SUPPORT OUR REFIT: www.red-seas.com/refit It's time we hauled out catamaran out of the water to make a start on our huge boat refit. We haven't lifted Indioko out for more than four years so it's definitely overdue for some repairs and major upgrades. Our works list is terrifyingly long but we're optimistic we can smash our way through the to do list and get back to sailing and adventuring again before we know it. First up, we have the challenge of leaving the marina and the incredibly tight space between two piling moorings where we've been tied up for the last few months while Brioni has been recovering. Then we'll motor down the river to Harbourside Boat Works which will be our new home for a few months while we completely change every system onboard out catamaran. We have got some incredibly optimistic plans and you don't want to miss a single step. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far - it's a lot of work and we're doing our best not to be intimidated by it, but I guess only time will tell if we've taken on more than we can handle. We spent a few weeks in January touring SE Asia. At the end of our trip we were in Phuket, Thailand and by coincidence so too were Nigel and Suzanne on their Tamar 31 catamaran, Dark Horse. They are very experienced sailors and have a very nicely built boat. They kindly invited me for a sail and we had a great time sailing round the nearby islands. I found it very different to the Caribbean, which is effectively a lee shore after 2000 miles of trade winds and accompanying swells. Whereas off Phuket there was just a wind blown chop and much lighter winds. It also didn't rain, in fact there were not even the "trade wind" clouds we were used to in the West Indies. The downside was that it got very hot and the rigid bimini was essential, even though it did somewhat reduce the view of the sails. One of the few modifications made on Dark Horse. We think there are a lot of multihulls in the UK, but anchored in the bay we counted 23 multihulls and 31 monohulls. And that number excludes the 30+ day charter cats operating out of the marina. More on the Tamar 31 here https://sailingcatamarans.com/index.php/designs-2/5-catamarans-over-40ft/480-tamar-31 As always no audio on this short video

Be sure to grab your own copy so that you can learn everything you need to know about rigging. In this episode, Herby seals up the huge characteristic windows found on all boats of this size from this era. The large windows are a massive liability in the ocean because the large fragile windows can easily break when smashed by giant waves. Once the windows are broken, subsequent waves will flood the boat’s interior and sink you! Herby seals up the large holes with fiberglass and polyester resin from @TotalBoat by creating a strong and thick plug on inside. When he works on the deckhouse, he will then do the same on the outside. He also explains why these windows needed to be sealed up now because the inside will be built with epoxy and the outside with polyester. How do you build a lightweight wooden mast? In this episode, we make a bird’s mouth hollow spar, laying out an elliptical taper, cutting precise joinery, and gluing the mast together with epoxy. #Boatbuilding #Woodworking #WoodenBoat #SparMaking My website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding/ It's not about the money but living isn't free... In this episode of Nomad Boat Building, Mark walks through the full process of building a bird’s mouth hollow wooden mast using traditional spar-making techniques and modern epoxy methods. Starting from the sail plan, we break down how to determine mast diameters, lay out an elliptical spar taper, and calculate stave dimensions. Then it’s into the shop to mill Douglas fir staves, cut precise bird’s mouth joints, plane accurate tapers, and glue everything together using West System 105 epoxy and 207 hardener. This hollow spar construction method creates a lightweight, strong wooden mast that’s easier to handle and step than a solid spar. Whether you’re building a small boat mast, boom, or yard, these techniques apply to traditional wooden spars of all kinds. Big thanks to West System Epoxy for supporting this video. https://www.westsystem.com/ 👉 Bird’s Mouth Spar Calculator & Resources https://www.chase-small-craft.com/birdsmouth-sparmaking #Boatbuilding #WoodenMast #SparMaking #BirdsmouthJoint #Woodworking #Epoxy #TraditionalCraft #WestSystem00:00 Intro & Finished Mast Tease 00:41 What Is a Bird’s Mouth Mast? 00:47 Reading the Sail Plan for Mast Dimensions 01:32 Understanding Elliptical Spar Tapers 02:42 Simple Method for Laying Out a Mast Taper 05:44 Calculating and Tapering the Staves 06:28 Keeping One Side of the Mast Flat 07:30 Milling Douglas Fir Staves 08:52 Cutting the Bird’s Mouth Joint 09:25 Planing Stave Tapers by Hand 10:41 Preparing for Glue-Up & End Blocking 11:07 Making Octagonal Blocking for Mast Ends 13:26 Setting Up for the Epoxy Glue-Up 14:47 Keeping the Mast Flat During Assembly 17:14 Wetting Out Joints with Epoxy 19:13 Avoiding Glue Starvation 20:01 Installing Internal Mast Blocking 21:24 Coating the Inside of the Hollow Mast 22:37 Thickened Epoxy in the Bird’s Mouth Joints 24:17 Assembling the Staves in Saddles 26:22 Closing the Final Stave 27:31 Clamping with Hose Clamps 29:48 Laying the Mast Flat to Set Shape 30:45 Using a Laser to Keep the Mast Straight 31:44 Glue-Up Complete 34:18 Knocking Off Corners – Octagon Shaping 35:10 The 7-10-7 Rule (Octagon to 16 Sides) 38:53 Sanding the Mast Round 39:38 Why Hollow Masts Are Worth It 39:56 Final Thoughts & Resources My website: https://www.nomadboatbuilding.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadboatbuilding/ Support these videos with monthly or annual pledges at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/nomadboatbuilding Or make a one time donation: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/nomadboatbuilding

