During a great day of ocean sailing on route to Grenada, the waves starting building to 3-4mtrs and began funnelling around directly behind us. Before we could extend our main towing line to compensate, the waves had already pushed the dinghy almost right up into the back of the boat.. as the dinghy pulled backwards on the next wave the line tightened past its stress limits and snapped... we had our secondary dock line attached but it is not meant for towing and as you can see it only tolerated a few minutes before it let go and our dinghy was left adrift on the ocean in big following waves. The resulting 'man overboard' drill ensued, and with a well executed team effort we got the dinghy reattached and back underway for Grenada! It's time to face our biggest fear since we got this boat nearly two years ago. Our engine has not been touched since 2006...will it start for us when we try? Matt goes through a full explanation of how he prepped our Yanmar 4JH4E engine before our attempted start. There were a lot of things on that list, and a bit of annoying beeping from the pre-start in the background, so I've included captions in a few areas to make it easier to understand. The next item to tick off our list is getting our cockpit ready to paint. Although we did 90% of the deck last year, we needed to wait on the cockpit due to all the chaos of things stored in there. Bringing it down to bare metal, we work it back up through an aluminum primer, barrier coat, and paint primer before we come to a halt on the painting process. Cheers from the work yard! Video taken between the hulls of a Lagoon 450. Conditions were following seas 6-8 ft in Hawks Channel between Marathon and Key West. Wind speed between 30 and 38 knots and boat speed between 9 and 14 knots. Note that with good bridge deck clearance there is very little slamming even in very choppy seas and gale force winds.
