Last week we finished installing our Hydrovane and immediately wanted to test it out. So we pulled up anchor and hoisted our sails for a trip to Tintamarre, an island to the north of St Martin. Having been on anchor for a few weeks waiting for bad weather to pass, we were very excited to head off and use our Hydrovane for the first time. Initial impressions were fantastic and supported the need for us to be GOOD sailors first and know how to balance the sails and the boat well. For Adam, he aims to do this on most sails. For Khiara... I let him do it all! Which means I have a bit of a learning curve to face and a need to pay more attention in future! We start our NEW ENGINE for the very first time! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we hear the first breathes of our NEW Engine Fang. After running the final hoses and connecting the power, we fill up the engine with all the oils and liquids required before kicking Fang over for the first time. Lets hear this baby Purr! This was a monumental day for Nandji as all our hard work is really starting to take shape. Installing this new engine has been challenging but so very rewarding at the same time. We have never tackled a task this big before, in fact we had never installed an engine into anything before, so it was a huge task and a massive learning curve we have nearly completed. Wait til you hear this baby purr... Beautiful. Thank you to everyone who has watched our videos and contributed to our new engine. It is all because of you legends we have been able to install this brand new engine and re-power Nandji. With all this boat work being complete our vessel is becoming indestructible as we get her ready for our next big trip across the Indian Ocean. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have just sailed 2000nm through Indonesia and have arrived to the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the next big adventure. Currently on the hard stand, we are re-powering and completing a major refit! We departed Australia in July 2017 and have since explored some amazing countries, met some beautiful people and experienced different cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Indian Ocean here we come!! Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit #sailing #boatlife

We aim to publish the refit updates every Sunday. Introduction Esper has been hauled out at PSS Boatyard in Thailand for an extensive refit. The work scheduled so far will include: removal of masts and rigging removal of teak deck osmosis treatment to the hull fill, fare and respray of topsides, deck, masts and booms rebuilding of external storage boxes fitting new navigation system If the budget allows, we would also like to undertake some interior carpentry, including: new sole boards reveneering repositioning of chart table removal of forward heads redesign of forepeak resurfacing of galley and rear heads engine service Each week we plan to update followtheboat with a progress report of work done to the boat, including a number of photographs and video clips. This will culminate in an article for Sailing Today. PSS Boatyard Phithak Sinchai Shipyard, or Phithak Shipyard and Services to English-speaking mariners, is based in the village of Ban Chebilang, approx. 15km north-west of Satun, south Thailand. It traditionally served the huge number of fishing boats in the area but in recent years has proved its mettle in providing services for the leisure industry. Wood, steel and fibreglass are all catered for. More details of the location can be found here. Chebilang is a lively fishing village. The cafes immediately opposite the yard offer the workers excellent food. We can heartily recommend Dom’s place at the end. Her culinary skills deserve international recognition and she surprises us every day with a new dish. Checking In I mention checking-in since a few people asked about rumours circulating re bringing a boat in to Thailand. From what we understood at customs, we have a license to keep the boat in the yard for six months, which may be extended for a further four. Since we don’t intend to be here that long this isn’t relevant to us but we are sure the boatyard would be able to help and advise on this issue should it be required. We were picked up by Moo the moment we could get off the boat who escorted us to immigration, customs and passport control. Note that in Satun these offices close by 4.30pm. Yes, his name really is Moo! Full Thai names are unpronounceable, so we’ve had to get used to abbreviations like Moo, Pon, Un, On, Ton… Satun and Accommodation Since the boat is being stripped we opted to find accommodation in Satun, the closest large town to PSS. I’m pleased to say that Satun is not your typical Thai tourist resort. It is predominantly Muslim and there is little for the passing traveller except the experience of an authentic Thai town. We love it here and it is one of the reasons why we chose PSS. Aside from the boatyard facilities, location was important to us since this will be our home for the next few months. We checked out a couple of houses within the centre of Satun but found them to be dark and depressing. We were after two bedrooms, one to be used as storage, but stumbled upon a new build one-bedroomed joint with verandah in the north-east of Satun. Location was perfect and it’s off-road enough that we’ll be able to let Millie roam the enclosed garden! We’ve hired a scooter so getting around is easy enough. The commute to ‘work’ is an absolute joy. We’re quickly in the countryside where the main road to Chebilang takes us through rubber plantations and rivers. The journey back in the setting sun is even more beautiful, especially after an ‘end-of-work’ beer with fellow liveaboards. Haul Out PSS is located on an estuary, so there are tidal considerations for those with a significant draft (sail boats). We anchored outside the entrance to the estuary to the north (this avoids the many fishing boats that shoot up and down the estuary coming in and out of Chebilang) and spent a night listening to curious noises coming from the surrounding mangroves.
