Fishing Vessels - City Sailing Day Skipper We explain the lights and shapes on fishing boats to help you study for your RYA Day Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster Courses. This is all part of the City Sailing RYA Courses tutorial video to support our RYA Theory courses at city sailing. Fishing vessel lights and shapes are important for maritime safety, especially at night or in conditions of reduced visibility. These lights and shapes help other vessels determine the size, direction, and activity of the fishing vessel, so they can take appropriate action to avoid collisions. Here are some of the lights and shapes commonly used on fishing vessels: Lights: Red and white lights: Fishing vessels that are engaged in fishing, with gear deployed in the water, must display red and white lights. These lights are mounted on the vessel's mast and should be visible from all sides. All-around white light: Fishing vessels that are not engaged in fishing can display an all-around white light instead of the red and white lights. Shapes: Cone shape: Fishing vessels that are actively fishing and have gear in the water must display two cones with the apexes together. This shape indicates that other vessels should keep a safe distance and avoid crossing the fishing vessel's gear. Diamond shape: Fishing vessels that are not actively fishing or have gear stowed must display a diamond shape. This shape indicates that the fishing vessel is not restricted in its ability to maneuver. Ball shape: When fishing vessels are operating in close proximity, they may display a ball shape to indicate that they are not restricted in their ability to maneuver. This shape is commonly used when fishing vessels are working together in a fishing fleet. It's important to note that these lights and shapes are regulated by international maritime law, specifically the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). However we have totally miscalculated our diesel consumption. We seem to be using much more than expected. So we need to alter our route drastically and are forced to make a stop in Holland. Finally reaching the entrance of the Kiel Canal in Germany we find ourselves in a very hectic environment.. --- Sailing a Moody 47 from Madeira to the island of Bornholm in Denmark. Christian is doing the trip alone with help from friends and acquaintances along the way. The family joins on selected legs. I finished the 12 foot hull I've been working. It is intended to be paired with a different hull, but that hull isn't finished yet. I matched it with an older hull that I built some time ago. I need to add the sail and try it out in the water.

Angekommen in der Ägäis auf den nördlichen Sporaden. Kommt mit auf die Insel Skiathos, wo wir als begeiterte Flieger gleich als erstes zum spektakulären Flughafen pilgern. Hier landen die Flieger direkt über dem Kopf, quasi zum Greifen nahe. Auch sonst hat Skiathos einiges zu bieten. Quer über die Berge der Insel wandern wir durch den Zauberwald auf die andere Seite der Insel und zurück. Die Strecke ist dabei nicht die Herausforderung, sondern vielmehr die Temperatur. 35 Grad im Schatten misst das Thermometer! Die Anstrengung lohnt aber auf jeden Fall: wunderschöne Natur, sattes Grün und jede Menge Spuren des schweren Unwetters vom vergangenen Jahr. Arrived in the Aegean on the northern Sporades. Come with us to the island of Skiathos, where, as keen flyers, the first thing we do is make a pilgrimage to the spectacular airport. Here the planes land directly overhead, almost within reach. Skiathos also has a lot to offer in other respects. We hike across the island's mountains through the enchanted forest to the other side of the island and back. The route is not the challenge, but rather the temperature. The thermometer reads 35 degrees in the shade! But the effort is definitely worth it: beautiful nature, lush greenery and plenty of traces of last year's severe storm.

Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen.
