We hummed along at 6kts with just the main out, and it was magic. Turning off the engine and feeling the boat lean into the wind...amazing. Thank you all for your support along the way. We have a lot to learn and made many mistakes on this project - and many even on this first sail! But that's ok and honestly the way we like it. Should we have done the lines different, taken off rings, buttoned up the enclosure better, etc. Sure. But no regrets on today - absolutely amazing! It is time to start planking Arabella! This moment has been a long time coming and we are thrilled to be able to finally start this process. It does mean a bit of a learning curve though, so we had our friend Thad Danielson come back to the boat yard and help us through the process of marking out the starboard side garboard plank. The garboard plank is maybe the most important plank on the boat as it ties the frames down to the centerline. This is the place in the boat that is under some of the most strain. As the hull is buoyed up, the ballast and center line are trying to sink to the bottom of the ocean. Due to these two strains working against each other, many boats start to split right in this area and spring leaks. Therefore it is best to try to fit the largest and strongest garboard plank possible. In this episode we show our favourite way to remove the hair from a pig that requires minimal equipment or people to help. Some people skin their harvested pig in the mistaken belief that de-hairing is more difficult, but this introduces two major drawbacks. First, you are wasting a fantastic product if you discard the skin but worse still, a skinned pig carcass is incredibly slippery and hard to handle. Finally, leaving the skin intact provides a great barrier to food spoiling bacteria and meat dehydration. A quick little walk-through of our floating home. 'Camara' is an Ocean 80 that participated in a few of the Whitbread Round-The-World-Races back in the 80's. We salvaged her from the scrap heap back in 2015 and rebuilt/refitted her over the following 3 1/2 years without any outside labour and on a tight budget. We never had the time or budget to turn her into a 'superyacht' but our goal was all along to turn her into a comfortable cruising yacht. Having outgrown our last boat as we 'added' to the crew with two stowaways along the way, this was the perfect project boat for us to continue our dream of living a life afloat as a family. In order to sell our mast we needed to take all the winches off of it and we decided to give maintenance to all our winches. But we did it WRONG!! If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made.
