Yes this video is short, probably the shortest one we've done. BUT DON'T FEAR! The next six episodes are all LONG! Remember, uploading out in the Pacific is not always easy, so long episodes take longer to upload. STAY WITH US! It gets better!! We made it to American Samoa, and received the Dometic deep-freezer from the now-sunken catamaran Tanda Malaika. (To find out more about their tragic sailing accident, rescue, and personal journey, go to: www.adventuresofatribe.com.) We also found some great hidden treasures: a magnificent waterfall, fantastic bulk provisioning, and lots of fast food!! Happy Sailing! I love multihulls, and I love Sailing La Vagabonde, so I was probably just as excited as Riley when he announced they were getting a Rapido 60 trimaran, and just recently launched it in Viet Nam. But I’m also just a bit concerned they’ve bitten off more than they can chew, as I’ll explain in this video. Their last boat was an Outremer 45 Catamaran, which they sailed across the Atlantic several times, including once with Greta Thundberg. This was a great boat for Riley and Elayna, and introduced them and their huge audience to the wonderful world of multihull sailing. Through the years Riley has had the opportunity to sail on some great performance multihulls, which opened his eyes to the exceptional speeds they can achieve, so I wasn’t at all surprised that their next boat would be a Rapido 60. They just launched the Rapido and did a 600NM shakedown sail with the President of Rapido and a few other skilled crew. They encountered some of the expected teething problems with a new boat, like engine and electrical issues, but there were also some things that leave me concerned that this might be too much boat for them. This is a rare boat, and with that I'd argue that she's delightfully weird in that you just don't see designs quite like this in boats of this size and vintage. Tell me another 40' yacht from the 80s that incorporates a ketch rig, aft cockpit, pilothouse, huge galley, full beam aft cabin with an en-suite head, and a large forward cabin and second head? Combine that with a robust below the waterline fin keel and skeg-hung rudder. I'll wait. I think this is my new favorite 40' design from this timeframe. What do you think? This video is a followup to my initial unboxing, assembly, and preliminary review of the Central Machinery/Harbor Freight Sawmill. Unfortunately, in that video, we were overtaken by snow and subzero temperatures so our milling adventure was cut short. This video is the first "real lumber run" on this saw. Stay tuned for the saw modifications and setup on the new trailer!
We're getting the backbone assembly up... but there is so much to do before we can actually put it all together. We go through all of that in this video, along with a quick run through of the backbone actually going up! We'll go over everything in detail throughout the next couple of videos though. Making finhead bolts, drilling and lining things up before we bolted it all together, etc. We're getting there! And it's so exciting! If you are interested in the limited edition backbone assembly shirts you can buy one here: {Sorry T-shirt campaign has ended} --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. FREE ENERGY – 1000 Mile Hydro Generator SAILING Trial - On Luckyfish we are well on the path to supplying all our energy needs, on anchor or under sail, using renewable energy. With the installation of a hydrogenerator, we can now meet all our energy demands when passage making. At just 5 knots of boat speed the hydro gen produces the same amount of power as a good quality wind generator in 18 knots of apparent wind. Something we rarely see as we spend much of our time reaching or running. We estimate the unit produces about 0.2 knots of drag, or costs us about 5 nautical miles a day if we keep it immersed full time. In this video we look at our unique installation solution and the performance of the unit over a 1,000 mile sea-trial. We hope you enjoy, comment and question. And, do like, SHARE and subscribe if you want more! You can support our creations by becoming a PATRON, link below. You guys are AWESOME ! Hurricane Irma destroyed hundreds of boats, SV parlay being one of them, which sank on her port side and was deemed a constructive total loss. That's when I bought her for $150k at the start of 2018 and proceeded to spend the next couple of years rebuilding her. Now, we had an incredibly special moment when we showed the previous owner, Bob, how we had revived Parlay back to her former glory! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!! SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Selene 43 Trawler - MISTY PEARL is an ideal trawler to provide you access to the cruising lifestyle. She is a veteran of both the Great Loop and the Down East Circle. The 15th hull in the series, Misty Pearl benefits from extensive updating as she continues her cruising pedigree. She is absolutely ready to go wherever your cruising plans might take you. INDEX: Cockpit: 1:13 Saloon: 2:27 Galley: 3:20 Pilothouse: 3:59 Foredeck: 5:41 Boat Deck: 6:23 Flybridge: 7:12 Lower Level: 8:05 Engine Room: 9:48 Misty Pearl is an excellent example of the collaborative efforts of Ted Hood and Howard Chen when they set out to build long range live aboard trawlers that combine highly desirable features such as a Portuguese bridge and walk around decks with high end finishes, which make Misty Pearl as comfortable to live aboard as she is to cruise and dock. High bulwarks around the deck add safety and convenience to her common sense design. As she has demonstrated, she is a “Go Anywhere” vessel, comfortable at sea and with the range to cross oceans. Cockpit: The cockpit is a wonderful place to spend time. There is plenty of shade from the full boat deck above and you can easily move from either side up to the raised pilothouse. Large doors on either