Can Charlie Dalin on MACIF Santé Prévoyance now dream of victory? It could be just 48 hours away with Yoann Richomme on PAPREC ARKÉA 133 miles behind. We hear from Conrad Colman, who has a spruce up in the South Atlantic, and then a resigned-sounding Yoann Richomme. We then discuss the latest tracker, leaderboard and PredictWind routing options for Sam Goodchild in the tight battle for 4th place. We conclude with an update from Denis Van Weynbergh in 35th place. #vg2024 #imoca #vendeeglobe #sailing

The first West Wight Potter 14 was designed and built in 1960 by Stanley Smith of the Isle of Wight for a planned transatlantic crossing. Smith and his brother had previously made a crossing in a larger vessel and Stanley intended his design for a personal, single-handed attempt. As the story goes, on his first sea trial there was such demand for Smith’s new design that he gave up on his transatlantic plans and became a boat builder, eventually producing more than 150 copies of his little yacht. Smith did eventually sail one of his designs from the Isle of Wight to Sweden but he never did make his planned Atlantic crossing. HMS Marine, owned by Herb Stewart, bought the US rights to produce the West Wight Potter from Stanley Smith. Herb started building the Potter 14's in the early 60'sor late 50's. In 1970 or 71, he designed and started building the HMS18. In 1975 the price of resin went through the roof (remember the oil embargo?), and they stopped building the HMS18's. Some have argued that the P19 should not be thought of as a derivative of the p14. However, on closer examination, the lineage is clear. The HMS18 design clearly was inspired by the lines of the original p14's, and Herb Stewart, the architect of the boat was also the owner of HMS Marine at the time of its creation. The flat bottom, the hard chines, fullbodied stern, generous freeboard, and high initial stability. The cockpit grab rails, retracting keel, and the emphasis on seaworthiness as opposed to light air performance. All attributes of the two vessels having much in common. Indeed both craft have logged many a sea voyage and several have crossed oceans. Remarkable journey's include... Stanley Smith, P14 - Isle of Wight to Sweden Bill Teplow, P19 - SF to Hawaii John Van Ruth, P15 - Mexico to Hawaii David Omick, P14 - One of the longest voyages, was a young sailor just 21 years old, who sailed his Potter from Seattle to Ketchikan, Alaska. ('https://www.westwightpotter.com/links-and-clubs/potter-articles/the-david-omick-interview-from-small-craft-advisor-2000/') Today, the West Wight Potter is no longer in production and the last company to produce it has long since gone out of business. Still, there is a vibrant fan base for these vessels, some of which are still being sailed 50-60 years after they were built. Chubby Commutes to Hawaii One of the most remarkable voyages was that of the P19 named "Chubby", which in 2002, sailed from Berkeley Marina, out under the Golden Gate Bridge and on to Hawaii. He also raised the overall freeboard of the cabin by installing a hinged and latched lower companionway door. Bill took 40 days worth of food and water. Generally he relied on canned goods to supply the bulk of his meals. He started the voyage with 26 gallons of water and arrived in Hilo with 12 gallons remaining. On day 10 he hailed the tanker Selendang Ratna out of Manzanillo, Mexico bound for Korea. The officer of the watch asked him if he had been hit by the hurricane. Bill's reply was "What hurricane?" When there was any kind of steady wind at 8 kts or higher, anywhere beyond 60 degrees off the bow, Chubby would easily do over 100 miles a day. Her two best days were 139 and 122 nm and she ran off a total of 13 days of over 100 nm out of the 24-day voyage. All in all, not too shabby for a 19 foot trailer sailer! Here we have a direct copy of Stanley's first boat; this A-type boat is the original plywood version. The B-Type, the first-UK fibreglass Potter 14, was built in the late 60s Afterwards there came the C-Type which was produced by different companies, including West Wight Laminates on the Isle of Wight. In 1987 the Potter Boat Company in Dorset was building what they called the Nova version and by 1991 she was sporting a quadrilateral sail similar to US Potters, but essentially, she was the C-Type without side decks either side of the cockpit. This boat had quarter berths instead of V-berths up forward.
