Annual maintenance prior to heading back to Caribbean. Changing skin fittings, new dinghy, adding vinyl stripes, changing hoses and faucets... and much much more. Early October, following our 4 months break from the boat, we travelled from our home in Europe back to Cloudy Bay in the Chesapeake. Before setting off southwards we had quite a list of maintenance and upgrades to do, given we may not get another good chance before New Zealand. The list included vinyl covering the blue strips, changing thru-hulls and hoses, bottoms painting, propeller & bow thruster service and rebuilding the hydraulic sail furling motors. A lot of the tasks were buying more spare parts, a Sailrite sewing machine and of course the usual unexpected purchases like a new dinghy and a replacement PC. Likewise, on the maintenance there were several unplanned things like changing the galley faucet, which became a monumental task for something so simple. And finally, food stocking up for our journey to Panama. It ended up taking us 6 very full weeks before we finally bid farewell to our Herrington friends, just as winter weather arrived. 11 Oct - 20 Nov 2019

It's about time we get to work restoring our rusty keel back to better than new. Cast Iron keels just want to rust, and ours is no different. After a much needed media blasting we get to work with silica and epoxy filling in the pitting before lathering on a nice epoxy barrier coat. We're counting the days before the keel and boat are ready for a reunion! What a week!! We decided to take a week off the boat yard and fly to the United States to visit the Miami Boat Show. We didn't know exact what to expect from the trip. What we knew was that somehow we needed to come back with 13 rope clutches so we could properly install our new mast. Well, in the end the trip was a lot more than just buying clutches. What an experience!! If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. Are you curious? Don't forget to subscribe and join us every Monday for a new episode!! A special thanks for everyone that made our week so special: Wiley Corbett III, Propspeed, Battle Born, our Patreons and everybody that took the time to chat with us. ____________________________________________________ Support our series: http://www.patreon.com/oddlifecrafting (Become a Patreon to get instant access to behind the scenes, extra pictures, perks, and even more) or you can donate through PayPal using: eduardocassol@gmail.com _______________________________________ Check our products on our online store: https://teespring.com/stores/odd-life-crafting-store OUR GEAR: Main camera: (SONY A6500) https://amzn.to/2KDqjdT GoPro hero 7: https://amzn.to/2KEma9r Rode Video Mic Pro: https://amzn.to/2z4plRm Main lenses: https://amzn.to/2KS6yy9 Lenses for detail: https://amzn.to/2ZcKaEG Small Tripod: https://amzn.to/2HdM8ih Big tripod: https://amzn.to/2KEi29G Tripod video head: https://amzn.to/2ZfDN7C Musics on this episode: 01 - Dogs Cats - Rex Banner 02 - Madness Instrumental Version - Ben Noble 03 - Missing You Instrumental Version - King Oak Join Arlist using our affiliated link and get 2 extra months for free: https://artlist.io/artlist-70446/?artlist_aid=OddLifeCrafting_407&utm_source=affiliate_p&utm_medium=OddLifeCrafting_407&utm_campaign=OddLifeCrafting_407 You can also get images to use in your videos: https://artgrid.io/Artgrid-114820/?artlist_aid=OddLifeCrafting_407&utm_source=affiliate_p&utm_medium=OddLifeCrafting_407&utm_campaign=OddLifeCrafting_407 #MiamiBoatShow #sailboat

