We are learning so much from the planking process. After having cut and installed the garboard planks, we are now on to the first broadstrakes. These next couple of planks are going on right after the garboard and are also oak and need to be pretty sturdy. As these planks are also still fairly low on the boat, we are still dealing with the stiffness of the bottom of the frames and the bronze floor timbers. This makes these planks, also a bit of a challenge to instal. Not only that, but in contrast to the garboard plank, we do not have the 90 degree angle of the rabbet on the bottom side of the plank. This means that we need to match the angle where the top of the garboard (and all subsequent planks) meet the frames. This is a constantly changing bevel all the way down the boat. To cut this bevel quickly and efficiently, we borrowed a tip from a shipwright ;) (Thanks Lou!). We modified a skilsaw to be able to cut and compound changing bevel with the use of a clamp screw to adjust the angle of the cut as the saw is running. This has been a fantastic way to cut this bevel and has taken so much time out of the process of fitting the planks. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought is sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive and we need to lift it onto the dry ASAP to fix what is needed and start our refit. In this episode we are finally heading south on board of our leaky boat! We navigated approximately 250 nautical miles with water filling our bilge besides some other minor set backs. It was a bumpy ride with some fortunate and some unfortunate events. We got a little scared at moments but now we are happy we have a richer story to tell, because, spoiler alert: at the end things worked out well enough for us to continue telling our story. There is a fine art to planking a boat and we certainly are learning that by putting on Arabella's Garboard. This is one of the hardest planks to fit, but that just means it is a perfect test for us to learn the intricacies of planking. Arabella is going to have oak garboards and broadstrakes before we switch over to cedar for most of the rest of her planking. Not only are these bottom strakes a bit difficult to fit, but the fact that they are thick oak boards just makes it that much more challenging. We needed all the clamps we could muster and a few tricks along the way. Including getting some car jacks in play. In the end, the garboard bent into place and we are very happy with how it fit. This is going to be one solid plank and give us some serious confidence out on the ocean going through storms. Click here... http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are preparing our yacht for blue water cruising. We prepare the deck for a fresh coat of non-skid using KiwiGrip. Bonita sands the deck and then cleans it using water and then acetone. Yosh then re-seals the fittings with new silicone. We primer around the outside of the deck and get stuck into applying the kiwi grip. The product is a yoghurt like consistancy, we are a little nervous at first to use it but after a practice run on cardboard, soon find our rhythm. We roll out the KiwiGrip and wait 3 days for it to dry hard. We take off the dodger and Bonita sews on a new zip. Yosh completes the fibreglassing job on the aft, port side to strengthen our davits. We have a rainy few days which allows us to check for leaks. Yosh pulls up the staircase to inspect the bilge underneath. We get some new toys and give an update on our upcoming voyage. Skippertraining ist die ganzheitliche Vorbereitung auf das Führen von Yachten und beinhaltet mehr als Hafenmanöver. Ziel des Trainings ist der Gewinn an Erfahrung, Kompetenz und der sichere Umgang mit der Yacht auch in schwierigen Situationen, wie z.B. bei einer Nachtfahrt oder bei Notmanövern. Skippertraining ist Bordpraxis in ständig wechselnden Rollen und erfordert, sich selbst und die Crew auf Manöver vorzubereiten, ruhig und souverän zu führen und sich an der Vorleine, am Fender oder am Ruder führen zu lassen. Alle Manöver werden zwischen Trainer und Crew ausgewertet und dabei auch die eigene Rolle reflektiert.
