WE DID IT! We're proud to say we reassembled the interior in the same amount of time that it took to disassemble it! We're pushing towards becoming a sailboat again and turning this now floating boat into our home. Every panel, screw, bolt feels like a win and we're loving it. Some small wins this week - we found the engine key and got it to start...finally. Took a combination of cleaning all the connections, topping off the batteries, and tapping on the starter solenoid (probably all that was really needed after sitting so long). Also we now have running water! The zip-tied relay trick is only so reliable and will need to be replaced asap because if you even look at it wrong it disconnects. Just begging to start smoking or something sketchy. Road tripping across Australia to see as many friends and family as we can! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we leave our humble Nandji home in the safe hands of the marina in Krabi, Thailand and head home to Australia for Christmas. This was a very exciting trip for us as Yosh had not been back to Australia since sailing out of the Gold Coast seaway back in July 2017 and Bonita only returning once over a year ago for health reasons. To be heading home for Christmas and seeing friends and family was truly an awesome experience for us. We road trip across Australia, from land to sea and visit Yosh's family around the state of South Australia. We visit the remote Kangaroo island and then drive 900km across the state to visit Yosh's little bro and spend Christmas at his mums place. Yosh gets busy with some sheep work, helping out his little brother, we go fishing out in the boat and check out all the animals on Kangaroo island! With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji girl around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! This is the tour you have been waiting to see for over TWO YEARS now!! Elements of Life is a 1983 Trisalu 37 aluminum cutter, that was build in Quebec. We purchased her in the fall of 2014, after she'd been sitting abandoned in a boat yard in Florida for over 10 years. After sailing from the Azores, where we had been sitting when we bought her, we were able to see her for the first time in person in 2015, and moved her from storage to a work yard to begin a complete refit. Over the course of 2.5 years, we stripped this boat down to bare frames, and built her back out again, with the vision of her being the perfect cruising boat. Everything in this boat, including the overhead, ceiling, floors, and all of the furniture, was built by the two of us. Fun bonus, we lived on the boat during the entire refit process. She is currently set up as the perfect cruising boat for a couple, with a good sized galley, two main seating areas, a quarter berth (which we use for storage) and a murphy style bed for the v-berth which folds down into the forward salon as a queen size bed. So far we have sailed her through the Caribbean, across the Atlantic Ocean, spent a wonderful 9 months with her in the Azores, and spent 2019 bringing her to the Arctic (via Norway) and down the coast of Scotland and England, where she is currently sitting. With the weather systems misbehaving it’s probably not the best summer for Faroe and Iceland. Instead there is a weather window to take me and ‘Talisker 1’ east and back to beautiful Norway. It was going to be a testing sail as we closed on the Norwegian coastline.

The end of the current metal work which comes with fabricating the bronze floors we are installing in Arabella is finally nearing its end. These structural members tie the frames to the centerline and whether they be wood or metal, are one of the most important parts of the build. We have put a lot of time and effort into fabricating these and are really excited to get to installing them in their home. The most complicated of these floor timbers are the ones in the stern that are going to be supporting the engine beds. The engine sits level with propeller shaft and therefore needs to be supported at that height (about 2 feet/ .6 m up from the keel timber) which meant for some tall and strong floor construction there. As the engine provides propulsion for the vessel, that force needs to be transferred into the hull as opposed to moving the engine. To transfer that energy, it is crucial to make sure the engine is securely connected to multiple frames (otherwise these could crack under the force). This is why the engine sits on engine beds that are connected to the frames via the floor timbers and connects 4 frame pairs together. These were a lot of fun to figure out and make but we are very much looking forward to installing these and getting back to some woodworking. Margarida takes a run on a huge sandbank and looks for shells and finds them in their 1000s although not quite what she was looking for. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. In this episode we finish preparing our new keel as well as some floor timbers to where the keel will be attached too. I'm removing it from the description. It started to leak very badly. I have ordered a Holly regulator ( Holly 12-804 1-4psi regulator: https://goo.gl/Q8wbKr) as a replacement. I'll update again after I've had a chance to review it. -- Franny We have Miss Lemon Drop back in the garage for a fuel pump replacement. You may remember that she pooped out on the way home and Heidi and I got her running again. The owner (Jerry) purchased a new pump “kit” with the pump, rod, spacer, and gaskets. I go through the installation of the pump, and also a check of the fuel pressure. That was a big surprise! At 5psi, it was twice what the carburetor specs. VW says to add a gasket or two to raise the pump and thereby limit the rod throw to lower the pressure. The problem with these aftermarket pumps is that if you go the route, you will have to grind the rod so much to get the pressure down, the flow will be too low to support the needs of the engine at running RPMs. The only real solution is to install a pressure regulator to meet the requirements of the float bowl needle and seat in the carburetor while still maintain adequate flow. Today we’re climbing one of the tallest mountains on the island for an epic view and we get sucked down the rabbit hole on the legendary Mt. Raemaru. One day I ran out of cash at a cafe and the lady behind the counter loaned me her scooter to go to the ATM. That would never happen in the USA. Then we met Dion & Marcelle. They made it their personal mission to make sure we had a killer time on their island. After a full tour of Raro, Marcelle took us to her favorite cafe for coffee and brunch then she gave us her car!!! Yea. Crazy right?!? First big adventure she told us to: Hike the legendary Raemaru trek up the mountain. The most famous mountain in all of the Cook Islands. It’s the first real trail we’ve seen since Mt. Quilotoa in Ecuador (watch it here: https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/epic-volcano-hiking-ecuador), and it’s definitely the most interactive trail we’ve ever hiked. From the QR code signs, to the hunt for red passion fruit and guava, and the rope assisted vertical ascent to the top…this hike is LEGIT!
