Tour of the motor catamaran Moon 60. International Multihull Show 2023, La Grande-Motte, France By Federico Maselli The Boat Show 2023
Steep waves with a short period can be the most uncomfortable conditions to drive in a boat so in this video we test the Prestige M48 in 1 - 2m of steep waves with a very short period between them. As I was spending the weekend in a Prestige 680 it was very surprising to discover the master cabin on this 50ft boat competes with the master on a 680! If you have Med cruising in mind this boat could be a very interesting option for you to consider! Caribbean too! Join me for this opportunistic test which came about thanks to the great team from Ancasta Marine in the Balearic Islands. After spending 4 days with Matt and his crew and understanding how well set up they are in this part of the world I would not hesitate to recommend speaking with these guys if Med cruising is on your bucket list! What an amazing destinaiton to escape the Southern Hemisphere winter and with a boat like this you have space and privacy for all your guests. Please Enjoy. Race pace intensity noticeably ramped up for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli on Monday as the Italians took to the waters off Cagliari in near-perfect conditions of flat water and sea-breeze to really start pushing tight manoeuvres and time-on-distance. After an initial foil data gathering exercise on straight-lines, the Chase Boats threw in the customary marks and created a short course with tight boundaries and placed the fully instrumented Chase Boat 1 on the course as opposition. This is a technique honed from AC36 in the lead up to the 2021 regatta that Philippe Presti, the team’s coach, perfected shadowing the AC75 and made major gains in boat positioning and handling as the Chase Boat puts the sailors under serious pressure. Out in Cagliari, and with six people onboard at times, the Chase Boat was pushing hard and demanding more and more from the team. Shannon Falcone, the on-water Operations Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli described the technique saying: “The racecourse is so small with the boundaries and everything and with Chase 1 you basically sail like you're sailing a boat, so you've got targets, true wind angles, you’ve got all the instrumentation onboard to sail as if you were sailing the race boat and in the manoeuvres you drop the speed so you're not gaining too much in the manoeuvres and so on and you just try to basically be on it. The good thing is I've got a great team - Max (Sirena) calling tactics you know Gilo (Nobili) navigating, Mickey calling relatives so just feels like you know we can really bring it to the boys and show them how it's done.” Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

With three seasons in one day, Cagliari was proving a tricky mistress from a weather perspective but it’s these kinds of days that wins you the America’s Cup. Training onboard the rapid-looking LEQ12 in light, fluky and patchy conditions, the Italians needed the assistance of the Chase Boat team to get flying in order to push through a light-weather test schedule where technique was rewarded. The premium on accurate flight control was high and Vittorio Bissaro, one of the ever-present members of the Luna Rossa Flight Control team on both the LEQ12 and AC40 spoke about a day where his concentration was firmly on “keeping the bow out of the water…and the rudder immersed.” Vittorio is perfectly placed to talk about the new wing and give a colourful and interesting assessment of the profile: “I wouldn’t say it’s easier” was how he concluded on that subject. When pushed about the various roles on the boat and what each person’s individual role is onboard, Vittorio was tight-lipped. These are crucial systems arrangements and the Itlainas are giving nothing away – quite rightly. Fascinating interview with one of the best Flight Controllers in this America’s Cup cycle. Section 41. Bow on with windward heel, there are few sights as good as seeing Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s beautiful LEQ12 barrelling upwind at breakneck speeds, but it was a tricky weather day today for the Italians in Cagliari with lighter winds either side of a sea breeze that called for different technique – one that they showed more than adept at handling. Hamish Wilcox the team sailing coach described the conditions saying: “Yeah it was tricky you know we had more than we expected for a while which was nice, the day didn't look too promising at all actually, there’s rain around so quite cold as you notice so the sea-breeze was really struggling to develop and in the end in fact I think we had something of a little push out of the clouds and some sort of shower and rain and then the breeze kind of eddied all the way into the Bay, so it was a lot of different things happening out there.” Section 41. Sir Ben Ainslie came back to Palma today to join the sailing team and thoroughly test through the new foil configurations on ‘T6’ the INEOS Britannia LEQ12 prototype testing platform. In a wide-ranging interview with the Recon Team, Ben gives his views on what he describes as this ‘critical period’ in the America’s Cup cycle and highlights some of the interesting foil and technical developments as teams zero-in on their design thinking for the one-build AC75s that will shortly go into production worldwide in the coming few weeks. Ben also offers his unique perspective on the British