This educational video is suitable for everybody! Children aged 3-12 years old. Also adults and teenagers! We came across hundreds of Star Fish in the San Blas Islands, and just had to find out more about them. Here are the facts we found. Did you know Starfish is not their correct name? They should be called Sea Stars, as they do not have gills, scales, or fins like fish do. So they are not classified as fish. They are related to sand dollars and sea urchins, we saw lots of Sand Dollars and Sea Urchins in the same area, but not nearly as many as the Sea stars. They have no brain or blood. They use filtered sea water to pump nutrients through their nervous system. Although it is possible for them to live for as long as they don’t get eaten, most survive for up to 35 years. There are around 2000 different species of sea stars. Most live in tropical areas, but you can also find them in cold waters or even polar regions. They cannot survive in fresh water. They can regenerate, which means if they loose an arm they can grow a new one. But this takes a long time. It can take up to a year for a new arm to grow back. Pedicellaria are small pincer organs that are part of the skin covering the top of starfish. They're able to grab and hold things that are touching the surface of their skin. These organs have two main purposes: to clean or remove unwanted objects from their skin, such as sand or barnacles, and to capture food that then can be transferred to their mouths. However, this is not the most common method that sea stars use to hunt for dinner. They are carnivores and eat inside out. When they capture their prey, they have tiny suction cups to grab ahold of their food. Then their stomach exits their mouth to digest the food, and reenters their body when they are done eating. Sea stars move using hundreds of tiny tube feet located on their underside. The tube feet are filled with seawater, which the sea star filters through the “bumps” on their top side. Suckers on the end of these feet can be used to grab prey, or stick themselves to rocks or other surfaces. They also may have some sharp spines between their tube feet, to help protect them from getting damaged. They can move quicker than you may think. Tube feet also help the sea star to hold its prey, including clams, oysters and mussels. They can weigh up to 5kgs Their predators include certain fish species, sharks, manta rays and even other starfish! To help defend themselves they have evolved several effective defence mechanisms. As well as the their tough, prickly, armour-like skin, some have striking colours that camouflage them amongst plants and coral, or scare off potential attackers. If under attack some sea stars will even shed an arm in order to escape. Part of the skin covering starfish's topsides is made up of dermal branchiae. These are gill-like formations that are used to absorb oxygen from the water. Like most animals, their bodies require oxygen to function properly, but it's harder to get hold of when you're an aquatic organism. Essentially, dermal branchiae act like lungs and allow these creatures to breathe underwater. We loved seeing and learning about sea stars. Remember please don’t pick one up if you see it, as you may hurt it or put it in danger.

This year, as details of a brutal weather forecast started to sink in, the mood on the dock swung as tension began to build. The 3,500 mile race to Guadeloupe was going to be tough; boat busting, strength sapping tough. After a perfect drag racing start, the big winds and huge waves swept in. Boats broke and skippers retired, yet some pushed on through. We tell the story. @Lost_Lauryn is probably the most beautiful sailing on youtube today! We have engine problems as soon as we pull up anchor at Cape May and we are drifting with the wind and current. I take quick action to get the motor started and then we sail 40 miles up the New Jersey Coast to Atlantic City. We get a dock there and head to the boardwalk! Its a fun place. Then we head to the pier and take a ride on the ferris wheel and even a helicopter ride! Then Lauryn puts on her bikini and hea head to the pool! wow does she look good! When we take the time to explore Haiti's true roots, we realize how its unique natural elements can be the highlight of this country's future. Instead of focusing on the ugly and the problem, we should let its beauty shine, and focus on the solution. I strongly believe that eco-tourism can be a game changer here. Thank you Nathalie and Haiti Roots, for taking us along to one of Haiti's most beautiful sceneries. And if you do visit my beautiful country, make sure you get in touch with Nathalie and Haiti Roots. We depart Fiji with our buddy boats Zatara and Nadine, destined for Australia. We can't seem to shake that Z-Crew, Santa finds our red boat in the middle of the ocean, and we find out who wins the fishing contest. Dive in to find out! OUR ROUTE: We departed the Boston area of the United States and sailed south to the Caribbean and then west through the Panama Canal. We have dealt with massive repairs in the South Pacific, the Coronavirus lock down in New Zealand, a Category 5 Cyclone in Fiji, and now we are cruising in Australia. OUR PAST: You may remember us as "SV Honeymoon?" Ten years ago ("before kids"), we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences via YouTube and, by happenstance, created one of the very first "sailing channels." We also realized what an incredible experience we were having and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with kids. FAQ: More questions? Yey!! The moment has arrived! We are assembling our mast!! We are soooo happy!! What we couldn't imagine is the amount of decisions we need to make in every single step of the process. But, slowly it's gaining shape and our boat is almost looking like a sailboat again. 😍⛵️ We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Before we found our dream boat we had another cool project: we were building our Tiny Shipping Container House by ourselves, without any prior experience to be our land base in our hometown, Florianópolis (Brazil). 2019 saw France experience its hottest June since records began. The French media dubbed it "an extreme weather event" a "killer heatwave" & warned people to stay indoors. We however had no choice than to motor through it and try to find some respite from the ever increasing temperatures on our boat. The conditions are insane and with no AC, we are suffering. With no prospect of cooling down, we make a break for the Atlantic ocean and try and cover as many miles as possible. Hope you enjoy the episode! It's on to the port side Garboard! We wanted to show a little bit more detail on what goes into installing these big planks. It can be a little bit of a fight to get them to fit just right. This one also had a little imperfection that needed to be dealt with before installation. We have some pretty amazing lumber to choose from in our piles, but there isn't always the perfect piece for the job. There happened to be one small knot in this garboard plank that we didn't want to include. To get rid of this, Steve cut it out and fit in a graving piece in it's place. With that fixed and the plank ready to be bolted on, we ran up a bit short on time as the 2019 WoodenBoat Show was that weekend. We took a couple days break and spent some time with friends around boats. We also attended talks by two of our friends. Andrew Guest who is restoring Rosalind (https://www.patreon.com/restoringrosalind). We mentioned him previously when he helped us pick up a Bridgeport milling machine and Seneca Falls metal lathe that were donated to us, and we sent him home with Victoria's old diesel for Rosalind. We also attended Sailcargo's talk by our friend Danielle Doggett (Director of Sailcargo). If you haven't heard of them, you should check them out. They are building a 148ft schooner in Costa Rica to use as a sail cargo ship along routes up and down the west coast of the Americas. Get more information here: https://www.sailcargo.org/ And if you are interested in supporting, they are looking for investors! We are steadily moving forward in the planking process. Next up will be the broadstrakes and as we move up there will be a couple more things to tackle before we can finish the planking process. Stay tuned and thank you for all the support! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Tom recalls the worst storm experience of his life, many years ago in the North Atlantic in a 32ft boat with his wife. Untie The Lines is BACK! We are starting Season 3 with the preparations for crossing the Panama Canal into the Pacific! I hope to see you all on board again for all the exciting adventures coming up in this season. This was more than due: new solar panels for Karl. I had already purrchased them in Mexico but now it was finally time to install them. What a treat to have a floating work shop anchored right next to me with a skilled friend that knows how to weld upside down. But see yourself! As we steam in Arabella's frames we have now reached the aft section of the build and need to cut the rabbet up the sides of the stern posts to determine where our frame sockets should land. Once cut we spend a day steaming in frames with a couple snags along the way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

