Navigation am Segelboot auf Langfahrt: Plotter, iPad, Handy, Papierkarten — wie das zusammenspielt. Ein Freund fragte mich, ob er einen zweiten Plotter braucht. Meine Antwort hat ihn überrascht. Ich hab auf der La Licorne kein teures Cockpit-Setup — und trotzdem navigiere ich zuverlässig auf Langfahrt. Mein Raymarine C120 ist aus den 90ern, kein NMEA, alte Karten. Aber er macht Radar und er funktioniert immer. Das eigentliche Herzstück ist ein uraltes gebrauchtes iPad der sechsten Generation mit Navionics und AIS überlagert. Diese Kombination — aktuelle Seekarte plus AIS — ist für mich auf See das Entscheidende. Dazu kommt mein Handy mit Navily, Windy, Ankeralarm und dem elektronischen Logbuch. Und Papierkarten, die ich manchmal fast vergesse, obwohl sie vorgeschrieben sind und besonders an der Atlantikküste oder im Englischen Kanal wirklich gerettet haben. Ganz am Ende gibt es noch einen Tipp, den ich fast vergessen hätte: wie du deine gesamte Navigation mit einem Backofen vor Blitzeinschlag schützt. In this episode of the Poulsbo Boat Project, I continue building the backbone of this classic 15’ sport fishing boat design. This week is all about dry fitting the centerline structure: stem, keelson, transom, transom knee, and cutwater. After refining the transom in the last episode and setting up the station molds on the strongback, it’s time to start bringing the backbone together. I trim and fit the transom knee, steam-bend the aft section of the keelson into place, and continue shaping and fitting the cutwater assembly before final planking begins. This project is a modern cedar strip reinterpretation of a classic 1950s Ronald Young - designed Poulsbo Boat, originally built as a traditional carvel-planked sport fishing boat in Poulsbo, Washington. We're still doing some painting. Boring! It does look nice when finished though. Karen's painter outfit makes Steve's putter flutter. Some great friends stopped by to visit on their way north. Always a fun time. They sail and anchor a lot while enjoying great views and very scenic locations. We looked at some of our Garmin 1242xsv chart plotter features. More to come on that. Our new Garmin GC100 bow camera works well but because it is wifi instead of hard wired sometimes the it blinks out for a few seconds. We talked about our tumblehome hull shape. Some describe it as very sexy and may possess a few advantages when sailing. Watch out when docking though as it sticks out and is prone to getting a scratch here and there. Day 35 of the 75 Hard challenge and still pushing forward. Today was all about understanding the importance of recovery. After several intense HIIT sessions and upper body workouts, I decided to switch things up and give my muscles a chance to recover properly while still staying fully committed to the challenge. One thing 75 Hard teaches you very quickly is that consistency matters more than destroying yourself every single workout. There are no days off, but there are smarter ways to train and keep progressing. Installing the deck hatches on our aluminum expedition sailboat turned out to be WAY more complicated than we expected. This was one of those projects that kept us awake at night for months… We knew that as soon as we started welding large hatch frames into the deck, there was a real risk of warping the entire structure again. And after all the distortion problems we already had with the deck during construction, we absolutely could not afford to get this wrong. The biggest bulkheads on our DIY wooden boat build are finally DONE! 🚢 We tackle Station 7 — the largest frame on the entire boat — after skipping it earlier when we couldn't find quality Chechen wood. Now we're back with Chechen marine triplay to build this critical structural piece in two parts using the ladder phase design. The Riviera 395 SUV sits in an interesting position. For some people, this could genuinely be their first “real” motor yacht… and for others, it could easily be their last. If you want the comfort, offshore capability and solid feel of a serious cruising platform without dealing with the logistics and stairs of a much larger boat, the 395 starts making a lot of sense. In this video, we take a proper look at what makes this boat work so well for two completely different owners: someone moving up from outboard-powered boats and wanting something manageable, or an experienced Riviera owner looking to simplify without giving up comfort and capability. The layout is practical, the single-level living works extremely well, and the Volvo IPS setup makes docking far less intimidating than many people expect in a boat this size. Começamos com pura diversão em Niterói, testando o Dingue — o "kart dos mares" — e comparando a agilidade desse pequeno barco com o conforto do nosso veleiro de 41 pés. Mas a leveza da tarde deu lugar à tensão quando zarpamos rumo a Paraty. Durante a travessia noturna, fomos surpreendidos por uma mudança drástica no tempo: uma nuvem gigante, ignorada por todas as previsões, surgiu no satélite. Compartilhamos o momento exato da decisão tática de mudar a rota para o interior da Ilha Grande para fugir do pior, enfrentando rajadas de 30 nós que testaram nossa segurança e paciência.

Salut les loulous ⛵❄️ L’ambiance monte à bord : avec les amis, nous partons assister à un concert de musique Capverdienne. Une soirée pleine de rythme, de chaleur et de bonne humeur, parfaite pour profiter de l’atmosphère locale. Le lendemain, direction une magnifique plage pour organiser un barbecue. Au menu : du thon grillé, préparé face à l’océan, dans un décor incroyable. Un vrai moment de détente . Côté pratique, je trouve un coiffeur qui accepte de me couper les cheveux pour seulement 2 €. Une petite expérience locale simple et sympathique. À bord, les essais continuent : je teste la fabrication de yaourt avec du lait en poudre… et le résultat est excellent. Une solution pratique pour la vie en bateau et l’autonomie alimentaire. Les travaux de rénovation avancent aussi sérieusement. Je commence le décapage de certaines parties du bateau avant d’appliquer une nouvelle peinture. J’en profite également pour traiter la rouille afin de protéger durablement la structure. Je prends aussi le temps de montrer ce qu’il est possible d’acheter avec 30 € dans les magasins du Cap-Vert : alimentation, produits du quotidien… un bon aperçu du coût de la vie sur place. Enfin, j’explique en détail plusieurs méthodes de conservation des aliments utilisées à bord. 🌴 Island hopping through the USVI brought us from the busy streets of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas to the wild beauty of St. John… and what an adventure it turned into. We wandered the steep chaotic roads of Charlotte Amalie (definitely not the most pedestrian-friendly place 😅), got rescued with a ride from a local, and made our way up to the incredible views at Drake’s Seat with turquoise bays below and the viewpoint of the town. After more exploring through town, we cooled off with pool time and drinks overlooking the harbour near the legendary Blackbeard's Castle — pirate vibes included. 🏴‍☠️ Then it was time to sail over to Saint John and the contrast was unreal. Less cruise ships and traffic… more mountains, wilderness, beaches and untouched Caribbean beauty.
