People ask us all the time — how do you fly a spinnaker on a Balance catamaran? In this video, Phil from Zoom Sails (who designed every sail for SV GoTFO) walks us through step-by-step: ⚓ Rigging with color-coded sheets & guys (Port sheet = red, Starboard sheet = green, Guys = black) ⚓ Hoist sequence — halyard + sock deployment ⚓ Trimming — sheets side-to-side, guys control foot height ⚓ Flying angles — best between the 120s°, can fly as high as 90° relative ⚓ The douse — comms, shackle release, sock down, halyard down We’ve flown “Big Purple” before, but this lesson was about balance and confidence. Even though Dennis wasn’t aboard, Phil was in Greece as we passed south — and I had to step in. My Love Bug 💜🐞 reflection? Sailing teaches us to own our triggers, protect each other when we’re flooded, and always return to the calm at the helm. 📧 Want our wind-angle PDF? One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. To get power on our raw land, we had to completely change our plans — and build a workshop/house before the dream home. PLUS shop 25% off hundreds of top products this week before the sale ends on September 20th! #thrivemarketpartner What started as installing a 400-amp meter base quickly led us to rethinking everything about our first build on the property. Instead of building the trailer shelter we had planned, we realized it made more sense to design a two-story, 20×30 workshop/house we could live in now and later use as our permanent shop, office, and guest space. It’s a huge pivot, but one that solves our immediate problems and sets up the homestead long term. In this episode, I pour concrete for the first time to set the posts for our meter base, work through the design of the workshop/house, and bring in my construction buddy Cody to see if it’s even possible to fit this structure on our small build site. After six months of living the Tahitian dream, it's time to set sail once more! We're leaving the gentle embrace of Tahiti and motoring over to nearby Moorea for a final farewell before pointing our bow west. Our destination: the Leeward Islands, and the start of our fifth sailing season. We were eager to get underway, but the weather had other plans. Would our first overnight passage in over half a year be a pleasant journey or a chaotic challenge? Join us as we navigate the unpredictable waters of French Polynesia and find out what our next adventure has in store! NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. This episode will mark our first week as the new owners of an abandoned Catamaran - a boat that has never yet had the chance to glide across oceans. After over a decade on the hardstand and almost 4 different owners, this Kelsall KSS 58 couldn't be more deserving of a new chapter. But before we can even think to begin to write it, we need to know the truth - why has she been left on the hard for so long? What went so wrong for the previous owners? How can such a beautiful vessel travel less than 2 miles up a river in her over 10yrs of existence? Amongst these questions, we're also met with adversary. Although we bought her at a fair auction, this week we've faced some hard truths. Not everyone is happy for us...and a boatyard is a place that requires friendships and networks. Join us this episode as we dig a little deeper into a story best forgotten, and look forward to a story not yet written 💙 We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun!

Stability & Handling: The semi-displacement hull and wide beam provide excellent stability in moderate seas, making it ideal for coastal cruising in areas like the Pacific Northwest or the Great Loop. Versatile Use: Perfect for overnight cruising, day trips, or as a comfortable liveaboard with its spacious interior and practical layout. Durable Construction: Built by Chung Hwa Boats in Taiwan, the heavily laid-up fiberglass hull ensures durability, though check for window leaks and deck maintenance. Low Maintenance Options: Many models have replaced teak decks with fiberglass for reduced upkeep, and features like LED lighting and updated windows (e.g., Diamond Seaglaze) enhance longevity. Great Loop Capable: With a shallow draft and robust systems, this trawler is well-suited for extended adventures like the Great Loop. Classic Appeal: The teak interior and exterior brightwork give it a timeless, head-turning aesthetic, perfect for those who love traditional trawler styling. ⚠️ Maintenance Tips Inspect for window leaks, a common issue with Taiwanese trawlers, to prevent cabin damage. Check the keel and hull for delamination or blistering, especially if the boat has grounded. Ensure the propeller is balanced to avoid vibrations and verify engine maintenance records for the reliable Lehman or Perkins engines.

Get out the charts, tighten the bolts on whatever you’re calling a boat, and start apologizing to your boss now—R2AK is coming back in 2026. On Sunday, June 14, at 5:00 AM, the starting gun fires in Port Townsend, and a mixed bag of dreamers, daredevils, and maybe you will set off on the 750-mile, engine-free, support-less sufferfest north to Ketchikan. Two stages, same deal as always: (it ain’t broke.) Applications open November 15, 2025, and slam shut April 15, 2026. Between now and then: build/repair/buy/remove-from-the-bushes your boat, make a blood oath with your team, and make a covenant with whatever sea deity you prefer. Should you do this? Absolutely not. Will that stop you? If you’re even considering it, take a long walk, think it over, and flip a coin. If it lands on heads: do it. If it lands on tails: also do it. r2ak.com 🎥: Garret Weintrob

The Moth fleet have had their fair share of bad luck over the past couple of years, with a lack of wind at some major events, but so far the UK Nationals at Torbay have been close to perfect. The second day saw lighter winds than on Thursday, for which I think everyone was thankful, but still provided an ideal race track for the Moths to get up and fly. We’re now just 8 weeks away from moving aboard our sailboat full-time as part of our liveaboard sailing adventure around the world! In this episode, we share an exciting (and slightly overwhelming) update on where we are with the downsizing process — selling, donating, and letting go of years of land-based possessions to embrace the simplicity and freedom of life on the water. If you’ve ever dreamed of living on a sailboat, travelling the world by wind power, or taking the leap into the cruising lifestyle, this episode gives you an honest, behind-the-scenes look at the big transition from land to sea. We talk about what’s been easy, what’s been hard, and what we’re learning along the way as we prepare to call our sailboat “home.” We’re also just 4 weeks away from a major haul out — when our boat will be lifted from the water for essential maintenance and preparation for our life of sailing around the world. This haul out is crucial for making sure our vessel is seaworthy, safe, and ready for offshore cruising. From bottom paint to mechanical checks, this is where the real work happens before the fun begins! In this video, you’ll see: - Our downsizing tips for moving onto a sailboat - What to expect in a sailboat haul out - How we’re preparing for the liveaboard lifestyle - The emotional side of letting go of “stuff” for a life of adventure Whether you’re a beginner sailor, a seasoned bluewater cruiser, or someone dreaming of escaping the 9-to-5 to travel the world by sailboat, you’ll find inspiration, practical advice, and a real-world look at what it takes to prepare for full-time cruising. Join us as we get ready for this exciting new chapter — chasing horizons, finding new anchorages, and embracing the freedom of the liveaboard lifestyle. Subscribe and follow our journey as we countdown to launch day and start our adventure of sailing around the world. It's been a year and a half since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been a year and a half since our first sail ever. That's right a year ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sail up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. We are now preparing to move onboard and to sail around the world. Join us to see the challenges as we continue to learn to sail, prepare our boat and make changes so our boat feels like a home. We are moving onboard in just a few weeks so our sailing dream is getting closer and closer. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We are Gav and Shezz an Aussie couple with a dream to sail and scuba dive around the world. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter X https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World.
