoon 42 von der französischen Atlantikküste in die Türkei überführt. Wir, das sind vor allem Sebastian Kummer, der bereits die Lagoon-Modelle 46 und 450 über viele tausend Meilen gesegelt ist, und ich, Jens Brambusch. Als langjähriger Monohull-Segler und Live-on-board auf einer Moody 425 war es für mich der erste Törn auf einem Katamaran. Für rund ein Drittel der Strecke war ich zudem der Skipper. Um es vorweg zu nehmen, ich war kein großer Fan von Katamaranen. Kann mich der Törn eines Besseren belehren? Wie sind die Segeleigenschaften der Lagoon 42? Was ist das wichtigste Segel? Ma’s Apricot Upside Down Cake Preheat oven to 325F Melt butter on stove in the same pan you'll put in the oven - I used a standard stainless pie dish. The Rolex Spirit of Yachting film series present the Rolex Farr 40 World Championships 2016 — the action, highlights and memorable moments. This iconic regatta has captivated the yachting community since its inception in 1998. The 19th edition, held in Sydney, Australia, provided the perfect stage for close racing between evenly-matched, 40-foot monohull racing yachts, helmed by skilled and competitive owners. This year’s reward — the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship trophy and the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch — went to Alex Roeper’s crew on the US yacht Plenty for a second time.

Hall 15 at boot Düsseldorf has some really interesting small boats, so Mark Jardine took a look around to see what he could find. We start with the Pegasus, a single person electric foiler with a fuselage like a vintage Formula One car, and would really stand out at one of the Italian Lakes, such as Garda or Como. We then moved on to the Birdyfish, two-handed foiling dinghy, which looks like a cross between a Fireball dinghy and an IMOCA keelboat, complete with jib and code zero headsails. If you're short of storage space, the Tiwal range of dinghies could be the thing for you. Inflatable hulls mean that the boat can be kept in a pair of bags, rather than taking up a dinghy park space. Or if ownership is out of reach, the the day charter option for the RS AIRA dayboat could suit you. The boat has plenty of socialising space and an electric engine, and the charter model makes it very interesting for getting people into sailing. We then take a look at a Class Mini, which is the starting option for many of the stars of the offshore solo sailing world, including the Vendée Globe. The Mini at boot had a very distinct scow bow, which has become more and more popular over the past decade. The Ovington Boats stand included Matt Wearn's gold medal winning ILCA from Paris 2024, a K1 dinghy, a 29er, and both the VX One and VX Two on it. We finish up with Projekt Vela, which sees teams of students race in boats they have designed and built themselves, using 75% sustainable or natural materials.
