This Gozzard 36 is similarly priced, but in much better shape than the last one in Florida I toured, and it was interesting to be able to compare the two! The boat is solidly built with a true cutter rig with the mast stepped well aft in the boat. Bob Perry says, "This won't win you any races, but it is photogenic and can be fast on a reach." Then we are at the final chapter 5, sailing the last miles towards back home to Haugesund. On my way I visited the beatiful island of Foula, west of Shetland before crossing the North Sea back home again. Its been together a 2400 NM trip for a 5 weeks sail. This week on Kawai we leave Preveza and navigate through Lefkas canal. We are the last in line as we enter the 3.5 mile canal and enjoy watching the locals fishing on the banks of the canal. We enjoy a nice downwind sail to our next anchorage, Vlikho Bay. This large bay is full of liveaboards and is well protected from the wind and swell. We use the time to freshen up, enjoy some local hospitality however can't swim due to the large jellyfish population in the bay. The next destination is Ithaca. We get some great winds and sail the 20nm, with the wind slightly ahead of the beam, Kawai loves this wind angle and we love this sail. Ithaca is my favourite Greek Island and has amazing beaches, lush vegetation and some stunning anchorages. We visit Sarakiniko Beach, Filiatro Beach, Tilemakos Beach and Skhoinos Beach. We spend most of our time in Filiatro Bay, enjoy swimming, hiking, exploring and cleaning the local beaches. Unfortunately the beaches have a variety of litter so we spend a couple of hours returning them to their natural beauty. Our time at Filiatro comes to an end as the weather takes a turn for the worse and we sail to the sheltered bay of Vathy, the main harbour in Ithaca. About us: Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Here's a complete install video of our new Cape Horn Wind Vane http://capehorn.com/ We probably should have gone over this in the video. We've spent the last two years, researching and looking into pretty much every brand of vane out there. I think our decision boils down to 3 main points. 1: Aesthetics. We LOVE how clean and well designed the Cape Horn is. No external lines, no extra pipes and hardware hanging off the back. It just looks GOOD and functions even better. Sure, that means it takes a bit longer to instal, but, you only have to install it once! Each unit is custom made to fit your boat like a well tailored suit. They can adapt them to mount on any transom in almost any position. 2: No external rudder. There is a running myth, that if you have a vane with it's own rudder that it can act as a "back up" if your main rudder is ever damaged. But, to us, that logic doesn't hold. Because unless the vane rudder is removed when your main one is damaged, it will most likely get damaged as well. Our rudder has a full skeg, and several is a full foot or two above the keel, so we would have to drift backwards into a cliff in order for it to be damaged. In which case the wind vane would be gone too! 3: Others reviews. We've read many blogs, forums, comments, and listened to people talk about their own wind vane experience, and we've heard many people complain about how their wind vane functions. "It's picky", "it only works in certain conditions", "it's hard to adjust or trim properly". Most of the boats we've talked to who have a vane installed never seem to use it, because an electronic pilot is so much "easier". Now, we haven't seen as many Cape Horns out there, but the few people we've talked to, and the many comments we've read about them, not one complaint or trouble with them. That to us may have been the most important factor in our decision. They just seem to WORK! If your sails a well balance and trimmed, the Cape Horn will steer you though anything. A very sad day for all of us in the rally as one of our Captains, Tim Brewer of 'Q4' passes away very suddenly during our Valentine's Day celebrations in the San Blas Islands of Panama. I hope we can all learn something from this day in how to be better prepared for when the worst happens... even simple things like knowing how to properly operate a VHF radio for use in emergencies, knowing where first aid kit is and how to use it, initiating first aid and/or CPR, and being able to relay an accurate GPS position can all make the difference between life and death when every moment counts.
