Learn how to install outboard stabilizer fins to your outboard motor. Why? Stabilizer fins increase stability, allow for better gas mileage (average of 40%), help the dinghy to quickly plane at lower RPM, increase top-end speed and keep the bow lower at all speeds. After some awesome sailing conditions last week, we come up against some less-than-awesome conditions as we run from a big low pressure system. We jammed our lives into an old station wagon and travelled across Australia to meet our new friend. We are steadily gaining more sailing experience as we go. We believe you can accomplish anything if you are passionate and dedicated to the cause. In this episode we are waiting for northerly winds to blow us down the coral coast. We are greeted with strong trade winds and decide to take it on and sail up the coast instead! We stop at Maureens cove on Hook island for a night and downwind cruise to Gloucester Island. We find an amazing restaurant with a bar called Montes which was perfect after a long day of Sailing. We also draw the competition winners from our last video. I know many of you are waiting to hear how we came through Hurricane IOTA here in San Andres, Colombia.. it was bit more adventure than we bargained for to say the least.. It's not every day you have a Category 5 hurricane less than 40 miles from your anchor. Luckily we have come through the worst of it almost unscathed.. the bad news is San Andres took a beating, and Providencia took a direct hit and from what we understand was completely wiped out, nothing left standing.. Not a great day, but happy to report we are still here. Will get back to you with a more detailed episode when time and internet allow. Stay safe everyone. There was a time when a 32m (100ft) yacht was a superyacht. While technically it probably still is, over two decades the bar has been raised much, much higher, as have the masts. The huge growth in rig sizes has been possible thanks to carbon fibre and there are some spectacular examples out there. At 86m (282ft) long Aquijo is the biggest performance sailing ketch in the world and her Southern Spar carbon masts are a staggering 91m (300ft) tall each! And while this makes for quite some spectacle, the even bigger question is how on earth do you step, maintain and handle such huge structures? PlanetSail went to Auckland to find out. While we were there we also looked at a fascinating project at the opposite end of the offshore scale and discovered how a re-rig for the Gunboat 66 performance cruising cat Slim transformed the boat's performance and handling and simplified the sail wardrobe too. CHAPTERS & LINKS 00:00 Intro 00:34 Why size matters 01:47 Aquijo’s captain explains 02:21 Southern Spars’ Mark Hauser provides perspective 03:13 Trimming Aquijo’s sail plan 09:06 Stepping a 91m mast 12:22 Gunboat 66 ‘Slim’ case study 18:58 The Future Facebook - @planetsail.org Website - www.planetsail.co.uk Linkedin - www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-sheahan Instagram - matthewsheahan
In this video we visit Somniun, our old O'day 272 sailboat, and give you guys an update on what Taylor, her new owner, is doing with her. Turns out, he's gutted the boat, dropped in an electric motor, and plans on using a Tesla battery to power it. He's also applying Coppercoat antifouling to the bottom and we offered to lend a hand. Coppercoat is a permanent, epoxy-based hard antifouling that uses suspended copper in the resin to ward off growth. It supposedly lasts over 10 year, so once applied, you don't have to keep pulling your sailboat and applying new antifouling every season. More information on Coppercoat can be found at the link below. http://coppercoat.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. This week we depart the Gold Coast Seaway ready to ride the northerly winds 100 nautical miles to the mouth of the Clarence River in New South Wales coastline. SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. **CORRECTION at 0:23 - Finish Grade's range is 2,000 miles at 7.0 knots.** Photos, 360’s, layout drawings and descriptions are available at https://www.JMYS.com and https://www.Selene55ForSale.com Finish Grade is hull 70 in the combined Selene 53/55 series. She is a widebody design, one of the most popular layouts among owner/operators. She was ordered to accomplish what is best for a cruising couple; two staterooms, stabilization, thrusters and even has a separate get home propulsion package. Her current owners have enjoyed and cruised the east coast and Bahamas for the past year and a half, making improvements and fine tuning to keep her fresh. Unfortunately, family issues are calling them back to shore and they are not sure when they can next take off so have made the decision to offer her for sale and let someone else take the helm and go off exploring. The Selene 55 is surely a head turner in any marina or anchorage. Her stout design and methodic craftsmanship that can be seen in each space aboard make for a highly sought after vessel. Finish