I have for years wondered how to get up my mast alone, without bathering anyone winching me. It is important when you do solo sailing, to have access to all parts of the boat, especially the mast if something gets loose or need fixing up there. I finnaly caught up with a methode called "sit-climbing", using professional climbing gear to get up the boats own halyard. It was incredibly easy, even for me with my 110 kg bodyweight! All you need is a climbing harness, a couple of shackles, a grigri (first version), and a accender/jumar with a foot strap. For safety you also need to put up a security line to a second halyard. Aligning has still been a little tough, and that's because our bridge deck keeps flexing in opposite ways. They're coated in a clear packing tape, which will make them much easier to use once the resin dries. We are now sailing new territory in the Pacific Coast of Mexico. On this episode, we are getting closer to Palm trees and further away from cactus trees. Warren finishes up some of the necessary projects and issues aboard VA before we can leave Mazatlán and continue our southern hop to Puerto Vallarta. This time of year also calls for the big migration of Humpback whales from Alaska down the coast of Baja into Mexico, and we happen to be sailing in the middle of it all. After a great sailing season in the Caribbean, s/v Cloudy bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) leaves Antigua and heads off to east coast USA, out of the hurricane zone. Our passage from Charleston SC to Wilmington NC was an easy smooth over night sail... for the most part. We did get hit by (our first) rain storm. Uma sails reefed and trimmed, she really was a champ, and this wet ride became the smoothest, most comfortable ride since we left Fort Pierce. The next day, we sailed up the Cape Fear river for 20 miles to enjoy a beautiful sunset. My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharing my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time. - Where are you now? One of the great parts of boatbuilding (or maybe the hardest part about learning boatbuilding?!) is that there are many different ways to do things. And they are all correct! Steaming in Arabella's frames is a good example of this. All her framing so far has been steamed in after we have cut pockets in the centerline to hold the butt ends of the frames. At this point in the planking process, we have come up to a point in the bow that had a wide section missing a pair of frames due to the mast step being in the way. We needed something to attach the planking to and keep it from rising up, so the only logical thing to do was to steam in the frames that belonged there. The process of steaming these frames, is exactly the same as all the rest except for the fact that they do not get pocketed into the centerline. These frames have their butt ends shaped to fit between the planking and the centerline. They are then screwed in through the planking and into the centerline to be held in place as we bend them to shape. Since we only had two of these to do, we didn't want to light up the giant steam box we have. This would be a waste of wood and time to get all that water up to a boil for just two frames. So, we built a small steam box out of a length of PVC pipe.
