Early September morning - calm sea, golden sunrise, and the gentle sound of our engine as we leave the beautiful island of Lastovo, Croatia. After an unforgettable summer, it’s time to cross the Adriatic Sea to Vieste, Italy. We motor sail through glassy water, make coffee onboard, and watch the Croatian coast fade behind us. In Vieste, we wander the old town - narrow alleys, white stone houses, and the romantic legend of the Hearts of Vieste, carved by lovers into the rock of love. This video is a calm, heartfelt end to our sailing season - but we know we’ll be back in Lastovo again. ❤️ 🎵 Music: “Goodbye, Lastovo Morning” & “Hearts of Vieste” – Original Suno AI songs created for this video. ⛵ About our journey: We’re Stoyan and Stanis — a couple sailing aboard our Najad 380 Indara, sharing slow adventures across the Mediterranean. Deep in Papua New Guinea’s island chain, we uncover ancient traditions still alive today — from stone axes to the making of Bagi, the shell money that continues to shape island life. Join us for a rare look into real island life and the cultural exchanges that still define this remote corner of the Pacific. 🌴 Don’t forget to subscribe and sail with us as we explore more untold stories from the sea. As we sail across the turquoise waters of Papua New Guinea, our lines go tight — three big pelagics, mackerel and tuna, strike while we make our way toward the remote island of Panawina. But as the day unfolds, something unusual happens — no canoes, no visitors. In a region where hospitality is a way of life, silence often means something deeper. Later, we learn the village has been caught in local tensions linked to sorcery — a reality still deeply woven into life in these islands. That evening, a kind man finally paddles out to meet us — a village pastor with a warm smile. We gift him the fish we caught, and in return, he welcomes us ashore. At his home, we’re shown an ancient tradition — the making and meaning of the stone axe, once a vital tool and powerful trade item, symbolizing strength, skill, and ancestral connection. That evening, he shares a rare and beautiful tradition — the ancient art of making Bagi, also known as Mwali, the traditional shell money of the Milne Bay region. Using simple handmade tools, he crafts this valuable currency from the chama shell, a large red shell they dive for in deep waters. 🐚 About Bagi: Bagi are carefully shaped and polished shell disks or segments, usually strung together into a necklace-like form. Each polished shell piece represents wealth, status, and social connection. These shells are shaped, smoothed, and strung by hand — a form of traditional currency that has been used for generations to trade food, pigs, sailing canoes, and even for bride price — a timeless system of universal exchange that still binds communities together today. What began as a simple sail and a few fish became a journey into the heart of a living culture — one still bound by generosity, craftsmanship, and the rhythm of the ocean. 🌀 A story of connection, belief, and timeless exchange in the islands of Papua New Guinea. 🐚 Episode 21 – Sailing Louisiades, Papua New Guinea 📍 Location: Panawina Island, Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea 🎣 Themes: Traditional Money, Bagi (Mwali) Shell Currency, Stone Axe Traditions, Island Culture, Sorcery Beliefs, Sailing Adventure, Papua New Guinea Documentary, Milne Bay Culture ⏱️ Timestamps: 🐟 0:00 – Poppy reels in her first mackerel and tuna as we sail toward Panawina Island, Papua New Guinea ⛵ 1:35 – Once Upon a Reef intro — life and travel by sailboat through remote Melanesia ⚡ 3:36 – Why no one visited us — uncovering local conflicts tied to sorcery and belief 🍲 6:41 – Sharing a meal and stories with the island’s pastor and his family 🪓 7:07 – Discovering the ancient craft and meaning of the traditional stone axe 🐚 7:24 – The making of Bagi (Mwali) — how the people of Papua New Guinea still create and use their traditional shell money 🕯️ 8:27 – Traditions when someone passes away — how belief and custom guide village life 🫶 Support Our Journey: 💡 Patreon → https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef ☕ Buy us a coffee → https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef 🎁 Send us a gift → https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow Our Adventures: 📸 Instagram → @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 🎥 Poppy's YouTube → https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 Business Inquiries: onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, we’re Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure-loving sailors exploring the most remote reefs and islands in the world. In this episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States, host Bela Musits continues his journey with fellow sailor Mike Malekoff aboard Mike’s Hunter 44 Deck Salon. Recorded during their relocation trip from Brunswick, Georgia to Burlington, Vermont, this installment covers their passage from Hop-O-Nose Marina in Catskill, New