challenge, very much reiterating the point that this period is one for test and analysis as was shown on the water today as he and Giles Scott pushed the new foil through a myriad of trim and pitch settings, pushing to the outer limits to extract the maximum data. Ben also offers his views on the upcoming preliminary regatta in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and the huge opportunity that presents for the America’s Cup as an event. A must-see video after another solid, ‘workmanlike’ day on the Bay of Palma with the British team looking increasingly comfortable with their programme and delivering results for the design team and engineers of Mercedes Applied Science. It was October-like conditions in Barcelona on Thursday with a southeast ‘Xaoloc’ wind and an easterly swell sitting offset to each other producing challenging conditions for a commissioning day of Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s novel Tubercle port foil. The Swiss more than manned-up to the conditions, sending the AC40 (now firmly in LEQ12 mode) over some 50 nautical miles through five hours of solid testing with the sailors looking masterful as they pushed through the design office’s check list. Speaking afterwards, the ever-present on-water design co-ordinator, Adolfo Carrau, summed up the day saying: “Today was a bit of a commissioning with it, was a bit of a fast commissioning, but we did first check that structurally and the mechanics of the foil were working as intended and then we had a long day just going through the settings - different boat speeds and cants and pitch – so, typical settings that you try on the foils just to see how it (the new port foil) behaves and comparing against the other foil (starboard one-design) which we know already much better. So, I think as a first day it was pretty successful.” Section 41. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ANCHOR! Join this Sailing Family for a fun filled week onboard on the Gold Coast of Australia! The boat jobs and maintenance continues as we become more familiar with our new floating home, SV Shining Light, a 50 ft Aluminium Catamaran by Lock Crowther. This week we have heavy rain which is making the tide rip through the anchorage. Mix the strong tide with heavy winds and all the boats sail around their anchors and we get too close to another sailboat, haul the anchor, and look for a calmer spot to drop the pick. We have anchor trouble and we can’t drop the anchor! After all the boat jobs are completed, we head ashore to South Stradbroke Island and explore the island and discover rubbish bins. We are a full time liveaboard family with plans of sailing around the world. Come join us on SV Shining Light, this Sailing Family's new floating home, on her first week on anchor. Ep 47 – Fwd Head Countertop / Sailing Free Spirit Today we fit the granite slab for the countertop and place and mark the placement of the sink and faucet. Andy also creates a faceplate for the pump and light switch. All I can say is wow, the head is looking amazing! Note this video does not show the water connection and that will happen once we get the granite back from the shop with the correct holes and can install everything including plumbing. All will happen in a later video. All financial contributions (or items purchased on Amazon) are tax deductible for your US income tax returns for full face and/or retail value. Yes it's the name but this boat did make me feel like Tony Stark. In this video we put the prototype of the New Sterk 31 to the test in very challenging conditions with large steep waves that were coming into the bay with a very short wave period. The kind of conditions that can break some boats if you go to fast. After that test we whipped around the corner to find some flatter water and opened the twin 300Hp Yamaha's up to wide open throttle and experienced the full capability of this exceptional machine. Considering speeds we hit and the conditions we tackeled this Sterk 31 is a brand you need to watch if you're looking for the next level in performance day boats. This thing is a bit of an animal so she needs to be tamed by tallented and experienced drivers. But if you have the experience to drive a 31ft boat at projected speeds of 70kts then the Sterk 31 could be the boat for you. There is an interesting story behind this new brand which i'd like to go into detail in future videos but for now please enjoy this striking new design and put this brand on your watch list if you have owned an Axopar and you're looking for the next level of excitment on the water. The ability of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team to extract the absolute maximum from every opportunity on the water was again on show out on an afternoon session in the Bay of Cagliari after the team had waited for the strong Mistral morning conditions to subside. Docking out at almost 3.30pm, the Italians had a clear testing schedule on their LEQ12 that has been some three weeks in the shed undergoing maintenance and upgrades whilst the team got to grips with the AC40. Speaking afterwards Gilberto Nobili, the Operations Manager for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli was pleased with the day saying: “It was like we had the ending of a few days with the Mistral, so we got the end of it, it was a glamour day on the water not much waves and nice breeze. We went back in the water with our LEQ12 and very good, very productive.” Section 41.

