Using only a blow torch, piece of wood and some screws. It's possible to bend a piece of stainless steel to the desired angle. This is not the "correct" way to do this. But it's worked well, and after more than 3 years. I'm happy I did it!

A Brilliant session from the hardest campaigning team so far in this America’s Cup cycle. Section 41. Reconnaissance a) As a campaign cost reduction measure, COR/D has mutually agreed to cooperatively implement a centralised reconnaissance programme for all teams for the reconnaissance of all Competitors’ AC75 Yachts, AC40 Yachts and LEQ12 yachts including both on-land and on-water imagery (the “Joint Recon Programme”). b) Each team is assigned a two-person Recon Unit to follow their every on-water move, but it's not that simple. The cameras are supplied and identical for all Recon Units. Drones are not allowed, and they can't get that close, plus following a boat and keeping a camera steady at 45 knots isn't that easy to begin with. c) A three minute interview follows each on water day, and teams must answer the Recon Unit's questions while trying not to give too much away. It's a raw, unedited view of the never before seen behind-the-scenes development of a team and their boat to win the oldest trophy in international sports. #AC37Recon #AmericasCup #Barcelona2024

Always one of the best value commentators, Nathan Outteridge stepped ashore at the Emirates Team New Zealand Wynyard Base after yet another upped-ante day in Auckland of pressured race practice in the team’s AC40 LEQ12 with the one-design AC40 and gave the recon team a wide-ranging interview covering the day, what they’re looking to achieve, how the foil testing is going and a glimpse of the team’s immediate future. To the naked eye, and from on/off-water recon shots, the new long-span starboard foil looks to be asymmetric with the outboard end curving gently upwards and the inboard end having slight anhedral bend. At the tips, and when viewed from on the water, the outboard end curves forward, whilst the inboard foil curves ever-so-slightly aft. The tips are both squared off and the join around the bulb area is incredibly well detailed and hydrodynamic. The recon team could certainly notice reduced leeway that ultimately produced great upwind height. Nathan gives his view, from his privileged perspective in the video. A must-watch – Nathan is one of the great communicators of the current America’s Cup. Section 41. How far can you take a dinghy..... on ONE 5gal tank of gas? What sort of sea states and ocean conditions can it survive with it's occupant intact and comfortable? What does the ENTIRE island of Saint Martin look like? Well, I was determined to find out with my brand new Highfield 310! The Highfield 310 is a 10'2" hypalon RIB dinghy I hoist behind my 38' sailboat "Adventureborne" while sailing the high seas. It needs to be light enough to hoist, but strong enough to survive the open ocean on extreme adventures like this. So I decided to put it to the test! All forty two nautical miles worth of test! Because of this, I got to see and explore more than I ever thought this island had to offer. Showing me just how far a simple dinghy can go if you're able and willing to go on an epic adventure. The island of Saint Martin is 23,680 acres, or 34 sq mi large. I was honestly surprised with everything that took place..... you'll see for yourself! ;) . . . One of the questions that comes up time and again around the 37th America’s Cup is: where will the innovation come and what will it be? In Cup after Cup, we see new takes on long-standing theories that modern construction, materials and understanding allow the teams to investigate and it’s becoming a pretty safe bet that INEOS Britannia, the team with technology coursing through their DNA, is going to be at the forefront in this cycle. Today out in Palma, almost routinely, the team revealed a bunch of new technology dockside including what looks like digital measurement patches at the first set of spreaders, a Pitot tube on the rather beautiful new starboard foil, a new wired in plastic box low down at the gooseneck and a fairing at the mast base which is an area of high concentration for the overall flow-dampening that the team are aiming for. It’s a bunch of new tech as we would expect from a team backed by the engineering might of Mercedes Applied Science and it’s coming onstream at a canter now as the clock ticks down to the America’s Cup Challenger Selection Series in September 2024. Below is the full recon report from Justin Chisholm but really worth a look is the interview with ‘Supercoach’ Rob Wilson who explains the day and gives an insight into what the team are working on with the new tech that also included on-water applications of what looked like flow paint to the foils. This is a team high on measurement, testing and innovation – it’s a tantalising mix for the Challenger of Record.