Back to being solo on my little floating home Karl. The first night alone at anchor is a bit stressful due to a massive thunderstorm cruising through. It makes me realize what it means to be back to solo-ing it. My anxiety level peaks up and it feels like starting all over again from zero. The good thing: I find a remedy to take me out of the paralyzing anxiety boost. Find out what it is in this week’s episode! Travelling is challenging at times in a foreign country, that is part of the fun! We sail to the city, prepare the boat, provision and check out of New Caledonia... https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we try to sail south east from the greatest surf spot in New Caledonia. We finally have a plan for our future and this involves heading to the city of Noumea to check out of the country. We have some challenging trade winds to negotiate whilst day sailing for 3 days to return to Noumea. Once back in the big smoke it is time to prepare Nandji for our future adventures. We plan to sail north and to more remote areas, therefore we have to make sure Nandji is ready to do this. We fix any minor issues and try to eliminate any problem for the future where we will have no resources to fix stuff. We attempt all this in a foreign country where not many people speak our language or choose to assist. For the first sail of the season, we have James & Laura (Sailing Zingaro) on board and we set sail to explore the stunning uninhabited island of Klein Curacao. Klein meaning "little" in Dutch is a tiny island situated between the main island of Curacao and Venezuela. It has a rather dark past as the island was once used by the Dutch West India Company to quarantine slaves from Africa before they were allowed to arrive on mainland Curacao. The islands windward side is a graveyard for ships partly due to the islands low laying land and minimum vegetation which makes spotting the island from sea difficult. One of the wrecks we explore is the oil tanker "Maria Bianca" that ran aground in the late 80's and could not be salvaged or saved. The day starts well as we wake up to a beautiful view! However, while attempting to move the boat to a marina we realize our starboard engine has DIED and docking with one engine and the strong trade winds blowing is a little stressful! We officially clear customs and are ready to explore Grenada and are excited to spend hurricane season here. Do you want your very own Tula gear? Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit *Sponsors* Kemp Sails: https://kempsails.com/ Battleborn Batteries: https://battlebornbatteries.com/?afmc=kt&utm_campaign=kt&utm_source=leaddyno&utm_medium=affiliate Lasdrop Seals: https://lasdrop.com/ EasySea Winch Handles: https://easysea.org/?sca_ref=5531402.s0BZ4EpnhN Crewsaver: https://crewsaver.com/us Rocna: https://rocna.com/ *Timestamps* 00:00 Intro 01:13 Dodger update 02:17 Haul out time! 05:04 Anchor locker modifications 05:55 Unexpected guest 08:10 Anchor locker modifications continued 15:35 Antifoul prep time 17:29 Painting time 21:40 Free water and the final clean 23:05 Back to Teulu 26:44 Splash time #travel #sailing #boatlife #boat #yacht #adventure #marina #knot #anchor #compass #navigation #voyage #cruising #liveaboard #wanderlust #explore #nomad #globetrotter #bucketlist #destination #passport #circumnavigation #tinyhome #offgrid #offgridliving #discover #discovery #teulutribe #magicmind #mentalperformance #productivityhacks

The hardest part of sailing can sometimes be deciding when to go, and when to stay. Here we make the hard call to keep going. NO ONE wanted to keep sailing and we could all have used a rest, but when you have a good weather window, you need to take it! So that's just what we did. "And we took off like a rocket ship." EPISODE 50: Thank you all for watching and leaving great comments! We can't believe the growth this channel has had over the past three months and we are now approaching 60,000 subs for our 50th episode (up from 30k!). That's nearly twice the size in just three months, and from a significant base. Thank you, thank you, thank you all! PRE-COVID: Please note this video was shot just before covid became a thing. We would never delay meeting with customs today, but back then it wasn't a big deal. Island time... Ten years ago B.K. ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named "Honeymoon" halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Covid Free Australia. Videos for all of this to come! FAQ: More questions? What Cameras do we use? What's our budget? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions page on our website at: https://www.the-sailing-family.com/faq PLEASE COMMENT!: As a "family channel," we are required by Google to actively monitor all comments, but we still want to hear from you.

We're a young Aussie couple of sailors that are learning how to do it by just getting out there and doing it! Our steel 35ft Adams has allowed us to sail 800 nautical miles with only one stop in a marina! Living off the anchor and minimising costs so we can keep sailing is the ultimate goal.... but sometimes there's just no way to avoid it. A big southerly forecasted leaves us with no safe anchorage from the wind and swell...AND a failed swivel on passage results in losing our primary anchor at sea. We take advantage of our short time in the Mackay Marina before continuing our passage north up the East Coast of Queensland, Australia. We bear witness to a radio dispute between 2 vessels then have to pull ourselves away from the drama to set sail from Keswick to Mackay. There we discover why both of our bilge pumps failed on our last passage, Esky shows Josh how to perform an oil change and maintenance on our inboard, repair our headsail and all of the other tidbits that we don't get the time or grace for when we're out on the deep blue. We're not sure when our next stint in a marina will be, so we're making the most of every second! With a strong wind forecast for the remainder of this trip we try to keep a good distance from the coast of Colombia and its reputable bad acceleration zones. We hang on tight for a wild ride into Panama as we round Columbia and zoom down toward Colon for our planned Panama Canal transit. @ Minute 13:33 to answer some frequent questions we give a general run-through of our @Hydrovane (self steering system) to explain how we use it when sailing offshore, how we adjust the course, balance the sails , the vane settings and also how we lock our helms.