side of the cockpit make boarding Misty Pearl safe and easy. Under the cockpit decking is the lazarette hatch with provides access to a large storage area, steering components and the aft freshwater tank. There is also a transom shower which can be raised to use on the swim platform or in the cockpit. The Grunert Freezer has been decommissioned. Saloon: A Diamond SeaGlaze Dutch door leads into the saloon which has an L shaped leather settee to port with storage underneath. There is an adjustable table which raises and lowers as well as folds for dining and socializing. The entertainment center to starboard contains a newly installed Bluetooth-compatible Clarion Stereo and a 36” flat-screen TV. Galley: Moving forward on the same level as the saloon is an efficient galley with a full range of built in appliances including a Vitrifrigo 110V/12V refrigerator/freezer (new 2018), a Seaward Princess three-burner electric stove and oven with broiler and a GE Profile microwave oven with exhaust fan. There is an ample amount of workspace on the beautiful wrap around Corian countertops. Continuing forward to the starboard of the galley are stairs leading to the raised pilothouse. Stairs to the port side of the galley lead to the stateroom companionway with engine room access. Pilothouse: The Pilothouse is accessed by a few steps to starboard of the Galley. As you enter the Pilothouse you notice a full suite of Garmin electronics complete with touchscreen control and with all chart software up to date. At the helm you will find joystick control for both bow and stern thrusters making docking a controlled process. There are also controls for the anchor windlass which means that single handling this boat is not a problem. Well laid out electrical panels are easily accessible as are the controls for the generator, inverter and air conditioning systems. Misty Pearl truly is a fabulous vessel which will impress you with her stabilized ride while providing ease of service and ownership. She is a proven passage maker built by a manufacturer who has continually evolved in their ability to bring together quality materials, a practical and efficient design and beautiful fit and finish into a package that you will appreciate and take great pride in owning. You can read all about the cruising accomplishments of the Selene 43 online and by studying magazine reviews and owner blogs. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste. This week we realize that fixing our outboard engine might be more complicated than we originally thought, so we spend days researching how to proceed. Then when we attempt to install our Furlex roller furling unit from Selden, we realize that we messed up on some integral measurements which will set us back yet again. Amidst the frustration of boat projects, we attempt to look on the bright side, but it’s hard not to get down on ourselves. Atticus is a 30 foot Allied Seawind Ketch built by Thomas Gillmer in 1963. We bought Atticus for $5000 and have been slowly improving her and living aboard full time for the last 6 years. This week we replace our old stainless steel steering cables with new dyneema line, which means having to do quite a bit of splicing! As we replace the cable and start to tension it, we find that the hull is actually cracked where the steering cable sheaves are, due to the extreme force on them when the bulkheads cracked and the boat bent out of shape! The Hans Christian 33 and 41 are two of my all-time favorite boats because they are pure. They are true heavy-displacement cruising vessels and make no compromises. They were expertly designed, built, and laid out for a cruising couple or small family, and will take you ANYWHERE in comfort and safety. The charm of the old school woodwork, bronze fixtures, and "shippy" lines make this boat truly unique. Hans Christians hold their value, and are frequently listed and sold for over 100,000 USD when they're in good shape. At only $59,900, this one needs a bit of work, but for the right buyer not afraid of some DIY, they could have a beautiful and valuable go-anywhere cruiser after a refit. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you're interested and would like more information, the contact info for Norm, the broker, is listed below: 813-495-0370 norm.yachtsales@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthel... In this video we'll look at some examples that represent real value - the maximum bang for your buck - in a number of popular makes and models. We'll look at Sun Tracker pontoons, Cypress Cay, and Aqua Patio, and see where some of their specific models represent real value. Wow, this was the longest solo sail I have ever done so far. Not much for many, but for me, these 600+ nautical miles of solo sailing were quite the accomplishment for myself. Things went rather smooth, no engine failures, only a small tear in my sail when I took off. What was most scary, was a nasty waterspout that formed really close to Karl and me. And the constant rain and uncountable number of squalls were a bit annoying, too. But if you are a sailor yourself, then you know that EVERYTHING that was annoying or scary during a passage miraciously dissapears from your memory once you arrive safely in the anchorage. And you cannot wait for the next time to head out. Well, this was the GRAN FINALE of UNTIE THE LINES Season 2 :). I hope you enjoyed it and that you will stay tuned for Season 3 in 2017! Merry xmas to all of you and may 2017 be full of adventure and joy for you! This week we continue our sail north to Maine. We transit the Cape Cod canal at a whopping 10 knots, and Desiree has a heck of a time steering the boat, then nigh falls and Gio experiences her first night watch, and finally we’re thrown into the middle of a foggy haze and a minefield of lobster traps as we attempt to enter our final destination. All in all, it’s a roller-coaster of a passage!
