Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Dear ladies and gentlemen thank you for entering the description section of dream job reality check. It is here that you will learn a little bit more about the video that is probably playing above. Some things that I would like to highlight is that if you love what you are doing that nothing is ever really like being at work. This doesn’t mean that life isn’t difficult maintaining a weekly upload schedule and sailing around the world. There have been arguments, squalls, pirate attacks, shark encounters, coconut attacks, post argument make up bliss and hours of sleeplessness. This is sometimes before breakfast. I guess for me there were a few things that stick in my mind that might be the catalysts for this video. Early on when we had come across people in the Pacific, specifically Travis and Mark and Jose and Gina and they had mentioned getting into sailing because of some of our videos and how they maybe made it seem easier than it actually was. Also listening to my friends and family back home who were under the impression that we were just sailing around on holiday which just is not the case at all. Sailing from A to B in your home in a foreign country with your “car” (tender) surrounded by salt water of varying levels of violence needs a certain level of attention most boats have a Captain and several crew. Filming this and making videos is another thing entirely and usually people on land have reliable internet and can order broken microphones online. We work crazy, ridiculous hours, there are only two of us but we love it. We hope you love the content we make. Thank you so much for following. Well, the helm normally resides in Romeo or Juliet's hands, our two wind vane self steering units. This was recorded while Juliet steered us with great accuracy on a broad reach in 17 to 23 knot winds, one reef in the mainsail, one reef in the foresail and full jib. There was little for us to do except alter the vane slightly from time to time to maintain our heading as the wind direction gradually shifted... and enjoy the ride. We hope you enjoy it too! Race 5 of the JJ Giltinan Trophy series saw the fleet of 25 boats line up for the second race of the day in light shifty winds. Maersk Line came from behind to win the race and lead the pointscore. The Time Genie was second from Finport Trade Finance in third place. Bow Caddy caught the action from the beach at Bradley’s Head.

In honor of our late Curator Carleton Pinheiro, the Herreshoff Marine Museum and Halsey C. Herreshoff hosted an evening celebrating the mighty Herreshoff racing Schooner WESTWARD and her replica, the beautiful ELEONORA. ELEONORA had graced the HMM waterfront as her home during summer of 2017. The schooner WESTWARD was launched in March 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. and became one of the most famous racing schooners in the world. WESTWARD was undoubtedly the fastest schooner in the world in her day, and with Captain Charlie Barr at her helm, she sailed successfully against well-known yachts like BRITANNIA, LULWORTH and METEOR II winning numerous trophies. For thirty-seven years, WESTWARD graced the yachting scene and represented all that was best in yacht design and workmanship. The yacht ELEONORA, an exact replica of WESTWARD, was built at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland and launched in March 2000. Since then, she has successfully participated in a number of classic sailing regattas and hosted a number of high profile guests. The yacht is powered by a Volvo Penta marine diesel with saildrive which has 720 hours on the log and has been regularly serviced by Volvo service dealers.