Grade offers an incredible value in the long-range cruiser market. At the Miami International Boat Show I was able to get on board a Bali 54 Catamaran and take a complete tour and walk thru. Bali Catamarans are kown for their inovative designs like the rear 'garage door", forward pass thru door and huge fore deck with no trampoline! They do sacrifice some performance for those inovations. Want more info on the Bali 5.4? Live update: This video was recorded over the last couple of weeks. I’m with Ava in LA right now. The travel ban was announced a few hours after I arrived here. I have no idea when I’ll be back in Denmark. All is up in the air right now. In this video I make a shaker style drawer front using a rail and style router bit set and put together a simple DIY fuel polisher. *** Links *** Sail Life Shop: (Items are shipped from both the US and EU) https://saillifeshop.com/ Sail Life on Patreon: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnPatreon Sail Life on Instagram: http://instagram.com/madsdahlke Sail Life on Facebook: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnFacebook Sail Life on Twitter: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnTwitter Donations for the sandpaper fund: https://www.paypal.me/saillife
A quick update on my osmosis repair. What looked like gelcoat blistering, to begin with, turned out to also include (very) minor damage to the hull laminate. Come join me as I search for leaks! There is water in my bilge and I want to find the leaks. Last but not least a quick sneak peak at my new Victron Energy Phoenix Charger 12/50
all ELECTRIC sailboat motor range test and Bahamas grocery shopping while sailing to Marsh Harbor we didn't have enough wind to continue to sail, so we decided no better time than now to test the range of our electric motor and share the results. So many of you have been asking, if we have missed anything be sure to comment below your questions. We are heading south to Eleuthera and Exumas, so we decided Marsh Harbor is a great place to reprovision before leaving. We take the scenic route there. And stock up on all sorts of Keto goods. hope you enjoy this episode! big love, beau, brandy, and our salty dog, oona If you would like even MORE content or would like to support our video production, consider becoming a patron here: https://www.patreon.com/beauandbrandy facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsaoirse instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beauandbrandy Music: Dreamers Of The Shore - Volcan Peaks Against A Paler Sun - Hushed Fumes - [ocean jams] High Altitude 3 - Jack Elphick Magnetic Fields - Tomas Skyldeberg Love For The Ocean - Martin Hall

We’ve toured ALOT of trawlers… but not one like this! Magoo is a 2004 DeFever 45 Pilothouse, and she was BUILT to handle rough seas with comfort and style. How do we know? Her owner piloted her through 11-foot swells off the coast of Oregon as he brought her home to Southern California. In this episode he shares that harrowing experience, plus gives us the grand tour of of this amazing trawler! 🔴 Subscribe for more trawler fun and adventures aboard Sea Y’all! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNlLYqTXZbQn6iZHXC3aGvw ✅ Share this video with a fellow boat lover! https://youtu.be/AspXL5pQueY LET’S GET SOCIAL! 📸 Instagram: @TheSeaYallLife 👥 Facebook: @TheSeaYallLife 🍍 Website: www.TheSeaYallLife.com
The mast step is where the mast stands on the boat. This can occur on the deck (Deck Stepped) or on the keel (Keel Stepped). This simple difference of where the mast step is located can have huge implications on how the mast will behave on the boat. This video will discuss the differences between the two and talk about which is best for a cruising boat and which is best for a racing yacht. I sail across the North Atlantic from Newfoundland to Ireland in early July 2022. I am very fortunate in my selection of wx window, as the passage is almost like a Trade Wind passage (except the cold and fog). I discuss the issues of "seaworthiness" and the pros and cons of removeable forestays. I ask whether one should motor through a low wind zone, or sit it out. The passage took 13 days.
In this episode we leave Shelter Bay, Panama, to sail 900 miles to the Roatan, which is in the Bay islands of Honduras. The corner before the bay islands is renown pirate territory, and extreme caution must be taken when sailing in these waters. There have been numerous attacks in the area, and it is advised that boats give Honduras a very wide berth, which is what we do to avoid an attack... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We are getting very close to "finishing" the cabin...at least to the point where we can use it for weekend getaways, or longer! On this trip (1/17/15), we took the recommendations of two subscribers and installed a heat shield behind the wood stove. We also trimmed out the cabin's 4 windows, and built a "shooting table," which for now, we will use for a makeshift kitchen table.