On December 12th, 1978, the German cargo ship MS München disappeared while sailing through a storm on the North Atlantic. ORP’s research objectives are from close collaborations with scientists focusing on the most critical environmental issues. After Matt Rutherford finished his record-making, solo circumnavigation of the Americas, he knew sailing was his passion. He was determined to find a way to use this passion to give something back to the Ocean. In 2012, Matt founded Ocean Research Project (ORP), a nonprofit organization based in Annapolis, Maryland. Since its founding, ORP has been dedicated to reversing humanity’s negative impact on the Ocean through science, exploration, and education.

The Princess F45 is a Tardis of a boat where the accommodation on offer defies its 45ft length. This one year old boat was packed with options and exuded the legendary Princess quality throughout. Twin Volvo IPS 650s give this boat a top speed of 32 knots and joystick control together with Dynamic Positioning System make it easy to handle...even short handed! Huge thanks to the Darren Grundy and team at Shepherds Boat Sales in Windermere for access to the boat, for more information: Tel: +44 (0) 15394 46004 Email: sales@shepherdswindermere.co.uk Website: www.shepherdswindermere.co.uk Please Like, Share and Subscribe to The Marine Channel, so we can keep growing and bring you more great videos, thanks!

They may have been off the recon radar for a week doing pure AC40 training for the Youth & Women’s teams, but it has been all action down in Cagliari with the LEQ12 undergoing some significant upgrades - most notably some changes to the starboard wing and uprated control panels in the cockpits. Coming back out onto the pure summer waters of Sardinia with the nailed-on sea breezes, the team barely looked like they had missed a beat and were keen to get into data gathering through their usual high-pressure bear-aways and rapid turn-up manoeuvres that they favour, before throwing in some marks and getting time-on-distance practice and short-course race coverage. Speaking after what was a relatively short, late afternoon session due to some technical issues in harbour delaying dock-out, Michele Cannoni, the Boat Captain, gave a wide-ranging interview summing up the day, speaking about the AC40 training last week and talking through the dockside issues before a fascinating interpolation of the new wing when pressed as to whether it was a ‘copy’ of other teams’ long-span anhedral foils: “maybe all the teams are getting to something similar let's say…” Solid afternoon for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the LEQ12. Sir Ben Ainslie’s old coach in the British Youth Squad used to have several expressions, some rather colourful, for days like the INEOS Britannia team experienced today in Palma – from flat calm to full on, it was a tricky one on the water with a building sea-state and a puffy airflow that offered no consistency. ‘T6’ was again the weapon of choice, wearing some natty new sails in the form of the heavier-weather M2-2P with its narrow top and the first break out of the new J2-2 which the team will be desperate to find the cross-over points between the J1-1 and the trusty J3-2 that is very much the go-to in these smaller foilers. Ben Cornish who was onboard today as the fifth man or ‘joyrider’ as he monikered himself, summed it up beautifully saying: “From what we've seen in Barcelona, it's probably not a million miles away from what we can be expecting so in terms of that for what the design team get and the feedback that we're sending back from a day like that, it's worth every moment you can possibly get in…it's difficult sailing these boats in those conditions and we're kind of blessed here that we probably see more easier days than days like that, so we certainly were making the most of it.” Section 41. Another sensational sailing session for Alinghi Red Bull Racing in absolute perfect Barcelona conditions with a rising breeze and a challenging swell that kept the sailors honest and on it all afternoon on Tuesday. Race practice was tight with Maxime Bachelin joining Sailing Team Advisor Dean Barker on the LEQ12 whilst Arnaud Psarofaghis and Nicolas Charbonnier continued their commissioning work on the AC40 in one design mode to get maximum practice ahead of the first Preliminary Regatta in Vilanova i La Geltrú in September. A mix of pre-start practice, short course racing and long data gatherings runs were completed at a frenetic pace and whilst the racing was full-on, the big gain was in the testing procedures with both boats swapping sides effortlessly and lining-up for valuable learnings and plenty of data flowing off the telemetry. It was an impressive, high-octane sight out on the Barcelona racetrack and speaking afterwards Julien Pilate, one of Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s sail designers who gave a very interesting interview talking through the two-boat testing schedule and broke down the process and how it’s