Bikinis, pelicans, sail locker, amplifier, stereo and more.... Karen tries on mix matched bikinis outfits in anticipation of warmer weather coming soon. Steve enjoys viewing the combination of bikini outfits and bare skin. We were lucky enough to see a bird feeding frenzy show brought about by several pelicans. It was wonderful to see so many and so close. A dolphin even managed to slip through their feeding ground. Steve finished the installation of the second amplifier in the salon. The video may not do the sound changes justice. On board you can hear the change in fullness of the tunes being played through the Fusion stereo and Kicker box speakers in the salon. After pulling everything out of the front sail locker, we sand and prepare the area for painting with bilge paint. It’s a little tricky painting the locker floor so we connected a brush to a pole. It worked well and once the bottom was painted and dried, Karen was able to get in the locker and almost finish painting the sides. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.

In this video (Billy) dive deep into every corner of the engine room and also start to modify the sewage system and install an new Raritan Marine Elegance head for Sierra's master head project. I found some interesting things on top of the fuel tanks, review the type II MSD that is already installed onboard, and try to get the engine room a little more tidy for now. After leaving one of the most welcoming villages we’ve ever visited in the southern Natuna Islands, we set sail toward our next destination — the Anambas Islands. Our first stop looked incredible… but getting in wasn’t straightforward. The entrance to the anchorage wound its way through a narrow gap in the reefs, and with our deep-draft boat, that always brings a level of nerves. Slowly and carefully, we picked our way through. But once inside, the reward was immediate. Crystal-clear water, coral visible beneath the boat, dramatic rock formations rising out of the sea, and one of the most beautiful anchorages we’ve seen in a long time. We spent the following days exploring by dinghy, kayak, and sailing dinghy, relaxing on beaches as a family, and soaking in a place we know we’ll never forget. In this episode of our sailboat refit, we tackle the prep work for installing new LED lighting throughout the boat, and like most projects on a refit, it turned into more work than expected. To start, we removed two stainless steel light strips in the salon—each holding eight fixtures—and enlarged every mounting hole to fit the new lights. For this, we tried a new tool: a Vevor punch-out tool, which made quick, clean work of resizing the holes and turned out to be a game changer for this kind of job. From there, we worked our way around the perimeter of the salon, widening additional light cutouts and even removing a hanging cabinet to gain access and properly modify the openings. With the holes prepped, we installed new wire harnesses throughout the interior, setting the stage for a clean and reliable lighting system. The cockpit lights got the same treatment, where we used fish tape to run new wiring through tight spaces. The most challenging part of the entire project was feeding wires for the salon’s perimeter lights—tight, hard-to-reach areas that required patience, a flexible fish tape, and a grabber tool to finally get everything in place. This episode is a real look at the behind-the-scenes work required for upgrading sailboat lighting, including cutting, wiring, and problem-solving in confined spaces. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a critical step toward making the boat feel functional, comfortable, and liveable again. With all wiring run and holes prepped, and new LED lights installed, we’re finally ready to reinstall the ceiling panels and bring the interior back together—and that’s a huge milestone after months of teardown. If you’re into sailboat refits, marine electrical projects, DIY boat upgrades, or LED lighting installs, this episode walks through the process, tools, and lessons learned along the way. ⛵💡 00:00 Intro to project 00:33 Channel intro 00:51 Remove stainless steel sheets 01:19 Vevor punch-out tool 04:23 Enlarge holes in wood supports 06:22 Prep lights for installation 07:59 Build wiring harnesses 09:01 Reinstall stainless steel sheets 12:20 Overhead cabinet holes and wires 15:39 Enlarge holes for perimeter lights 17:09 Fish wires through perimeter and cockpit ceiling 18:30 Install lights 19:49 test lights 21:23 Wrap up 22:02 Like, Subscribe, Emoji, Bye! 22:23 End Card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website.More about Roam here ⛵️https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ 📲 Keep up with us on social FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/sgsailingroam INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/sailing_roam ----------------------------------------------------------- WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. *Episode 308 | Shipyard madness!