Tall mountains surround numerous protected bays and dense forests loom over the crystal clear water. Honestly on the surface it seems perfect. But these mountains create extremely deep anchorages so boaters are forced to anchor very close to land and tie lines ashore. This situation can be very dangerous if strong winds come from the wrong direction, which is actually not all that uncommon here since the wind wraps around the mountains in unpredictable ways. So you can never be certain that you are truly protected. And that’s a bit hard to stomach when our home and everything we own and love hang in the balance. Now if you cruise this area in the summer, the weather is for the most part calm and predictable, but you’ll have to share it with about 7 billion other boats. So we’re here in the spring and although the anchorages aren't too crowded, the weather is at times volatile and unpredictable. So we’ve got to learn how to cope with these unique challenges if we’re going to survive one of the most beautiful cruising grounds we’ve ever experienced. But first we’ve got to make the 50 nm sail from our current anchorage at Serce Limani, where we’ve been for the past week enjoying a bit of isolation and off-grid living. From the recent days of relatively calm sailing, today Barcelona reminded all involved in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup that it’s a venue to be treated with caution and respect as a residual southerly swell mixed with a sharp north-easterly wind chop that filtered in and whipped up a mean average of 1 metre waves to make it interesting. Still in the grips of the slow-moving Atlantic high-pressure system however, winds were in the 7-13 knot range but at the upper end it showed just how potent the new AC75 designs really are. Ep 89 - Dinghy Race - Again…. Sailing Free Spirit Today, we had the whole gang and while I (Nancy) was attempting to edit a video, we or rather Andy got us involved in another dinghy race. We race once again from the ICW, no wake zone to One Tree Island. Competitors: Free Spirit is a 2023 high field dinghy with a 25 hp Yamaha motor, Viscaya is a Nautica 15 ft, 70 hp dinghy and finally Sea Girl is a 2023 West Marine rib dinghy with a 15 hp Yamaha motor… Who’s coming in 1st? Once the race is finished we set off to the local beach for a celebratory drink at a resort and park the dinghies before heading off to the local yacht club for Viscaya to finish out the evening. The Youth & Women were out early today on the Hauraki Gulf, desperate to get vital time in the boat before the established senior team arrived with their potent LEQ12. However, Ray Davies, the Team Coach, threw a spanner in the works in terms of sail set-up today to equalise things out a bit and set a powerful J1 on the AC40 one-design and reigned in the LEQ12 with a J2 in just 8-10 knots of breeze. Interesting session to see just how draggy the J1 is when in flight with a reduced top-speed but just how potent it was in terms of acceleration after manoeuvres. Good exercise. All credit to Alinghi Red Bull Racing who spied a tiny weather window in Barcelona just after midday and went for it despite heavily overcast conditions and persistent, driving rain that made the session a damp and tricky affair. They were rewarded with just one short upwind that got the boat flying, albeit briefly, and then it was a study in displacement sailing as the wind shut down before the team called it and towed home. Just a flyby around Salt Whistle Bay on Mayreau Island during our 9-day exploration of Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Try as they might, it was a day of persistence and patience for the Swiss who were coaxing and willing ‘BoatOne’ to flight with the only realistic option being a tow-up from the Chase Boat. This they did four times and were rewarded with just minutes of flight time before the boat came down into displacement and the process of speed-building started again. After just over three hours on the water, the team called it a day and wisely headed back to base. Whilst the Swiss called it a day, American Magic stayed out and, as is so often the case with sailing, a golden hour occurred late into the afternoon and the best breeze of the day filtered in for a short while producing 6.5 knots of maximum pressure. Plenty enough for Patriot, she was smartly up on her foils on a solid upwind with four tacks mirrored by a downwind leg with just three gybes – the best sailing of the day. An attempt at another lap saw touchdowns through the manoeuvres and the team called it a day, docking in just before 6pm after five hours on the water. Emirates Team New Zealand entered the water with a shifted programme today getting a mixture of their Youth and Women’s teams as much time in the boat as possible with a five-and-a-half-hour session into the early winter dusk. This was fun and learning in equal measure in a breeze that built and faded through the afternoon from flat calm to 5-12 knots at times and on a super-flat Hauraki Gulf that was perfect for manoeuvre and sail trim training.
