The Tula Shop - http://tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ Some of our stanchion bases were leaking and it turned out that our stainless lifelines that we replaced a year ago probably aren’t as high quality stainless as they should be. We decided that instead if repairing and re-bedding the stanchion bases conventionally to borrow an idea that some racing boats are using as well as our friend Mike and make carbon fiber stanchions. We bed a fiberglass rod into the deck of our catamaran with a collar that a carbon tube will slip over as the stanchion. This will prevent any leaks from forming again, it will take some weight off the boat, and it will be a great experiment. Our next project will be to splice our own dyneema lifelines. Closing up the holes in our boat | Episode 179 Recently we sailed to the boatyard to get hauled out here in Curacao. It’s been 2 years since we had Saoirse out of the water, so we got to work right away looking into things that needed to be fixed. But once we started digging, we actually found something we were not expecting. Water in our keel. Fast forward through a bunch of drilling, grinding and sanding and now we need to get to work on closing up these big holes in our hull. This is turning out to be one of the biggest projects we’ve ever done on this boat. Matt and I are moving on to our first big construction project of our own, and that's our daggerboard cases. These are around 9 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide, and will sit on each side of our hull. Now that the weather is in the mid 50's (F) we have the perfect situation to be able to build them. Because each half required 8 layers of glass and around 130 oz of resin, we want to make sure we're familiar with the process, and do one test round on a miniature. Which turns out great!!! Then on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we go to do the real thing. And - everything was going great!!!! - until it was time to add the vacuum pump to suck out all the extra air and compress the glass together. That's when things cracked and fell apart on us. We've added a hinged mast-step and also temporary side stays and brackets in order for it to be raised and lowed quickly and efficiently. We went to the beach for some snorkeling. It was too rough and the water was stirred up so that was a bust. Took our Electroscan unit out and installed a holding tank for the forward head. Decided to go to Key West for awhile. At lunch (Poke bowl with Salmon), had a glass of wine, walked around, and relax. Our slip is great but there is a shoal directly behind it. Grounded there coming in because the channel marker was not where it should be. We got in the dinghy to explore the surroundings and try to measure how much backing distance Isabella would have before hitting the sand. Couldn't get the laser rangefinder to work so we tied a string to the boat and started measuring depth. Might have 60 feet (not much) to back out without grounding. Thank you for watching! Last episode we had an unexpected message from a friend inviting us for a week of sailing in Amalfi coast. We jumped at the chance… then jumped on the plane a few days later! We travelled for three days on cheap flights and finally arrived in Naples, where we proceeded to get thoroughly lost. Making our way through the more “interesting” tourist destinations, we finally arrived at our Airbnb in the heart of the old town of Naples. the following day we set off exploring Naples, stumbling across old churches, catacombs and down narrow laneways until it was finally time to head to the boat, a 48ft Beneteau. We left before sunset to our first destination of the trip, Procida. The next day we set off to Sorrento and we examined the boat more closely with Adam doing a walkthrough.