* After the adrenaline of hauling out an 88ft wooden boat, the reality is setting in. We finally have Yabá in the dry, and the list of "impossible" tasks we’ve carried for two years is now our daily life. This week is pure shipyard madness. We are working on every part of the boat at once, stripping the hull, prepping the masts for the new gaff rig and hunting for the hidden damage that two years at sea left behind. It’s loud, it’s dirty and it’s a race against the clock. ⚓ Subscribe to follow our journey: If you want to see the full haul-out and the technical challenges of maintaining a handmade wooden boat, make sure to hit that subscribe button! → https://bit.ly/3dI3hBn 💙 *Support the adventure:* 🌊 *Join our crew on Patreon* → Exclusive content here: https://www.patreon.com/sailingyaba ☕ *Send us a drink* → via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=JEA5R5RUDJDLY 🧢 *Shop our gear* → Coolest T-shirts and hats here: https://shopsailingyaba.com/ 💌 *Receive letters from the sea* → Sign up (for free) for MP's newsletter: http://sailingyaba.substack.com ✨ *Want to sail with us?* We’d love to share an adventure with you! But this wasn’t always our life. In 2020, we found Yabá abandoned, sinking, and on the verge of being lost forever. We had no experience in boatbuilding, only a wild dream and the determination to make it happen. We worked relentlessly, learning from the best local shipwrights and pouring everything we had into this rebuild. It took four years of sweat, setbacks, and unwavering commitment, but today, Yabá is more than just a boat, she’s our home, our biggest adventure, and the proof that crazy dreams can come true. Boat life isn’t always turquoise water and smooth sailing… sometimes it’s project after project 😅 In this episode, we tackle a long list of upgrades and repairs—finishing our epoxy countertop, varnishing the fridge top and installing a new gasket, making new dinghy cushions, repairing our headsail, cleaning the heat exchanger, and even bringing our water pump in to get fixed. But it’s not all work. We take breaks to enjoy life in Luperón—horseback riding along Playa Grande, swimming at Playa Chiquita, exploring local restaurants, and celebrating Christmas with friends 🎄 And the best surprise? Our buddy boat finally shows up in Luperón, making it all feel a little more like home. This is real cruising life—the balance between hard work and unforgettable moments. #SailingLife #BoatProjects #SailboatLife #CruisingLife #Liveaboard #BoatWork #Luperon #DominicanRepublic #SailingFamily #LifeAtSea #BoatMaintenance #EpoxyCountertop #BoatRepairs #DinghyLife #ChristmasAbroad #TravelFamily #SailingAdventure #LiveaboardLife #WildlyIntrepid ***************************************** SUPPORT OUR VIDEOS ON PATREON https://www.patreon.com/WildlyIntrepid MAKE A ONE TIME CONTRIBUTION https://www.paypal.me/wildlyintrepid WILDLY INTREPID MERCH https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/wildly-intrepid HELP us get what we NEED Amazon Wish List https://www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/2GTH6AGVPH4LP?ref_=wl_share ***************************************** Subscribe to Join our Intrepid Tribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/WildlyIntrepid?sub_confirmation=1 ***************************************** FOR UPDATES https://www.facebook.com/wildlyintrepid/ https://www.instagram.com/wildlyintrepid/ ***************************************** Defender Marine It's a great place to get your marine supplies from plus we get a small kickback when you buy through our affiliate link. defender.pxf.io/xL9D9v Here is a link to purchase SOK batteries and help out the channel at the same time without costing you anything extra. https://www.us.sokbattery.com/?ref=zS7whJNCsEGFPu BougeRV FOR 32% OFF ON all ED series and CRD series fridge and battery CODE: Wildly Or use link:https://bit.ly/3ZYruez UNOWIX batteries use the Promo Code UNOWIX10 for an extra 10% discount. Every builder should appreciate a traditional Kiridashi marking knife. In this video on The Art of Boat Building, I step away from the hull and into the workshop to craft a traditional Kiridashi marking knife. Starting with raw steel, I walk through the full process of shaping, grinding, heat treating, and sharpening this deceptively simple but incredibly precise tool. The kiridashi has long been valued for its clean, accurate lines perfect for joinery, layout work, and the kind of detail that defines true craftsmanship. This build isn’t just about making a knife it’s about honoring the tools that make fine work possible. Whether you’re building boats, furniture, or anything in between, the right marking tool can elevate your accuracy and your results. If you enjoy craftsmanship, hand tools, and the process behind the build, you’re in the right place. “If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.” Bob Emser As an advocate for backyard boat builders I offer a free 30 minute chat about your project. #156 Roadtrip Australia.
