The tough weather conditions continued in Barcelona as the forecast strong breeze died out. Ineos Britannia returned to the water in their LEQ12 ‘T6’ after the foil crack in September whilst Orient Express Racing were also back out. In the deep Mediterranean and a persistently clocking north-easterly filtered into the early afternoon before a south westerly developed in the early evening. On the water, we saw the return of INEOS Britannia in their LEQ12 ‘T6’ after their foil crack on the 22nd September and Orient Express Racing were back out after their nosedive and jib rip yesterday in their AC40. This month in our Maritime High School video series we'll hear from Will Roberts, president of Foss Maritime—the premier Seattle-based harbor towing company that offers a range of marine transportation and engineering services.

For the second installment of the Maritime High School video series, we'll hear from Sarah Scherer. Sarah is the Maritime and Manufacturing Advocate at the Seattle Office of Economic Development. She has nearly 25 years of experience in the maritime industry, including positions in hydrographic research, fishing vessel operations, and oil spill response with the NOAA.

Each month we'll be interviewing some of the folks committed to the success of this school and its students, from educators to industry partners and everyone in between, covering topics like why maritime, why now, and what can our students expect from their MHS education? First up in our series is Tremain Holloway, inaugural principal of Maritime High School. Tremain previously served as co-principal at Highline High School and assistant principal at Raisbeck Aviation High School. He is an equity-driven leader, committed to academic excellence and innovative opportunities for all students.

On April 22, 2021, families, teachers, school administrators, and community and industry partners came together to learn more about the new Maritime High School and why this kind of learning matters.

Wednesday was a day of wind extremes on both ends of the spectrum, with three teams out on the water. NYYC American Magic were back out with their highly modified AC40’s running bespoke wings on both ‘America’ and ‘Magic’ whilst keeping the aero one-design to extract meaningful data. Emirates Team New Zealand had a short session truncated by some media demands but straight out of the Port Vell they were off and flying, setting the tone for a thrilling afternoon session of adrenaline pumping action. While sailing from Santa Barbara to Catalina Island, we flew a spinnaker along the inland coast of Catalina. We weren't making one of the points of land we needed to in order to get to Avalon, and needed to gybe. This video shows how that gybe went fairly wrong. If you're going to learn anything from this, I think it would be not to call your gybe too early, and when short handed especially in heavier wind (22 knots here) it's best to do outside gybes. We had a very successful gybe a few days before, inside the Santa Barbara Channel, so maybe we felt a little cocky, but this definitely took us down a notch.