easy to come to wrong decisions: “It all comes back to the planning and how we define the metrics. We have to be quite clever at defining the goals of the day, and it's not an easy job, there are so many variables and it's easy to draw the wrong conclusion. So, it's an iterative process you test, then you analyse, you learn, you might want to redo it to make sure it is working well, or you just move on in the learning slope.” This is a team high on that ‘learning slope’ now and looking impressive day after day out on the water with a real dedication to getting vital time on the water. More to come this week for the team that is relentless in their training schedule. It is some of the best footage we’ve seen so far in this America’s Cup cycle, with Emirates Team New Zealand implementing a high intensity pre-start practice routine that had watchers on the edge of their seat as the AC40 and AC40 LEQ12 went head to head on lead-ins to the start line. Over and over they practiced it, with the two boats judging time-on-distance and doing their upmost to shut the other out in coffin corner at the leeward end of the start line. Speaking afterwards, Tony Rae, a living legend of Emirates Team New Zealand as a member of the Black Magic crew in 1995 and a seven (or is it 8?) time campaigner, gave his racing assessment of the training schedule today saying: “The thing today was obviously taking turns at leading in or trailing in and just the manoeuvres before the start and dialling down and trying to lock each other out that sort thing. So the manoeuvrability of the boats in that much breeze and obviously the timing, because we know that going back to the line it can change very quickly from being early, to quite late, so yeah there's just a lot going on and you can never do too much of that sort of starting so I think today was good obviously for both boats to be able to just keep doing that over and over instead of worrying about the rest of the race.” Section 41. Sir Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott, a helming duo with a rightful weight of expectancy on their shoulders, came out swinging on a perfect day on the Bay of Palma and put the hammer down for a session that saw them at near race-pace and looking very much the real deal. After sailing, and having captured almost the perfect tack head on, the recon team quizzed Leigh McMillan as to what that perfect tack entailed. Long answer but very good: “You’ve got a lot of people involved in a tack and it's just everyone all working nicely together, the timing and everyone's in tune with that timing, and then swopping roles from one task to the other end and getting all of that timing right - getting the ride height, the heel and the pitch all nicely set up and all the trim adjustments you have to make, to exit the tack. So, it's a lot of choreography going on but I feel like we we’re getting pretty solid generally and trying to put the pressure on that in the pre-starts and put the pressure on a small racecourse and making sure that we're getting more finely tuned…you're looking at speed lost through the tacks that’s always a good one if you're not looking at the pure dynamics of the boat, just looking at your total speed loss from VMG to VMG through the manoeuvres.” Section 41. 22 Year old Gold Coaster Xavier Doerr’s 21 foot racing yacht has encountered a severe weather system off the West Australian coastline, with the lone yachtsman slammed by huge seas and winds gusting to 80 knots. The vessel has been knocked on its side on multiple occasions, suffering significant damage. In constant contact with his shore team, Xavier has taken a sharp left towards the coastline and will make his way to Fremantle Sailing Club where there will be an assessment of the boat to ascertain the repairs needed in order to safely continue.

It happened and it was spectacular. Alinghi Red Bull Racing were back on the water on Monday in Barcelona, this time with both AC40-7 and AC40-4 (in LEQ12 mode), lining up and then going head-to-head for some fascinating race practice. Ernesto Bertarelli and Dean Barker linked up on the LEQ12 that now sports its Tubercle delta wing on the starboard foil arm, switching it over from port with the Tubercles now featuring on the inside of the foil profile. It’s an interesting switch and with Jason Waterhouse onboard in one of the trimming positions, this interesting test team proved to be pretty handy with honours even over two races against Arnaud Psarofaghis and Nicolas Charbonnier sailing the one-design AC40. Yves Detrey, completing the team onboard the LEQ12 summed it up beautifully afterwards when asked how important this milestone day was for the Swiss team: “Yeah very important. It’s the first time that we are here racing with two boats, and I think it's a big milestone in any of the campaigns of any of the teams and we're the first today to do it (in Barcelona) and I think it was very interesting, you know it's active competition, so it's what we like as well.” Section 41.