York, to Schuyler Yacht Basin on the Hudson River. Bela begins by returning to the boat after two weeks away, delayed both by a family wedding and a lock closure that left them waiting in Catskill. During that time, Mike held down the fort, provisioning the boat and calling daily for updates on when the locks would reopen. Their reunion kicks off with stories of patience, planning, and keeping a cruising sailboat ready for the next leg of the voyage. With the locks finally open, Bela and Mike prepare to head north. Along the way, they share the practical realities of traveling the Hudson River by sailboat, where timing, tides, and locks all play a role. They discuss their departure from Hop-O-Nose, navigating under bridges, and the shifting challenges that come with moving inland toward Lake Champlain. As the Hunter 44 Deck Salon makes her way upriver, the sailors reflect on both the beauty and the logistics of this leg. They talk about the differences between coastal passages and inland waterways—contrasting offshore freedom with the precise planning needed to transit locks, deal with low bridges, and coordinate with marinas like Schuyler Yacht Basin. The episode also highlights the camaraderie and humor that come with long-distance cruising. Bela and Mike joke about the quirks of waiting in Catskill, provisioning a boat for weeks at a time, and managing life aboard when plans change unexpectedly. For listeners curious about the real-world experience of cruising up the Hudson River, their stories bring the journey to life. This conversation isn’t just about travel; it’s about the mindset of sailors tackling an extended relocation voyage. From patience during delays to the satisfaction of finally getting underway again, Bela and Mike’s discussion captures the ebb and flow of cruising life. Listeners will hear what it’s like to adapt plans, keep a boat shipshape during downtime, and re-energize when the next opportunity to sail arrives. Key Topics Covered in This Episode: Returning to the boat after delays and a two-week pause. The impact of lock closures on cruising schedules. Provisioning and maintaining a Hunter 44 Deck Salon during extended waits. Departing Hop-O-Nose Marina and heading north on the Hudson River. Strategies for handling locks, bridges, and tides on inland waterways. The transition from offshore passages to river cruising. Reflections on flexibility, patience, and the humor of sailing life. For sailors planning a similar journey—from Catskill to Schuyler Yacht Basin, and eventually into the Champlain Canal—this episode provides both inspiration and practical insights. It showcases the mix of preparation, problem-solving, and good humor required for cruising the East Coast. Wache erklärt die Unterschiede gängiger Modelle (u. a. B. Böenpeaks, Starkregenmengen) bleiben schwer abbildbar, weil historische Trainingsdaten solche Spitzen selten enthalten. *The Fleming 85* is the latest flagship from Fleming Yachts, a builder with a reputation for creating rugged, long-range passagemakers. Designed for extended cruising, this yacht offers a choice between a traditional open flybridge or a fully enclosed pilothouse on the upper deck. The hull, engineered by renowned naval architects Norman R. Wright and Sons, uses advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for maximum efficiency. The result is a vessel with exceptional fuel economy, a robust build and the classic, timeless style Fleming is known for. While in Cannes we were able to step aboard Freja, a custom 85 with three stateroom plus crew quarters, there’s room for family, friends, and long adventures across the globe. They chose a clean, contemporary interior design while keeping the timeless lines and traditional soul that Fleming is known for. Built for serious passagemaking yet made for living, Freja is a perfect blend of comfort, craftsmanship, and classic style. *Spacious Deck Layouts* Expansive deck spaces include a foredeck with massive storage, a flybridge accommodating a 17-foot tender, and an aft deck for sheltered dining. *Customizable Interior* The interior offers a range of styles from traditional to contemporary, with double-glazed windows for year-round comfort. Layout options include a 3- or 4-cabin arrangement for guests and a choice of single or twin crew quarters. Quiet night in the Wrangell shipyard before we sandblast the port side of the Alaskan Gypsy. This corner of the keel had acted like a sacrificial anode over the years, dissolving from electrolysis after the sacrificial anodes (zincs) had all been. consumed. I’m filling it back in with 6010 rod, overhead, one fat bead at a time. It’s nice laying down doing some calm relaxing overhead 6010 late in the evening. In this short: • Overhead welding on the keel corner • Repairing electrolysis damage • Relaxed night-shift shipyard vibes Sometimes it’s not about finishing - it’s about staying with the work until the lights go out. ⸻ #AlaskanGypsy #SteelBoat #Welding #ShipyardLife #SailboatRefit #BoatRestoration #HullRepair #6010Rod #BoatDIY