After a stunning session for Alinghi Red Bull Racing out in Barcelona in a thermal ‘Garbi’ breeze that delivered a solid 12-15 knots all afternoon, Arnaud Psarofaghis came to the interview brimming with confidence and very much focused on the immediate future. With two AC40s now in their possession, the coming days will see race-practice and two-boat testing (one of the team’s AC40s is now in LEQ12 development mode), alternating with the AC75 programme that today took a significant step forward. Arnaud offers his insight into where the team are in the overall programme and looks forward to the move into the new permanent team base further down in the Port Vell as well as offering a clue as to who the fourth helmsman might be in the AC40s when they start the race programme. He also talks through the search for ‘consistency’ in the AC75 which still, at times, looks a wet boat through the manoeuvres but is something that the team are very much getting to grips with, as well as perfecting the fast bear-aways and controlled round-ups at the windward and leeward gates that the team looked imperious at today on the water. Best day to date for Alinghi Red Bull Racing with plenty of concentration on the profile through the tacks and gybes yielding their most positive foil-to-foil numbers. Section 41. It was the end of February when we last saw Emirates Team New Zealand sailing onboard an AC40 but ahead of the team’s two boats being loaded on to a ship imminently alongside the AC75 ‘Te Rehutai’ for the slow journey up to Barcelona, the team ramped up their programme with both AC40’s out on the Hauraki Gulf. The recon team noted that for the LEQ12 it was very much a commissioning run with all manner of modes and pitches being rifled through quickly by Pete Burling and Nathan Outteridge and as Ray Davies, the team’s coach, commented afterwards: “Yeah, for sure with the new foil there’s heaps to learn, there’s obviously cameras on it and so forth and designers pouring all over it and yes just some fast modes, some slow modes and different drops, accelerations all sorts…Yes, happy overall. Against the one design board you’d like to think it’s going well so we’ll do some to some two-boat racing probably next week now so that helps us get an understanding of its performance. It is quite hard to tell purely off numbers so it’s quite nice when you can line a couple of boats up.” Section 41. The desire by all America’s Cup teams to foil lower and lower in this cycle is something that will very much be a feature of the second generation AC75’s when they launch next year. Perhaps the finest exponents of this end-plating phenomenon are INEOS Britannia with their bustle-hung LEQ12 test platform ‘T6’ and on Monday out in the Bay of Palma they had flight control absolutely nailed. Speaking afterwards, Giles Scott, always the very best value in interviews gave his take on the day saying: “We had very much a designer’s day today. They wanted specific tests and areas they want they wanted looked at which was…lots of straight-line segments, different attitudes of the boat, different boat speeds, so yeah that that took up most part of.” And talking about the curious bow-up mode, Giles broke it down saying: “The boat loads up strangely and ultimately when we we’re sailing like that, it’s not how we'd be if we wanted to get the best out of the yacht (and get) I suppose the max performance.” Section 41. I first discovered Pearl Yachts at the Cannes Boat Show last year when I had a tour of the 62 and 95 in their range. I was fortunate to be invited on the press day for this new Pearl Yachts 72 over in Palma, Mallorca which is an amazing little island in the Med and part of Spain. This British brand is taking the competition to Princess and Sunseeker by producing a very high quality build at a cheaper price by utilizing their manufacturing facility in China. I've seen this before with an Australian Whitehaven Yachts built in Taiwan and I have to say they have come out with an excellent product that does meet the European brands head on in terms of quality. Sure it won't have the brand recognitition that Princess & Sunseeker enjoy in Australia but the cost savings are real and the argument to put a vessel like this into charter is also a solid one. They have already sold their first Pearl 62 into Sydney so expect to see more about this interesting company downunder very soon!