A lot of people wondered how I did my droneshots from my "Solo sailing to Shetland" trilogy videoes. Here is how I do it :) I fly it and steer it from my boat. The easy part is lift off, the hard part is landing. I would not recomend doing this from a boat before you have sufficient training on land. Then try it on flat water, then later in waves. In waves just the slightest mismanouver can result in losing the drone, so its all on your own risk! Anyway, if you have any questions, ask in the commentfield below! :) T-shirts and merch: https://shop.spreadshirt.no/nbjs-factory Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Also check out my other channel for other stuff than sailing: https://www.youtube.com/user/erikaanderaa

The Indian Ocean is a very special place, unlike any other Delos has sailed so far. Because of this we decided to head back east from Cape Town, against the wind and waves, to spend another season in this amazing place. I wanted to share this video that our incredibly talented crew Kiril Dobrev worked on while crewing on Delos. If you like this editing style be sure to check out his channel at youtube.com/kirildobrev .

http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2013/04/getting-tough-stains-out-of-gel-coat/ For more how to videos, visit www.boats.com. Do you want your boat gel coat to glitter in the sunlight? Of course you do. We take pride in how our boats look, and we want them to look good. But with age and use, just about every boat out there is going to get stains and discoloration in the gel coat. Step number one is getting off the easy stuff with some elbow grease. In fact, you can watch our video on How to Restore Faded Gel Coat on a Boat if that's a problem with yours. But sometimes, you face really tough stains. Regular spray on cleaner may get up most of the dirt, but uh-oh, I think I just found one of those stains. This is a rust stain, and they can be the toughest to get out. I need some help. Chris! Chris Breeden, Service Manager/Yamaha Master Tech: Lenny, for tough rust stains you're going to need to use an acid-based cleaner. Lenny: Why are you wearing gloves? Chris: Well, this is some pretty nasty stuff. You don't want to get it on your skin and you don't want to breathe the fumes. Lenny: Now one of the things I've been told is that after using an acid-based cleaner, you need to rinse it away thoroughly. Chris: Absolutely, or it can discolor the gel coat and pit metals. Alright - we have the stain off, and now we need to put a good coat of wax on there. Lenny: That's right, because that acid strips away all the wax, doesn't it? Chris: Definitely. Lenny: There we go. Now, she's gleaming from stem to stern. If your boat has some tough gel coat stains, don't let them ruin your day.

We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. More about us: 👉 About us + Q&A https://youtu.be/TldDlohjwTs 👉 our website with more info about the project http://www.sailingyaba.com 💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Beto and Luiz.
